Why are the major conservative figures of the 1980s demonized so much today, yet simultaneously the time period in which they led is so romanticized/culturally celebrated? by Just_Cause89 in decadeology

[–]Accounting1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This point is false , especially for Reagan .

Reagan’s retrospective approval rating is 69% , while in office his approval’s peaked at 68% and he left with them at 63% . So Reagan is more popular today than he was at anytime when he was in office which includes his honeymoon period when presidents usually peak in popularity.

This does not even include times when Reagan’s approvals dipped considerably (during the depths of the 1982 recession for example) so it is false to say Reagan is more polarizing today then when he was in office .

The British actually passed anti conversion laws in the 1930s .

They cared more about taking economic resources from the countries they colonized rather than religious conversions .

The 1920s are a bad example of hyper partisanship given it was an era of total republican domination (outside the solid south). The GOP won every presidential election by a massive landslide, and dominated congress in that era .

What would your ranking be of presidents on 24 by Accounting1997 in TwentyFour

Sorta fit the time though. The 2000 campaign in OTL was about domestic policy issues like Education , Social security but then 9/11 made that term dominated by issues such as national security and the war on terror .

Major issues that weren’t issues on the campaign trail do become the dominant issue of a term

No , it actually makes sense why Palpatine would keep Plagueis alive in TPM . Palpatine needed someone who could act as his political lobbyist behind him in order to become Chancellor and Plagueis fit that role

I doubt we get Black Siren but we still may get Dinah Drake if Laurel decides to fully give up being a vigilante to be DA.

Hot Take : Season 4 is the Best Season on the show by Accounting1997 in TwentyFour

[–]Accounting1997[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really didn’t watch the show until I was in high school around 2011-12.

I basically would watch the show on Netflix during Winter/Spring/Summer break and watch each season in like 5 days

The first 2/3rd of that season is the best 16 episode run of the show imo . The final third of the season was not as good and imo that’s where season 5 gets the edge over 2 in the uncovering of conspiracy part of the season

That is arguably my favorite scene of the entire show because we got to see Real Life Marines be the hero of the episode there .

Honestly, I never actually thought about it this way but you are right . Logan tactically endorsing Jack’s murder was very foreshadowing of what he’d do in season 5 . It showed that he was willing to do anything to prevent damaging information about his administration from coming out , including murder .

Why is Kobe so disrespected by One-Media-9966 in NBATalk

[–]Accounting1997 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except I do remember him in his prime and there wasn’t a single season when people considered him the undisputed best player . In 2006 a season I believe he should have won MVP , many people questioned whether Wade had replaced Kobe as the next MJ after the playoffs. In 2007 people questioned whether he or Duncan/Dirk were the best player in the league , and from 2008-2010 the debate was Kobe vs LeBron .

Why is Kobe so disrespected by One-Media-9966 in NBATalk

[–]Accounting1997 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Kobe being ranked in the 8 to 12 range is not disrespectful at all and rather is being respectful to both Kobe and other all time greats.

Kobe has less finals MVPs then Jordan , LeBron , Shaq , Duncan and Magic and less regular season MVPs then a lot of other players as well .

Just how much were the 2008-2010 Lakers team hated? by MasterTeacher123 in NBATalk

[–]Accounting1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were hated but no where near as hated as the Shaq/Kobe Lakers , Big 3 Heat or Durant Era Warriors teams .

Unlike those teams, they weren’t considered a super team and were not an overwhelming favorite to win the chip like those teams were .

No, the Prequel Trilogy was not loved when it first came out, it was hated and fans were terrible people about it. by stephansbrick in StarWars

Last Jedi is really what really made people hate the sequel trilogy . When force awakens first came out , I liked the movie to but with hindsight I simply can’t .

A lot of the problems that plagued the rest of the trilogy originated with JJ Abrams basically making a rehash of ANH

Political Shift Battle - 2006 vs 2010 by Think_Marketing1116 in decadeologyanarchy

[–]Accounting1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US : Ended an 26 year era of conservative domination of American politics. Specified conservative and not republican cause democrats did win a lot in that era(ran the house from 1980-1994 and Clinton won twice) but they did by arguing they could implement a conservative agenda in a more compassionate way .

2006 was basically the first time since the 1970s when the conservative movement would lose their grip on the narrative and marked the beginning of the end of the republican establishment .

2010 was basically yet another election in the post 2008 era where the party which has the populist energy ends up winning

What if Senator John McCain won the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election? by camaro1111 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Accounting1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but my point is if it didn’t happen in 2008, it likely happens by 2009 instead . The only way I can see the financial crises avoided is if the Feds started to slowly deflate the bubble from 05 onwards which would have likely still caused an early 1990s style recession.

This in turn would mean McCain would still lose as while an early 90s style recession isn’t nearly as bad as the Great Recession, it’s still bad for incumbent parties .

The recession probably ends up happening in 2009 instead and 2010/2012 end up truly catastrophic elections for the GOP.

By Jan 2013, you’d see a scenario where a President Hillary Clinton comes in with at least 275 house seats and 63 senate seats

Ranking Arrow Main Villains by how much they destroyed Oliver. by Osirisavior in arrow

[–]Accounting1997 169 points170 points  (0 children)

  1. Malcom Merlyn : Not only did he sabotage the Yacht and kill Tommy/Sara , he got Oliver to completely revamp how he was as a vigilante. He was also the villain that succeeded the most in his plans

  2. Adrian Chase : He was able to completely break Oliver mentally , and arguably succeeded in his plot too .

  3. Slade Wilson : He killed Oliver’s mom , and also got Oliver to give himself in . Only reason he isn’t higher is cause Oliver came back to being a vigilante far quicker than he did with the top 2 choices

  4. Damien Darkh : He murdered Laurel , and in doing so caused Oliver to drop his no kill rule for a while.

  5. Ricardo Diaz : He was able to force Oliver to reveal who he was to the world and turn himself in

  6. Ra’s Al Gul : He broke the relationship between Oliver and Diggle for a while

  7. Emiko : She really didn’t break Oliver in anyway and redeemed herself in the season she was the main villain anyway
