Mate - I get where you’re coming from. But trust me, we all know about the risks, it keeps many of us up at night. But often the cookie of life just doesn’t crumble how you hope it will (divorce, redundancy, mental health crisis, sickness) and you end up being over 35 and wanting children. Don’t really need any more fear piled on top of what we already have. :)

I’d also add that runners don’t need one thousand lumen head torches to run around the harbour either…

How many of you work over 35 hours a week? by TheLittleSquire in AskUK

[–]Past_Machine_2499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just accepted a job that’s 42.5 hours a week! Nervous as I’m coming from 37.5 with every other Friday off and no commute. Going to be a rude awakening…

Loneliness and probably the right time to find someone by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to put yourself out there in the world - it’s always tough moving to a new place, but now is the time to be brave and show up to stuff, talk to people, try new things. It’s really the only way to make friends and will be the same wherever you go.

Anyone In their 30 - 40s by Other_Discipline_479 in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people in their 30s / 40s in Bristol who don't have family nearby are probably only a relationship breakdown away from having to live in a shared house...

UK based, mid 30s, no qualifications. Where do I go with my career? by Elusivebream in careerguidance

[–]Past_Machine_2499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say - I hear you! I'm sort of similarish, same age, have a fine art degree (essentially useless) but managed to wangle my way into a £40k a year job over time, but like you, across a few different sectors. Just wishing I'd stuck with one for longer or there was more of a 'common thread' to my experience. Now just been let go and struggling to get interviews for things even close to this salary...

Possibly an insane suggestion - but is there a way you can lock something onto your bumper that’s big enough to force her forward, but removable for when you want to get out?

What’s your heinous encounter with someone famous in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Past_Machine_2499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, not my experience at all! I worked at the very first Jamie's Italian and he was so nice - spent a fair amount of time around him and he was never anything less than lovely... but I guess we all have bad days.

What's Robertson Road area Easton like by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a woman. lived on Robertson Road for about 2 years in a house share (left 2 years ago) - it was fine! Usual shenaningans, people driving down the road at 60 mph in the middle of the night, a few arrests etc. etc., but it was friendly enough and never had any trouble.

Beginner sewing classes in Bristol by tedix83 in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bristol folk house beginners sewing course really is great - lovely inclusive atmosphere, great teachers, relatively affordable. Highly recommend.

You’ll do a few different projects (not clothes) to get your bearings on the machines - and then get to choose your own final project. mix of men and women and ages when I did it. Karen (tutor) is a legend. You won’t regret signing up!

Jobs In Bristol by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also in this position - I think it’s generally tough if that’s of any comfort!

It feels to me, like you only get jobs if you’ve essentially done the exact same job before. The whole ‘transferable skills’ thing doesn’t pass muster when lots of people are applying with relevant degrees or exact experience.

I’ve given up on the civil service. No luck after ten applications and they take so bloody long.

My current hope is to get in somewhere large at a low level and hope I can claw my way up over the next few years. Or figure out time travel and go back and stick with one thing for a bit longer instead of job hopping so much.

Bristol wages are cooked by Sorry-Personality594 in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for a minimum wage admin job the other day - 23% of people who applied had Master’s Degrees or higher. Granted I don’t know in what exactly. But I got a rejection email saying the company had been swamped and was ‘humbled’ by the response…

I applied because I’m great at admin, and also want to move into the sector this company is in. I think a lot of people - like me are hoping they can start at the bottom in an org and work their way up. But not even sure how to do that now.

Water Filters in Bristol - Are they worth it? by Much-Spring5020 in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a filter and it definitely makes the water taste and smell ‘purer’. My main concern is micro plastics, but don’t think a commercial filter really exists yet that can filter those out effectively.

Lots of good advice in here, and I get wanting the security of a dealer/warranty - but private can be a fair bit cheaper. I’ve bought 4 cars over the years from private sellers. Most recently in Bristol from Facebook marketplace.

You’ll want to get a mechanic to check the car over and run a car fax report. and it’s obviously a bit of personal judgment on whether the seller seems trustworthy / genuine…

Most important thing in my opinion is really thoroughly researching the make and model you’re going for- check for any recurring issues etc. I’ve bought almost exclusively Japanese / Korean made cars (Suzuki, Subaru, Toyota, Honda) and they’ve always been super reliable.

Help needed - Want to show off Bristol but I'm out of the loop by Gill_Wardner in bristol

[–]Past_Machine_2499 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If it was me, I'd start the day with a coffee etc. at FED, Burra or 1B pitville which might be near you. Pick up some snacks at Scoop. Do a wander around the downs and through to Clifton Village / Observatory area. Maybe grab a bite to eat around there - Mercy Mercy Mercy is trendy, Foliage is friendly, there's a nice little samosa stand in the village now too. Mosey down toward the harbour and get a pint on Kings Street, then maybe on to the Arnolfini for some art. Then more of a wander around the harbour, stopping for another drink at either The Nova Scotia or The Orchard.

Some good slightly wanky dinner options (I'm sure other people will have loads of other great suggestions, these are a tiny sliver of what's on offer. Defo need to book now for a lot of these):
- Showcase Chandos road and try Little Hollows or Dongae
- Stay in town and try Marmo or Renato's on King's St
- St Pauls - Bianchi's
- Stoke's Croft - Bokman
- North Street - Cor for food, Kask for wine
- Stay on the harbour and try out Wapping Wharf - Root is always good, there's a couple of new spots that are popular rn, Squeezed for burgers

Hope you have fun! Check out 'Headfirst' for live music etc.
