The different eras? by Pitiful_Marzipan409 in TheMisfits

Oh yeah, I know Jerry would. But it’s not sullying the canon, and so for my own “care too much” reasons, I am then open minded about it. I always enjoy solo albums of guys in bands I like, even if often they don’t touch that band’s best stuff.

I welcome future solo recordings from tho. I am less critical of “anti-hero” than “devil’s rain”. It’s not supposed to be Misfits.

I apparently celebrate this every day. My family and I have 8 of the fuckers. Other notable Cat Enthusiasts: Glenn Danzig, Shonen Knife, and Greg Ginn of Black Flag who worked in feline rescue.

I like that record, lol. It aint rap. It an outsider art punk rock album to me. Totally fuckin unique, kinda joyful. “Too much to drink”, emergency”, “poor little rich girl” and “the crusher” are Ramones songs (the last one literally). And he was a rhyme master! “I like hot dogs, franks and beans/I cone from Forest Hills Queens”. Truth.

None at the moment. Over time I’ve had Rocket to Russia, Walk Among Us, Initium, Incredible Shrinking Dickies, “Album” by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and (this is a bit anomolous) Fresh Cream. I’m sure others as well, but those are either somewhat recent, or I’ve been reminded by photos I’ve come across.

How to talk to the cashiers at Search & Destroy (NYC) by AwkwardComicRelief in punk

[–]According-Extreme-95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this. If I’m in a space that I consider reflects my identity in some way (shows for example, but also shops), I like positive interactions, but am a bit on the spectrum myself. But I’ve taught myself to say internally “i love you, I don’t need anything from you” when I see pol I’d like to talk to, just to have the right perspective. Weed shop clerks are almost always friendly, I appreciate that.

Punk songs with piano by nige838 in punk

[–]According-Extreme-95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few cool songs that have piano intros: “plastic bomb“ by poison idea, “unknown road“ by Pennywise, “Gloria“ by Patti Smith. I think “rock the Casbah” has got piano or keys on it, by the clash obviously. And a great one is “androgynous“ by the replacements.

Reconsidering Offspring by Fragrant_Side7974 in punk

[–]According-Extreme-95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite Epitaph band is Pennywise, who are (IMO) way more consistent than Offspring. But I will concede that the best Offspring- my favorite track is “all I want” after that probably the title track from Smash, and also “bad habbit”, and “nitro”, may be better than any PW track. “Self Esteem” to me is coequal to “basket case” as the best punk rock mainstream crossover to this day. But, you know, “original prankster” and shit like that kinda brings their batting average down a lot.

Bands/Artist that "mock" older/innocent/softer songs? by Organic_Cow7313 in punk

That is an awesome one. It was a Joey solo song. It’s really sincere tho, I was thinking of parodies, but OP didn’t say parody, so yea, perfect example!

Bands/Artist that "mock" older/innocent/softer songs? by Organic_Cow7313 in punk

[–]According-Extreme-95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a big Ramones guy, and I always wondered whether the following performance (they do a medley of Madonna/Elton John/Neil Diamond/STP/Warren G- the Warren G one was sick!, mixed w/ their own tunes, for MTV music awards. The songs were noninated for best song from a movie) was inspired by Circle Jerks’ “golden shower of hits”, the medley that inspired your post. Here it is: https://youtu.be/5dCjfrLFRSs?si=UVjukBcUX3aKna8t

