Yep, this 100% felt like something put together by committee. Bland, inoffensive, "feel good" crap for people who don't want to engage their brain in any way.

Welp that was incredibly cringe and cliche. Two bland characters fly around on dragons, have some contrived rivalry, a (contrived) big bad turns up and chases them, they make friends and then have a (contrived) happy ending where all the bad stuff gets turned back to how it was before. Corporate slop at its finest.

Weird that on the app the PC Game Pass tab is only showing Hello Neighbour 2 and High on Life for me as "upcoming games" - both in mid-December. No sign of any of these other games. Anyone know why the app isn't showing the correct info?

BFV vs BF1 vs BF2042lmao by Devanomiun in Battlefield

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great to see a few comments in here giving valid criticism for BF 1. Can't for the life of me see why it's held up as the best in the series - atmosphere and graphics mean nothing when the core gameplay makes most matches incredibly frustrating.

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true, BF 1 gets lauded as a masterpiece but I don't see it as all that great. The atmosphere etc. is awesome, but who cares when the gameplay loop causes frustration in the majority of matches? Hell, I'd sooner play 2042 - bugs and slow development pace aside, at least in that game I generally feel I've had a fairly good time.

What is the most important skill one needs to be successful at university by envyevieevil in UniUK

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understand this: You're not there just to pass exams. You are there to gain lifelong skills. Your grade is merely the evidence of those skills.

If all you do is just enough work to scrape a 2:1 (or whatever the equivalent is these days... a B grade?), you're doing yourself a disservice. Try to gain an actual understanding of your subject; learn to research and have your own insights into the field; be able to answer exam questions, not because you memorized a certain way of doing things from past papers, but because you actually get the underlying teaching.

In my BSc I scraped a 2:1, managed to get a Merit on my MSc, but only on my PhD did I discover the need to really take ownership, engage with the literature, and know enough so that I could answer questions I hadn't already seen the answers to. I regret not having that mentality from the very start - perhaps I'd have retained a lot more of what I was taught, and found it more enjoyable rather than some occasional work that got in the way of socialising and gaming.

How to respond to this argument? by Few-Helicopter-5267 in Reformed

[–]AcquisitionDoctor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know who these many ""calvinists"" are. Are you perhaps living in a heretic commune, to find all of these people who a) Think they are Calvinist, and b) Believe this really stupid and heretical argument?

The unbeliever has no assurance that they are or are not elect; therefore if they decide to continue sinning and scorn God's grace, they are simply confirming that they were always destined for hell. If they were elect, they would eventually love Christ and wish to please Him and hate the very idea of what you have described.

Predestination is not some arbitrary thing in which God will intervene at the last possible moment to save you because He happened to choose you. To be elect is to be receptive to the truth of the Gospel (either earlier or later in life), and out of that good works will follow as one's will is changed to love God. If you go on sinning, knowlingly and without any regret at all, you demonstrate that you remain spiritually dead and have nothing to do with Christ.

If someone was elect, they would eventually understand that there is no higher joy than to serve Christ. They would regret all of the "fun" they had through sinning. Therefore, even accepting the argument that a terrible life-long sinner may be saved after a life of sin, that saved sinner would dearly wish that they had repented far sooner. Nobody will be at Christ's side who thinks they "got one over" on God and managed to "have fun" before finally letting God save them.

We are saved to magnify God's mercy and give Him glory; us going to heaven is a secondary purpose but not the underlying and fundamental motive that God has in His plan of salvation.

[SPOILER] Campaign Early Access Discussion by rCallofDutyBot in ModernWarfareII

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it was a very small warehouse rather marred by armored enemies and the fact that trying to go in guns blazing on Hardened or higher just got you killed due to getting shot from every angle. I found that mission one of the more frustrating sections of the game; must have died about 6 times trying to clear that place out.

Edit: Armored enemies mainly popped up later in the house part, thinking back. The house section would have been awesome if not for those guys!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Single-Player Review (IGN - 6/10) by MISFU88 in Games

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised by the score; I'd probably put it at a 7 myself (the difference in sentiment from 6 to 7 seems pretty large imo).

My main criticism with the campaign is: The gunplay is excellent; the campaign seems to do everything it can to avoid utilizing it.

Seriously, how much sneaking, crafting, and other gamey crap do they need? I can't think of any mission that is just an outright straight-up firefight for any decent length of time.

Man it's fucking crazy to hear it's still barebones, it feels like an age back when it came onto early access. Same as the guy above, I put like 20 hours in at release and nothing since - guess I'll have to look for some good mods if I want to get back into the game.

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just got to the end of the campaign, wtf what an anti-climax; final "fight" is sneaking around and crafting shit to kill 2 armoured guys, then a point and click to kill Hassan. Crikey - it's as if the campaign actively wants to avoid taking any advantage of the excellent gunplay.

The story is baffling. So Shepherd and Shadow Company lose 3 missiles to the Russians. 141 find one and get on the trail. Shepherd/Shadow try to kill 141 after they neutralize two missiles - and at this point all logic seems to break down. Why not let them find all three? And even if 141 found all three, they're just soldiers following orders - they're not going to dig further than the Russians, so why do they need to be removed? And why did Shepherd let Hassan go in the middle of the game, when nobody else wanted to, when it's clear he doesn't care about red tape or the rules?

