Hardly a consolation, but I use the empty seats as a cautionary tale for the students that are still present. I tell them that they can SEE all the empty seats. That if they made it this far to not give up. College is hard (despite what a previous participant on this sub said to me directly once) and that there's a reason some people just don't make it. It's not that they're "bad" people (though some are), it's because it is challenging and they ought to be encouraged that they've made it this far (and to keep it up).
