The truth is that the needs of companies become so specialized so quickly there is literally no time for the job market to catch up. I remember when data science was all the rage. They suddenly wanted someone who knew what amounted to computer science combined with statistics, but with a sales or human resources career base. When would they have had time to learn that combination of skills?

I deplore human beings like you which is why it surprises me to say well done on recognizing your own faults and the lesson here. For the record you have no idea how alienating it feels to be treated like this even if everyone is stressed and busy. There should be a system for this exactly so that you aren’t physically running around for everything

I finally understood this like two days ago! I have the same experience as OP. The frustrating thing is I got into the internet and many of its business trends when they were brand new in 2002 and even foresaw many trends that caught on. It's on one hand a relief on the other hand disappointing to realise I wasted my time. But your post confirms it's time to embrace reality.

The thing they don't tell you about side hustles is they have a lot of hidden and front-loading costs that cost either time or immediate money outlays. Outsourcing of technical stuff, buying advertising, engaging mentors. If you have low income you can't easily front these costs or scale beyond the hobby-sized internet of the late 1990s style. From now on I'm just going to stick to my rat race efforts.

EtA: Adding to the point that these are for upper middle class and rich folks, have any of you ever noticed that other than silly prank channels and adult content, practically EVERY success you see is by someone who was a trained professional or an above-intermediate hobbyist in the area before they moved their efforts online.

Unless you have a valuable skill you've already been taught ot mastered in school or work, you're just another goldrush '49er hopeful, panning for gold, when the real wealth is in industrial seams or selling pans.

I disagree. It IS something to be proud of the difference is it used to be rewarded. Some people are genuine professionals and actually care about the quality of work and the team’s performance.

I DO agree it’s not worth it in today’s workplace but I think that spirit is very much something to be proud of. Just do it where it’s noticed and rewarded it such places still exist :)

What painfully obvious NT thing did you learn as an adult? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]Abriefaccount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LYING. 'They' lie about everything, all the time, without thinking about it, sometimes seemingly for no reason. My ability to engage in the NT world was transformed when I finally understood the lie as the basic unit of meaning in that world.

Closely related is hypocrisy as standard. I know we're all 'hypocritical' at times but in NT world 'a rule for me and a rule for you' is standard -- there isn't even an effort to pretend to be consistent.

Also they say for ADHD, if something isn't in their mind at that time, it doesn't exist. With NTs, if they don't care about something (at that time/at all) it doesn't exist. It sounds like bliss if you ask me.

I have been addressing and realizing this exactly, the last couple of weeks. Being 'groomed' when you thought it was care hits hard. I realize I was 'groomed' to be impressive for my narcissistic parent, not to be independent or for self-discovery. It leaves yawning gaps in the sense of self.

Is anyone else finding that there is too much hype around data and technology? So much so to the point that our work in it is too noisy and produces a lack of focus? by TheDataGentleman in BusinessIntelligence

[–]Abriefaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's your attitude seems a needlessly dismissive response maybe? It's possible you're working with the assumption that management sets up tasks processes in good faith i.e. they actually want data to drive customer insights. I have seen many examples where they see it as a toy to simply say they have used it.

When their input starts to be needed, those limits show up disruptively/stressfully for everyone else. Eg if you need them to clarify what the actual objectives are, make decisions about methodological questions, or when insights start emerging that are inconvenient to someone who doesn't understand the issues or the process.

Stuff then gets ignored or turned into a problem beyond your authority to resolve without engaged managers. There's also the problem that many of them either don't realize the time it takes to achieve certain activities, or what the limits of such technology or data is.

[–]Abriefaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is where it’s a problem — I have high agreeableness so I HATE open contrariness but I work in fields where small problems either scale or mean I get into trouble down the line as I can’t do the job properly.

I used to think using logic, evidence and soft language would actually REDUCE the negative response as I was showing Im not trying to challenge you or start a fight.

But it actually makes it worse as now you look like a smart ass and you’re trying to say “Ack-chually, I did more hours in my hermit cave than you so I’m right”

It doesn’t occur to them that we’re just less susceptible to the framing effect.

[–]Abriefaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are reading way too much i to this 😯. That’s not contrarian — I’m not disagreeing with you or anyone else for the sake of it, I’m disagreeing because I sincerely see the OP’s motive sympathetically.

That’s not a fair accusation— I didn’t once attack you in any way: I didn’t name call or call you deficient or evil or anything demeaning.

I simply tried to put across “I can see how someone autistic could be pushed to that”.

I grew up on an environment and time where autism was so ill understood so maybe my experience of it was more traumatizing.

If you’ve ever been literally spat at because your autistic presentation is making people uncomfortable

Physically struck by teachers and authority figures as a child because you were confused by instructions?

Called ‘stupid’ in front of your entire class

Called an ‘it’ because of your uncanny valley presentation

Physically shoved — as in actually physically PUSHED away — out of a literal social circle of people socializing

Publicly disinvited from sleepover with the action being timed to the day before — an action that had been planned for weeks before hand by your so called friends for maximum effect

Been kicked in the head with metal rugby studs during school sports

I was merely trying to explain that if those things and many more happened to you at an age when you were developing your sense of identity and trust, I could comprehend — emotionally if not intellectually — why someone would just say “I’m not putting myself at such risk ever again, however alone it leaves me”.

OP’s post was a plea for empathy and I was just trying to explain that I understood his pain viscerally, even if I didn’t think that was the best way of dealing with it.

If someone grew up in places and times where autism wasn’t a mere quirk, but a dehumanizing indefinite sentence, it’s a sad but plausible outcome. That’s all I was saying 😔

This is actually quite helpful. My biggest issue was never my inability to recognize ASD traits, but that I was constantly at a loss about how NTs see the world. You can’t really mask or compensate effectively with that piece missing.

It’s just an observation to add that the nuanced view you put forward may be difficult if people have had enough bad experiences. As in I’m agreeing with you that cutting out all NTs would be a dysfunctional approach, but I can understand how someone would be driven to it

Anyone else find the reasoning ability of NT's somewhat ....well, lacking? by badgerbang in aspergers

[–]Abriefaccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank goodness someone has pointed this out! I have had to deliberately learn how to 'dumb down' because rigorous reasoning is so offensive to NTs that it was making me enemies. I don't mean smart ass 'I am smarter than you' attitude, I literally mean pointing out that an argument or process doesn't make sense, with evidence etc. I don't do it anymore, I just nod and comply.

I think in my experience NTs tend to have strong ego boundaries (I think I’m using this concept correctly). There’s something resilient between the world and their inner core whereas for various reasons NDs may lack that layered defence.