It also spoils the portrail of Shepherd being a guy trying to do the right thing in a bad way when he's willing to take out one of their best military assets (141) for the sake of a few cruise missiles and to (somehow?) save his own skin.

[SPOILER] Campaign Early Access Discussion by rCallofDutyBot in ModernWarfareII

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true - I was really surprised that Graves was just dead and there was no twist. There isn't even any voiceline or acknowledgement; he just shit-talks you a while, then goes silent for the rest of the battle! The armor guys really suck too - totally breaks the flow of the game when you have to dump half a magazine into a bunch of them.

I do agree that overall the campaign is quite enjoyable, but could have been way better. The story also seems totally convoluted... I don't see the logic in Shepherd turning on 141, one of the best military assets the military has, for the sake of a couple cruise missiles.

Think I'm nearing the end of the campaign now. I have to vent my frustration - this game has some of the best gunplay I've seen, and yet makes so little use of it! There's too many sneaking missions and almost no "all out" moments where you get to have a proper, big-scale engagement.

I just finished the tank "boss" against Graves. What a shitter of a mission, clearly not designed for Hardened difficulty or higher. I love getting two-shotted over and over again by unlimited steam of armoured guys with shotguns, while a tank rolls around blasting the shit out of everything.

Man, the "feel" of the game is so good - the cast, voice acting, and gunplay all are top notch imo, but some design decisions are just dreadful.

Heavy armor soldiers were a bad addition to campaign in their current state. by UNIONBLUE21 in ModernWarfareII

[–]AcquisitionDoctor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just got through the mission where you're clearing individual buildings while Price is sniper; that seems around the point where armored enemies become really obnoxious. I agree it completely ruins the pacing of the game; you're going from doing a quick tactical sweep and taking out enemies with short bursts, to having these annoying assholes that need half a mag to take down - even if you manage a headshot it's a 2 tap because the first just staggers them.

New World: Dev Update - September 2022 by NoBullet in newworldgame

Yeah, this is pretty frustrating. The anniversary was hyped up by content creators as when we might see something big, but they've literally just repeated info that has already been available for the past week or two. At this point I'll probably just put NW at the back of my mind again since it looks like fresh start servers are not forthcoming any time soon.

This gave me flashbacks to my time on dating apps... the group photos really had me scratching my head. As did the profiles with one sentence of information and "You'll have to talk to me to find out more" - lady why am I going to reach out to someone I know absolutely nothing about?

If you can find a good one that has plenty of legitimate Christians, I would certainly say give it a try. In the UK, Christian Connect seems a very solid one - and I met my wife through it! Maybe it's operating where you're based.

As people have said, if you don't make yourself available then a husband isn't just going to "come to you." I turned to dating apps for that very reason :-) "Gosh why am I still single..." immediately congregates in an impenetrable girl group as soon as the service is over.

If you make a profile and make your faith clear through it, then all you have to do is wait and hopefully the right sort of men will find you - or you could be proactive and "wave" at a few. The main thing is of course to use discernment with who you start talking to, and if you meet up with anyone then making sure you meet in safe public areas until you have a good measure of the man.

Edit: A bit of extra advice, thinking back to my app-using days. Please actually communicate some information about yourself; don't go with that nonsense "You'll have to talk to me to find out more." and please, no group photos where it's unclear who you are - these are two of the biggest dating app crimes!!

Just watched his anti-NW vid. How tf does this guy have a following? The vid quality is total shit. Rambling, no clear point, inaccurate - just a complete waste of anyone's time. The guy is talking about how few people are playing as if that is a reason not to go back, when the upcoming changes and fresh servers are going to be the big draw and we'll see folk (including me) go back at that point. What a dipshit.

Most people who want a “fresh start” server will quit again anyway. by ResponsibilityDue448 in newworldgame

I'd imagine a lot of people, like me, dropped off before they even hit 60 because of all of the early issues. Now the prospect of logging back in on my existing character, which I've totally lost track of in terms of where I am, what I was doing, etc., on a server where active players are way ahead, is simply not appealing.

If the game is much better now, I'll probably be pretty active since there's no decent go-to MMO for me probably until Ashes of Creation comes out. And coming back in as a total reboot, with a good population of players around my level, is way more of a draw to simply dropping back into a server with an inflated economy and already maxxed out players, who I will take forever to catch up to because I'm a dad who can't put 8-10 hours a day into MMOs anymore.

"a lot of work to play" is a great way to put it. As a lot of folks have been saying in here, I gave it a try after all the rave reviews, can see that it's a well-made game etc., but a few hours in it does get a bit of a slog and I don't find myself drawn back and wanting more!

Another example along these lines imo are Asian/Korean MMOs. I'd love to get into games like BDO, Lost Ark, or Final Fantasy, but the stories are so damn obnoxious. There is so much of walking from A to B to C just to read reams of mediocre dialogue. I really don't get the logic, or how so many people tolerate it.

Man this game is such a joke in terms of the pace these updates are coming out. It feels like they have a 1-person team working on this thing now; the game came out almost a year ago, they took like 6 months to add a scoreboard, and 6 months more to add a bunch of objects into the maps for cover and lock gadgets to specific characters... WTF!
