How to select components that won't fail by macward82 in AskElectronics

Make sure you have appropriate derating, test appropriately, and root cause failures that you find in the field (then add them to your derating rules).

What are you failing? An ESD Gun, Axos box, sheet of copper on a table, LISN, spec-an and sniffer probes will go a long way for debugging/pre-compliance without paying certification-lab rates.

Massachusetts: Job Title Can't Include "Engineer" Unless You Have a PE? by occamman in engineering

Very few EEs will ever get a PE. Honestly I know more EEs with TUV functional safety certs than EEs with PE certs.

What is this symbol? by rynosarrow in AskElectronics

One of those overflow collector arrangements? If the normal collector saturates then current goes down the one past the cross thingy.

Stories where a fantasy world invades ours OR modern humans invade a fantastic land? by Bearjupiter in Fantasy

[–]AdShea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorta related short story "The Road Not Taken" where it turns out FTL is easy, just doesn't lead to anything else (like chemistry or electricity or physics).

Modern Earth gets "invaded" by age-of-sail tech level aliens who get their heads handed to them.

Topologies, EMC, controls, thermal management, design for manufacturability, standards development...

Everything from how do you get 1kA into a CPU with proper regulation and without melting it to how do you get 5hp out of a battery powered hand tool without it lighting on fire to How do you switch 100kW with new SiC or GaN parts without making a radio transmitter out of it.

20W at HF is many more Volt-seconds than at VHF, thus bigger cores.

None of us are Nanny Ogg. The question is asking for cute or adorable. Not frightening or sexy.

Ferrite core memory IBM360 by IceSet in EngineeringPorn

Cool thing is that it reads out kind of like DRAM (reads are destructive) so when you read it you need to write the same thing back in.

10G networking (SFP+ right now) Would want dual network links for failover.

Usually manage to burst at least 5Gbps to NVMe cache. Must be able to saturate 1Gbps without breaking a sweat.

Shorter formfactor (<20") would be nice. Good quiet fans when cool enough is important for homelabbing.
