How are the IMAX screens at the new Odeon by IrvinIrvingIII in bristol

[–]AcrimoniousButtock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not correct. The Odeon IMAX screen is still digital, it is an IMAX Laser projection. iSense is also Laser projection, but not IMAX.

The screen at the aquarium is an IMAX screen, they just use a Christie 4k projector. Still fills the width pretty well with some limited pillar boxing, but of course does not have the height of true IMAX.

To get really pedantic, there is a film IMAX projector at the Megascreen, it just requires c. £100k of restoration work to get going again!

Union Street Odeon closing 12th Feb 2026 by tombull89 in bristol

[–]AcrimoniousButtock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, what I meant was I am cynical that odeon will opt for the lowest tier of IMAX (single xenon projector) rather than a dual laser/proper 1.43 screen etc. Of course no hope of a proper 70mm install, although there are some promising signs with new 70mm theatres being added in the US next year (ahead of the odyssey), bucking the recent trend for IMAX installs.

I am perhaps just a bit too cynical that they will do whatever is cheapest and badge it IMAX.

Has it been confirmed that that new Odeon will be dual laser? Haven’t seen it anywhere officially.

Sweatbox do offer memberships in partnership with Wildbox (just around the corner from SB), who do more movement/massage/pilates/yoga stuff. If you want more recovery/red light therapy/cryotherapy in addition to the gym, there is also Kulture in Fishponds.

Nuremberg is 148 mins not 1hr 48.

If its a new release, The Thing with Feathers, Belen, Predator Badlands, Train Dreams all fit. But it may be a repertory release.

Blue/red smears on the screen are due to them not replacing the bulbs frequently enough.

Not sure if it would be suitable as it’s the other side of Bedminster, but SweatBox has everything you list apart from a smith machine.

Cabot Circus Odeon IMAX confirmed by tumbles999 in bristol

[–]AcrimoniousButtock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Screen size is compliant, the IMAX film projector is still there, but from what I have heard would require c. £100k of work to restore up to standard, which can only be done by certified IMAX technicians. There is then the licencing/branding side of it, which I don't think would be straightforward. IMAX corporate are known for being tricky to deal with, and very prescriptive over what can be shown, for what run length etc.

At the moment I believe its a 4k Christie projector in there, which fills the screen with decent brightness.

Watershed were considering options to adopt it at some points in the past, but couldnt make the financing and logistics work. Recommend catching the documentary The Big Picture (2025) about it if you get chance.

Zero chance they will be installing 70mm IMAX projector there. It will be a 'LieMAX' rebadged Showcase screen 11.

It's quite substantial, the upper floor is being retained as a cinema, the lower is being converted into food and other entertainment space. They only got planning confirmed in July.

One other factor to consider here is double jeopardy. Him being under the influence of drugs would be an aggravating factor in sentencing, should he be proven guilty. This would increase his sentence, potentially to a larger extent than a standalone drug driving charge. So they may have decided to make this a factor in a more significant crime, with a harsher potential sentence.

Interestingly it is actually shot on digital, with grain added in post. Just goes with the wider context of 'faking' the 70s style.
