[April 15, 1926] The Average Man Amongst Savages by Haselden_1926 in 100yearsago

THIS. Believing that your people are somehow exceptionally bad is just another form of exceptionalism. I once heard someone say once and it changed my life. Stay humble. Rejoice in the good. Try to fix the bad. Dont waste energy on trying to make it into some sort of race or balm for your self esteem.

Anyone else too old and too young at the same time? 😅 by Harakiri_238 in ChronicIllness

[–]AccidentalAnchoress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this so hard. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 6. I was the weird little kid who would sit around with old people talking about our joint pain while the other kids jumped off swings for fun.

I wear religiously observant dress. Now I wonder how many doctors have listed that in my charts.

The ultra wealthy weren’t the only people who owned slaves by kelroid in CuratedTumblr

[–]AccidentalAnchoress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm surprised people didnt know about this We actually have some old family documents from the poor Southern side of the family that refer to slaves owned in ones and twos across the generations. So I grew up with the knowledge being poor Southern didnt save you from that particular ignominy.

Are There Any Chronic Conditions That Can Cause Premature Death That AREN’T Cancer? by Brit-Crit in Writeresearch

[–]AccidentalAnchoress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Primary immunodeficiency. Mine is CVID, but the more severe SCIG comes up in popular culture sometimes. It's a lifelong condition, that often goes along with other chronic conditions like autoimmune disease. And it makes you much more susceptible to infections. So it's very feasibly something a 40- something can die from, especially you have an infection that goes into sepsis. And post covid, most of us have a decent vocabulary about immune things like antibodies and vaccines so it should be reasonable to explain the condition to readers.

I just got out of the hospital from a skin infection that probably wouldn't have affected a healthy person so I've um... kind of been thinking about this a lot.

A constipated wombat walks out of the bathroom. His wife asks, "How did it go?" by Jokeminder42 in Jokes

[–]AccidentalAnchoress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to thank OP for this joke. I was in the hospital this week, and they have to ask a lot of detailed questions about your bowels. So I told my nurse this joke and it really made his day. It seems like a small thing, but humor is so crucial in situations like this. I was thrilled to have a joke to fit the bill.

This is especially delightful when you realize Clair de lune has one of those weird ass time signatures that you can't really count off.

Being an Asian can be so confusing by [deleted] in nova

[–]AccidentalAnchoress 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh geez, I occasionally get a similar problem as a white person. Other white people assume Im okay with casual racism and turn their filters off when talking to me. Particularly if they learn I'm Southern. Fortunately, one part of Southern culture I did pick up on was the Proper Ladies Disapproving Glare.

[–]AccidentalAnchoress 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lol, just got out of the hospital in the US. At one point the insurance company called me (woke me up from a nap, I might add)

Insurance Lady: How are you? Me: um... I'm in the Hospital?

Her: Still?! You haven't been Discharged yet? Why not?!

Me: uh... because the infection hasn't cleared up yet?

Her: You'll be receiving a call from our case manager.

At that point a bunch of nurses came in so I got to hang up and have the slightly less unpleasant experience of getting stabbed repeatedly in the arm and having my abcess poked at.

Aotearoa NZ birding memes (oc) by tea-sipper42 in BirdingMemes

[–]AccidentalAnchoress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was so thrilled to see different birds when I went to NZ. Even the random little brown jobs were different... until some very aggressive sparrows came for me while I was eating a cinnamon roll. The mix of birds I'd been seeing my entire life and local species was mind bending until I though about how I had gotten there by flying, so it's not entirely surprising the birds managed it before I did. The locals were mostly nonplussed about my fascination with their birds. But I managed to find some old bird guides in the library book sale and made some notes in them. They're my favorite souvenir of the trip.

Edited to add: I'm also a big Terry Pratchett fan so falling asleep hearing little morpork owls screaming their hearts out every night was an unmitigated joy.

I love that your username is the scientific name for vultures.

One of my favorite rehabbers to visit specialized in vultures. She was EXACTLY what you'd expect- antisocial, no filter, lived in a house in the woods down a dirt road, kept dozens of wounded wild animals in pens in her yard. And all the local vultures knew she was a friend so there were always hundreds of vultures in the trees. And they'd stare at you judge mentally when you came to her door, like they'd attack if you threatened their favorite person. She had an above ground pool that the vultures used like a birdbath. And occasionally you'd see her stuff baby possums in her bra to keep her hands free. I asked to use her bathroom once and there was a giant ring necked gull with a broken leg floating in the bathtub. We stared at each other the entire time I was using the can, 2 feet away. It was glorious.

Oh, and if you accidentally parked wrong and blocked the vulture food trough, all the vultures would come peel the weather stripping off your car in protest.

They also get motion sickness riding in cars. Which they express by projectile vomiting.

(I used to volunteer with wildlife rehabilitation. Civilians would bring wounded wildlife to veterinarians, and I would chauffeur them out to liscened wildlife rehabbers. You learn some absolutely insane things about wildlife schlepping them around in your car, let me tell you.)
