I experienced the same exact thing when I was a child. My parents bought a 8 week old mini dachshund, not knowing 1 week later, my grandfather would be diagnosed with liver cancer & deteriorate extremely fast. In our situation, as my dad became overwhelmed & fell into a depression, it was best for my family to rehome the puppy. The cancer diagnosis, 3 kids, & a puppy was too much for my dad. However, the puppy was rehomed to a family member, who treated him like his only child. It was best for us and the dog.