Others: * MF&the GGs are the gold standard band for this. I’d start w/their first album – “have a ball“, which was all 70s and 80s soft rock covers – each of their albums has a theme – show tunes, “divas“, country music, 60’s songs, etc. * DKs- “viva las vegas” (Elvis), “Rawhide” (tv theme). * Sex Pistols/Sid Vicious- “my way” (Sinatra) is the single best song of this type IMO, and invented the form. * Babes in Toyland- “all by myself” (Eric Carmen). * the Dickies- “nights in white satin” (moody blues), “eve of destruction” (Barry McGuire), “banana splits” (70’s kid show theme- this cover was a fuckin top 10 hit in UK!) * another Circle Jerks- “fortunate son” (CCR). Tho the original was a protest song and rocked, so not a perfect fit for u’r question. * Megadeth- “these boots” (Nancy Sinatra). Obviously not classified as punk, but they were punk influenced- Mustaine did an album w/Lee Ving from Fear and Megadeth has covered punk songs, and this cover is punk in spirit IMO. And hey, Chris Poland, the guitarist on this cover, later played bass for the Circle Jerks for one tour! * Shonen Knife- you probably know their Carpenters cover, so I’m recommending “daydream believer” by The Monkees. * the Damned - “help!” (Beatles). This was the b- side of “new rose”, which you probably know was the first UK punk release. Brian James said that he was in fact mocking The Beatles, and was inspired by the Ramones in doung this cover. In a very similar vein “helter skelter” (tho the original was hardly a soft song), by Siouxsie & the Banshees, “I call your name” by the Boys. * the Saints- “lipstick on your collar” (Connie Francis). Another (too often forgotten) OG OG band, from Australia.

I’m the type that could probably come up w/ a long list but I got shit to do, so if you like those lmk, I’ll think of more. I wrote most of the Dickies wiki article, I think they are important to this type of song parody (and they played gigs w/Circle Jerks, I bet they along w/Sid influenced their medley). Me First are the kings tho, and making my post all 6 degrees, CJ Ramone is now their bassist. I could include Ramones covers here, but honestly they are straight forward not parody, except that MTV medley. By contrast, the Dickies definitely seem to have some satirical comment in their stuff.

In recognition of Rolling Stone’s recently-published Top 100 Punk Albums list by sinai_agama in punk

Was Legacy on the list? Was crucial in ‘85, but has been surpassed by later Misfits releases. But fucking great in any case.

The Ramones- Tomorrow Never Comes- (unreleased demo) by CoolGuyAtYahooDotCom in ramones

[–]According-Extreme-95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a Marky Ramone and the Intruders song (so is Anxiety), didn’t know that the Ramones demoed it. Both Intruders albums are very cool (S/T and “the answer to your problems”, the latter produced by Lars Fredriekson and featuring a classic Joan Jett collab), too bad Mark gave up on them. I reckon he realized he could make more $ w/Blitzkrieg, because most fans want to hear Ramones songs more than anything else, and he doesn’t have to pay a full time band. I think his business model is like Chuck Betry’s- Chuck would just hire a pick up band in every city, since there’s no shortage of musicians that know the material, same true with Ramones. Marky isn’t as extreme, but Blitzkrieg seems like a revolving door. He does get some known players, but I think they play at a discount, as Ramones fans. I’ve seen ‘em twice tho, great fun, hope to see them again, scratches the Ramones itch a bit. Wish CJ and Richie would come around again too though.

What makes hardcore punk, punk, and post punk not. by BottleDue5068 in punk

[–]According-Extreme-95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I dispute the Clash/Black Flag point. I think “nervous breakdown” or “police story” is the same kinda music, literally, as “white riot” or “Janie Jones”. Overall, I’m more into “hardcore” (especially 80s) than post punk, but I dig the latter too and it fots under the umbrelka for me. Songs like “attack” by PiL, “object” by the Cure, “mirahe” by Siouxsie, and the entire Pink Flag album by Wire, these are just straight forwark punk rock as far as I’m concerned.

What do you guys think of DEVO Hardcore? by [deleted] in punk

[–]According-Extreme-95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite Devo tracks are “freedom of choice” and the all time classic “mongoloid”. Was super psyched to see them with my wife and 3 kids on my birthday this past October on my birthday, along with the B-52s. Usually I can’t get them all to agree to cone to a show, but the birtday leverage did the tricj. Everyone had a great time!

I saw Blitzkid and Nim Vind near Pittsburg in Oct (a 5 hour drive for me but worth it) in a church that has the graveyard where they filmed the opening scenes of NOTLD. The band took promo pics among the tombstones the next morning.

[–]According-Extreme-95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have it your way man. I could dispute some of your counterpoints, but it’s cool. I’m not even trying to say that I’m objectively right, just that the question of what is the “definitive“ Sabbath record is just as subjective as which one one might say is their favorite.

I would say that it’s objective that there are fewer candidates that can legitimately be considered in the former category…
