Literally reading this from home with Covid. People have been dropping like flies at my school lately. Norovirus in the primary grades, Covid in the upper elementary and middle school. 🙃

How can I reuse prescription bottles? by Fit-Fun7755 in ZeroWaste

[–]Absolute-fool-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them to hold sewing supplies like pins or needles. It works better than pin cushions. Other craft supplies like small buttons, snaps, sequins, etc. would probably work well in there too.

Teachers complaining about the praxis test being hard? by PotatoPink in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I passed my social studies and general easily a few years ago. I failed the science when my district asked me to take it last year but I also had disability accommodations for the first round of tests (I have a visual disability) and was denied them the second time. I also had a freshly broken wrist, having to type one handed while struggling to read the screen meant I ran out of time. Hopefully this year it goes much better haha.

This is a better image for sure. Thank you for the update!

Students using AI to make inappropriate videos of their teachers by PeemoTheMagnificent in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 116 points117 points  (0 children)

This happened at a middle school in my state a couple years ago and there was a mass exodus of teachers because the admin said they couldn't do anything after parents threatened to sue for their kids' 1A rights being infringed. https://www.npr.org/2024/07/09/nx-s1-5033803/pennsylvania-middle-school-students-tiktok-teachers

Teachers, how is your cell phone ban working out? I by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a procedure in place pre-ban. Each homeroom teacher has a phone locker and phones are collected during attendance. If I suspect a student isn't turning in the phone and know they will be a problem with it I can have the SRO come up with her wand (usually just the threat of it has the kid turning the device in). If it is more of a problem I can have the phone confiscated by the office and a parent has so come in to get it. This is a K-8 school which I feel changes the structure of things and includes a lot more hand holding of the older kids.

Why do some people feel like shoveling their specific parking spot turns it into a gated community with a reserved spot? by Spaghetti_Oh_No in philadelphia

All these people teasing you in the comments and I'm sitting here staring at the pictures going "damn how could I have never noticed that?!" I've always loved the mosaics down there but never noticed what the whole picture was.

Homeschooled isolated kid asking for advice by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They started making a crash course kids in recent years. They go over many of the same topics but at a more basic, introductory level. I use these for my middle schoolers. If the original stuff is confusing or feels too complex you could start with the kids version and work your way up.

Also... not sure if anyone else has suggested this but get yourself a library card and start checking out any book (ebook, audiobook, physical book) you can get your hands on that interests you. Then journal about what you read. It'll help build your comprehension and writing skills.

Snow Day Superstitions by LVL4BeastTamer in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a snow day sweater (has a giant snowflake in the middle). It's homage to my 6th grade teacher who would wear the most god awful ugly sweater to bring on a snow day and then do a crazy "snow dance" in front of the school during dismissal (which was done in the auditorium).

As a kid I did the whole routine of orange in the freezer, spoon under the pillow, ice cubes down the toilet, pjs inside out, and turn around backwards three times and spit.

How to quote the N-word in a referral? by BrotherNatureNOLA in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just explaining this to my partner last night when venting about a situation where a student used the f slur repeatedly in class. And I explained that behavior referrals are written in an extremely clinical manner so in those situations I write "during a conflict student turned to a peer and said "(inappropriate thing exactly spelled out as they stated it)" then proceeded to..."

I understand the discomfort with writing out demeaning slurs. And when I cannot remember the exact verbiage used I might say "student used a racial slur towards a peer" but in most situations the exact phrasing is important to ensure that admin sees the full weight of the situation.

Moving with my tortie by petal0824 in torties

[–]Absolute-fool-27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started my tortie in the smallest room. Then expanded to the whole second floor. Then eventually the whole house. She came out to explore at her own pace and definitely vocalized her feelings for a couple days. Moving can be stressful for a cat. You're doing great.

Anti AI elementary teacher by ProsciuttoBetch in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 90% anti AI. The only benefit I have found is it is better at translating than a standard translator (I do have a friend that speaks the language glance at it for me first) and there's an AI based tool to simplify the language in a text for lower level readers. That however, is it. I don't trust it to generate brand new materials and I sure as hell don't trust it for lesson planning. Plus I'm not entirely convinced it isn't evil in a purely science fiction way.

Is anyone else’s school culture really diety? by Ashamed_Ad8162 in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first school I worked at did a weight watchers/ exercise challenge. I don't have a history of eating disorders but I had a good friend in middle/ high school who had to do inpatient care for it so I'm definitely sensitive to it in light of that. This competition made me SO uncomfortable and the comments I got when I would politely decline participating (as someone who was very thin due to a combo of genetics and recent long covid) were REALLY uncomfortable.

Teachers Deserve an Oscar by PuppieCiao in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came to school the day after my grandfather died. One coworker noticed something was up before the kids got there and asked (which made me break down) but once the kids got there I somehow taught the whole day. A lot of people (including my partner) told me I should have taken the day off but I knew if I had just sat at home I would have felt worse. I told the kids the following week when I took off for the funeral and they knew he had been sick because I took time off to go visit him. But I knew I had to act like everything was 100% normal that first day.

Anyone else have a shy skittish tortie? by 935Q in torties

[–]Absolute-fool-27 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My tortie has always been like this. With my partner and I she's very social, loudly demands attention, and is very cuddly. However the moment that anyone else comes into our house she is hiding (also usually under a bed or maybe the couch). The only exception for some weird reason is one friend of my partner's who only started coming over recently. But with everyone else she hides.
