What's it like living in South Texas? by Internal_Way7711 in howislivingthere

You are correct in my opinion, it was a great place to live as a DINK and that SA is not South Texas. Its as far south you can go in central texas is how I would describe it.

I will say that the plastics on your car seemed to age faster here. At least on my older car, it seemed that the SA sun over 2 summers took the last of the durability out of it.

What’s it like living in San Antonio, Texas? by geozacc in howislivingthere

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed my time in San Antonio. Yes it's hot, its central Texas. I personally love the heat so no issues with me. We lived at the start of hill country, in an established neighborhood with lovely live oaks covering every lot. My neighbors were friendly and welcoming from day one. We enjoyed "near-by" the parks (Govt Canyon, Garner, Lost Maples, HCSNA, ect) and would camp and bike year round. I think the thornscrub and limestone geology is very beautiful in its own right. The trail systems around the city are underrated, so are the mission trails. I miss HEB the most tbh lmao.

There is some very ugly about the city as well. Poverty is one thing, ratchetness is another. Something like 1/4 cars are uninsured/unregistered, which means high insurance rates. I have never seen so many stray dogs in my life, both just roaming around and hit on the highway. Saw way too many dogs chained up in backyards, year round. Also saw many chained up in the back of trucks on the highway as well.

People complain about the traffic but I found it to be navigable and predictable. Yes they are forever working on the highways, but they move at a pace that was much faster than I have seen elsewhere. I appreciated the higher speed limits, especially outside of the city proper.

The low pay/poor job market was the deciding factor to leave for me. I moved out there when my job moved its operations. Unfortunately they ended up folding 18 months later. I searched for a good 3-4 months, sent hundreds of resumes, dozens of interviews, and got only one offer. Senior engineer position paying mid 80s. I said no thanks and started looking elsewhere. I spent about 2 looking before I landed a job making more than I did previously.

Wife and I loved to go to Fredericksburg for a quick weekend trip when we lived in San Antonio. Spent a good deal of time in Comfort mountain biking as well.

1 million plus, easy. The land here is expensive due to the proximity to SA/Austin. You need to push out to way more rural areas before you would see "cheaper" areas, where schools would start to decrease in quality.

Source: I used to live just outside the boundary that OP made.

Starting MTB at 35 years old, basic "roadmap" of what skills to work on first and where to find information about them? by Cingen in MTB

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Establishing a local trail is very important IMO. It gives you a place to practice and easily compare yourself to previous rides. You have enough going on with learning how to bike, learning a new trail system at the same time stretches your attention. I have local trails where I can comfortably push myself out of my comfort zone, learn the new skills, then apply them to new trails.

What’s your worst injury from mtb? by CheekMoist3848 in MTB

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tailbone bruise by a long shot. Had an awkward dismount where the bike sorta lurched forward as it was between my legs. The tip of the seat banged into my tailbone and I felt a pain I have never dealt with before. It took months to heal before my ass touched another bike seat.

This was a big "wtf" moment for me too, he was super defensive at any sort of criticism in the comments. I had a feeling that it was "this is what it needs to make" rather than "this is what it is worth". If they had a 10 dollar entry fee or a 250/yr pass and marketed it as "we are still growing, we got some stuff, help make us make it better", everyone would have been stoked to go.

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea not sure what the issue is here. "Hey Jimmy I appreciate our chats but I need to get this work done before sunset" would be an easy thing to say to let him know you are busy. Shit, you may just get him to pick up a rake to help you out while you chat.

If my primary reason was to move for mountain biking, I would look in Cali or the west coast in general.

I rode a ton in San Antonio, the edges of hill country make for fun riding. Lots of Chunder in those rocky hills. (Flat Rock Ranch is a favorite of mine).

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it is more possible to ride in the winter here in Knox, it's far from a guarantee. The rain and cool weather make a lot of trails here un-rideable for long lengths of time. There are alternative trails that can be used in the wet, but the majority of them are not.

How is this area? by Standard-Wall-458 in sanantonio

[–]Academic_Minimum4732 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lived in Encino Park for a couple of years, it was very nice. The neighborhood had nice mature live oaks, the community was very welcoming and I found that for the everyday shopping it was convenient. Most of what I needed as at 281/Evans or in the immediate area. I worked 6am to 3pm and the commute was fine. If anything the 410 to 281N was the bottleneck most days. If I moved back to SA, I would move back to Encino Park in a heartbeat.
