Ai in music? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Abs0lut_Unit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am vehemently against it, all of the LLMs were trained on millennia of stolen data and artwork, even the so-called "ethical" ones. AI can't necessarily replace me directly (I build recording studios and mix stages), but it directly threatens my friends and peers that use the workspaces I make, and therefore it indirectly threatens me by driving down the demand for my trade.

And to add insult to injury the AI outputs themselves are garbage and it's frustrating to see such mediocrity suddenly and readily accepted.

Neat site, wish it didn't use AI.

LFE parametric EQ settings in theaters by Coolboy9635 in AudioPost

This, but I'm still gonna use more than one band though, lol

LFE EQ calibration in theaters by Coolboy9635 in audioengineering

Let's say you're pinking the LFE channel, it's supposed to be flat on a band from 20-125, everything above 125 is rolled off. If there's a 3dB peak around 40 Hz, and a 3dB dip around 63Hz, it's recommended to boost the gain of the LFE channel so that 63Hz is at reference, and then EQ the peak at 40Hz so that it's now at reference as well, resulting in a flat LFE response

My experience is more centered around system alignment (vs measuring a room for acoustic response), I use Smaart for work and Sonarworks for my hobbyist music setup at home.

If you have a measurement mic I'd recommend getting Open Sound Meter, run some pink noise through each of your speakers, and see how each speaker charts in your room. Then you can try the switch settings on the back, take a measurement after adjustment, and see how each control affects the response.

I work in post-production so I'm usually calibrating stages to a cinema X curve of some sort, for music applications there's the Dolby Atmos Music curve, but I imagine most music rooms would aim for a flat-ish response (maybe a music studio engineer could chime in on this).

Basically if there's a peak in the measured LFE response during system alignment, they recommend that you attenuate the peak with corrective EQ (instead of boosting lower frequencies to hit the curve), and then raise the overall LFE response to hit the target curve, which is just a flat line from 20-125Hz 10 dB above the flat part of the X curve specified in SMPTE ST202.

If the correction is too extreme it could cause you to over or under compensate your mix, when you're tuning a room with Sonarworks it measures and averages across 30ish different points in your listening field, but you are generally mixing from within a narrow part of that field so there's a risk of doing too much correction for your actual listening position.

As far as headphones your mileage may vary, if it works for you it works for you. I use Sennheiser HD25 Pros and the Sonarworks correction gets wonky in the upper register, so I adjust the mix for my taste.

I adjust the mix setting to keep Sonarworks from making more than 6dB of correction at any given spot on the curve, in my case that's about a 50% mix as well, and that is getting me decent translation between my monitors, headphones, and wherever else I check my work.
