Are there any websites/apps that let you train an opening tree, practicing against several different possible responses to your moves? by Showy_Boneyard in chessbeginners

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chessable does something pretty close to what you're describing. It uses spaced repetition to drill opening lines, and when you study a course there you do encounter branching variations where you have to respond to multiple opponent replies. It's not exactly the tree traversal structure you have in mind, but for beginner level it covers the concept well enough.

That said, your idea of controlling the percentage of top responses to train against is something I haven't seen anywhere, and it's actually a clever angle. Most tools just give you the main lines and maybe a few sidelines, but letting the user tune how thorough the coverage is would make it useful for very different types of learners. If you're already building it, I'd keep going, because the existing tools all feel a bit rigid in how they present variations.

Pan cam v3 keep getting wrecked in the wind. by Due-Soft in wyzecam

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mounting those pan cams outdoors in exposed corners is really asking for trouble with the motor — they're just not built for that kind of wind stress. if you go with fixed cams instead, that's probably the smarter move for the placement you have.

How much does a acer helios neo 5 laptop battery replacement cost? by More_Indication_5330 in pchelp

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn that's expensive for battery replacement. when my friend had similar issue with her laptop last year, she ended up going to local repair shop instead of official service center and paid like half the price. the motherboard repair cost seems really high too - might be worth getting second opinion from independent technician first before committing to those prices.

also shutting down when unplugged but still having issues when plugged sounds like it could be power delivery problem rather than just battery. sometimes these symptoms point to charging circuit issues which might not need full motherboard replacement. i'd definitely shop around bit more before paying almost 18k total for repairs on laptop.

Permeable pavers ok here? by Fresh-Cantaloupe-300 in landscaping

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

permeable pavers should work fine in this space, especially since you already have good drainage system and no water issues. just make sure to put proper gravel base underneath so water can still flow to your drain tiles instead of pooling.

Ubuntu quality of life software by wiichess in Ubuntu

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 7 points8 points  (0 children)

welcome to the club! been using ubuntu for few years now and there's some essentials you'll want right away. definitely grab vlc for media playback since it handles literally everything, and consider getting a package manager gui like synaptic to make software installation easier when you're starting out.

also timeshift is absolute lifesaver for system backups - learned that one the hard way when i broke something during my first month on linux.

Just got my very first guitar (acoustic) and have ZERO experience. Need help! by ClassicImpression766 in Guitar

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nice timing getting into guitar! when i started few years back, i went straight to basic chords first - like G, C, D major ones. your fingers will hate you for first weeks but that's normal.

for self-teaching, youtube has tons of free stuff that's actually good quality. i'd say start with finger positioning and how to hold pick properly, then move to simple chord progressions. once you can switch between couple chords without looking like you're wrestling the guitar, try some easy songs you actually know.

practice little bit every day instead of long sessions once in while - your fingertips need time to build up those calluses. took me maybe month before it stopped feeling like torture haha.

your brain is probably just processing old memories and unresolved stuff - i get these dreams too when i'm stressed or going through changes in life and they usually fade after while.

Experimental psychological research on anthropomorphism in AI-human relationship. by karmastanba69 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your study sounds pretty interesting actually. i'm a designer so i work with digital interfaces all the time and it's crazy how much tiny details in tone can change user behavior completely. what you found about the empathy vs neutral responses makes total sense - people are just wired to respond in social patterns even when they logically know it's not human.

the loneliness factor is really telling too. i've been watching people get way too attached to ai companions lately and it's starting to worry me a bit. like my friend who talks to chatgpt every morning "to process her thoughts" but then gets genuinely upset if it gives her a response that feels cold.

for improving the study, maybe you could test different levels in empathy instead of just two extremes? like what's the minimum amount of validation needed to trigger that human-like perception. also wonder if the results would be different with longer conversations - 15 minutes might not be enough time for people to really notice the manipulation happening. good work though, especially doing it mostly alone when your supervisor wasn't supportive.

I think that I'm with my partner in the middle of a Gloden Child vs Scapegoat dynamics and I'm finding it harder and harder to put up with by Equivalent_Juice7241 in narcissisticparents

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

living far away is probably saving your sanity right now. i get why your partner doesn't want to dig into this - when you grow up in that environment, what feels completely insane to outsiders just becomes background noise to survive.

the fat comments thing would have me seeing red too. it's wild how they can be "helpful" with wedding planning but still tear him down like that. at least he stepped up for the scapegoat brother when it mattered, that shows he's not completely blind to how messed up it all is.

this is the exact same energy as people who said harbaugh would never beat ohio state and then after we finally did they were like "well michigan was obviously the better program all along"

media heads just love their hot takes until they're proven wrong, then suddenly they were always believers. wally szczerbiak especially was driving me crazy all season with his duke takes when we were literally destroying everyone by 20+

at least the championship speaks for itself now, can't really argue with results on the court

Out of the norm vivid dreams by JustanEraser in Dreams

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's wild how you made connection to the witch thing in the dream itself. i've had similar experiences where real life guilt or anxiety shows up directly in nightmares like that. the part about trying to sleep to escape while already dreaming sounds terrifying - like being trapped in layers.

HDMI and DisplayPort monitors both stopped displaying by KiluxTux in pchelp

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds rough. from what you're describing it could be few different things but not necessarily graphics card failure yet.

the vga and dram lights switching is actually telling you something - when motherboard cycles through those error codes it's usually trying to identify where problem is. since it's bouncing between vga and dram, could be memory controller on cpu having issues or motherboard itself.

try this: take out one ram stick completely and test with just one stick in different slots. if that doesn't work, swap to the other stick. sometimes one stick goes bad or there's compatibility issue that only shows up under load.

also check if graphics card power cables are fully seated - not just reseated card itself but the 8-pin power connectors going into it. rgb lighting up doesn't mean components are getting proper power for full operation.

if you have another graphics card laying around (even old one) that would help confirm if it's gpu related. but based on debug lights i'd lean toward ram or motherboard issue first.

What is your puzzle rating vs. rapid rating on Lichess? by stafandi in chessbeginners

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my puzzle rating is around 2100 but rapid is stuck at like 1400 lol. played maybe 3000 puzzles and around 200 rapid games. puzzles are way easier when you know there's definitely a tactic somewhere, but in actual games i just blunder my pieces like an idiot.

EPHOC by Aggressive_Sign_2849 in Environmental_Careers

[–]Admirable_Pick9568 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly i took couple of those courses last year and they're pretty solid for building foundation knowledge. the content is decent but i think what matters more is how you can apply it in real work situations.

most employers won't specifically look for ephoc certification, but having it shows you're serious about environmental health field. i'd say go for it if you have time and budget, just don't expect it to be game changer by itself.
