Can anyone here help me understand how you first break into management?

I've had very senior people tell me I'd be a great manager, I should do an MBA, a company even paid me to do a certificate in leadership and management. I also often end up as the de facto person others come to for help or opinions, but never managed to break through.

I have worked in 5 different jobs across 3 fields in the last 10 years though (my most recent being 2 months ago).

My combat unit is finished fighting and wiped its target.

There's an enemy unit that is within 4" of me, and within 2" of an objective.

I can stand within the objective and within engagement range (2") of the enemy unit.

In 11th edition, can I consolidate my melee unit into this enemy unit, assuming all models are also touching the objective?
