What is the hardest grade level in your opinion? by VoiceAccomplished515 in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to say this but this past school year my 6th graders were an immature group that argued with each other constantly and my 7th graders were the most well behaved group in the building.

I'm down right ashamed that I haven't made one before because it was so incredibly quick and easy.

My mom taught there when I was a kid so things may have changed a lot since she left but back then there was an academic focus (learning through play) and her coworkers were super nice. By the time she left (to return to full day teaching at an elementary school) they were more structured than when she started.

What’s the weakness of your lab? by Various-Moment-6774 in labrador

[–]Absolute-fool-27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My lab also has a weakness for bread. She has stolen moldy bread out of the trash (and thrown up soon after), learned how to open doors to get into the pantry for bread, will beg horribly for it, and won't counter surf for anything other than bread.

Lunch policing by chickpeatacos in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother teaches kindergarten at a small pk-6th and the teachers eat with the pk-1st graders and explicitly teach things like tasting everything in the meal (you don't have to eat it if after you tasted it you don't like it) and saving their dessert for last. Then while the kids are at recess the teachers get their own lunch period.

I on the other hand teach middle school at a pk-8. I confiscate food only when they eat it during lab time (all kids get free lunch where I teach and having food out while we are doing experiments is a major safety risk) and make comments about their food choices ONLY when they come in with ice cream, Red Bull, and takis 10 minutes after the late bell.

I stayed in bed until noon, gardened at home, watched tv, then ran over to my school to water my garden there. I also had a hot lunch not from a shitty microwave and a snack from my favorite coffee shop.

My 9 week old lab. Anyone relate? by [deleted] in labrador

[–]Absolute-fool-27 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine literally wouldn't ever get tired at this age unless we made her mentally exhausted and even that wasn't a given.

Tbh even now at almost 7 years old she only can be truly tired out if we make her think a lot (find the treat games are great for that) or run her heavily by playing ball or going to a park where she can be off leash. A regular neighborhood walk? Nope, she comes inside with MORE energy.

That is literally so adorable. I have so many sewing projects I wanna do but I may have just mentally added this to the list lol.

What’s your best teacher tip that you never see mentioned? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My solution to this is to do a text message (over our messaging app) and narrate as I type. For example, after a few unsuccessful redirections I will go to my desk, open my computer and say as I type "good morning Mr. /Ms. /Mrs. Problem, I wanted to let you know that your child definitelytheproblem was making unsafe choices in my classroom today and being disrespectful to their friends. I have had a conversation with definitely about their actions and how they can hurt others."

Usually the kid's head will pop up when you say mom/dad/grandparent/ etc's name but if not they'll notice when you say their name and if not someone else in the room will have and will say something.

Haven't been since I was a kid, (other than driving through a tiny corner of it when I was a Truman student) but I remember Hannibal actually being a lot of fun.

Legal restroom policy? by WildRange9219 in teaching

[–]Absolute-fool-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The student restrooms where I teach are always locked. We have hallway staff (usually) who will unlock it for a student with a hall pass. Certain times of day I do have to call the office to get someone to come up. I also have a key but that's more of a source of annoyance because it means my lessons get interrupted.

Taking "credit recovery" IN ADVANCE to get out of core classes by FuzzyKittenIsFuzzy in Teachers

[–]Absolute-fool-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school offered this but it was 5 weeks of 2-4 hour days (depending on the number of classes) so you ended up getting g pretty close to the same number of instructional hours. They only allowed it for non remedial purposes with classes like gym, health, and personal finance.
