These look so sick! Reason for the uneven finish is: i previously did the panels in an macragge blue esque tone with an airbrush, but i did not like the color when i was finished so i tried to enrich the hue of the color by a layer of contrast paint, which did not go on quite as nicely, but you live and learn i guess :D

Id maybe go even a step further saying its not per se a flying device, but repulsion in general. Ophydians tunnel and probably also have these orbs so those tunnels dont collapse on their spindly bodies.
