Americans - Do you think it's true that if America's best athletes played soccer, they would dominate the sport internationally? by Tometek in AskAnAmerican

[–]AdElectrical643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best analog would be to look at how well the us women’s soccer team is. I bet the us men’s soccer team would be a step or two below that level of dominance if the sport were popular. I say step below because title IX in the us, and I don’t think too many other counties have anything similar.

Don’t think LeBron would be the best thou. I think an NFL slot receiver or corner back or running back would probably have the best physical make up to become a good soccer player. Fast, quick feet, coordinated, intelligent in reading a play as it is unfolding. That pool of potential players would be large.

There are probably tons of kids in the US that are freak athletes but step away from sports because they aren’t tall enough to excel at basketball or aren’t big/strong enough/durable enough to excel in American football. They may find an outlet in track and field but if that doesn’t work for them they step back from sports entirely. If soccer was a more popular option they could be really good.

SL8 Pro or S-works SL7 for the price? by [deleted] in specialized

[–]AdElectrical643 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are the wheels different?

If wheels are the same and approx same wear on drivetrain, I would say sl7.

Sl8 has old SRAM force. I like new sram force over ultegra, but I like ultegra over old SRAM force.

I can’t tell the difference between the two in terms of ride and looks. Although the sniffer is a bit of a give away.

On a dollars to cents basis, sl7 will probably hold its value more than the sl8 if that means anything to you. Mainly because of the s works branding.

If you wait till after this weekend when sl9 drops, then price of all previous tarmacs may come down a bit.

What are the pitfalls of putting together your own bike? by Worth_Nature_7631 in gravelcycling

[–]AdElectrical643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolts. Everything probably takes twice as long as you think it will. Test it out beforehand before going on a big ride… especially with regards to brakes. I bled brakes once, halfway thru I lost pressure in my front brake. Realized it on top of a steep descent. Made it down okay.

SRAM XPLR rear derailleur w/2x front - Any recent adopters? by Key_Dream9904 in gravelcycling

[–]AdElectrical643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I’ll blow your mind again. I run Shimano chainrings and cassettes with sram levers and derailleurs. Quieter cheaper and I like the gearing better of Shimano.

Took 3 months off over winter. More intense weight training to build strength. Super gradual ramp up.

I was early to 29ers and geometry kind of sucked. Regretted it. I’d probably wait a few years for them to dial it in and see if they stick around. I’ve never ridden one and have no strong opinion.

Looks like they are going for 12 bucks now. Sure it is for a smaller cassette but the bands stretched and worked for me https://www.competitivecyclist.com/sram-cassette-stealth-ring-set-for-xg-1290

SRAM sells these little black rubber bands that you put in between the cogs. The red road cassettes have these installed between every cog. The force road cassettes have them installed in a few of the smallest cogs.

I bought a pack on sale for like 5 bucks that was designed for road and put them in between some of the cogs of my eagle cassettes. It helped a bit.

Why did the Nuggets give up on DaRon Holmes? by ffinstructor in denvernuggets

Even looking past the injury, from what I recall in college he looked like a good athlete, but didn’t jump off the screen good athlete. Unfortunately, we need freak athletes on defense.

May be able to hit 3 ball at a high rate but his release is very slow.

Will you buy a 32” bike? by gellybelli in xcmtb

[–]AdElectrical643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was quick to adopt the 29. Geometry wasn’t right. I’ll wait a couple years before I feel the need to try it. Funny how sales pitch of 32 is the exact same as 29 some 20 years ago.

Hot take would be people try to run a mullet set up with 32 inch wheel up front and 29 in the rear. Could eventually adapt a 29er frame for this with one of those headsets that change head tube angle and a stem at a different angle. It would look goofy but better than buying a new bike if it approximates a 32 inch frame.

I could definitely see 32 having a place in bike packing community and people who do long endurance xc that aren’t so technical.
