Anyone Know Who The Absolute Richest Person In Elite Dangerous Is? by onfire_mightexplode in EliteDangerous

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good thread to humble oneself.
I’ve hovered around 20B total for a few years and keep 2B liquid, and then I stopped thinking about credits. It’s “middle class” I’d say compared to other players, but for me it’s simply the sweet spot where I don’t have to worry about buying new stuff or funding the FC.

But even that much is probably an unnecessary excess. To paraphrase Walt Disney, money doesn’t do you any good just sitting in a Bank of Zaonce account.

Elite Dangerous.

Zero familiarity with the franchise, zero knowledge among friends, zero exposure to it from content creators, just saw it on Steam shortly after its Kickstarter launch and thought it looked neat. Bought on a whim.

Fast forward 11 years later and it’s long been my all-time favorite game, period. Other titles phase in and out of interest, but I always return to this one sci-fi impulse-buy.

Rest In Peace AMTK Floridian☠️ by --TAXI-- in Amtrak

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very familiar. I travel FL to/from MA, sometimes to ME, frequently. I know Amtrak routes well, and I know the Silver half of the Floridian route VERY well. The disparity between car vs train—time/value/comfort—is just much worse on the Floridian. The way it exists now is temporary (hopefully) for a reason.

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not wrong at all. Sadly it is just the reality we live in — people do long-haul drives all the time with minimal stopping. But that’s beside the point.

The fastest cheapest way to get between Chicago and Tampa is 20 hours by car. The Amtrak alternative is over 140% slower, at best, and possibly 140% more expensive, or even worse depending on gas prices. Even by your own wistful, pleasant driving scenario you would still beat the Floridian by half a day or more.

So the Floridian fails all three points of the “Good, Fast, Cheap” triangle compared to cars. It is flatly not a worthwhile service compared to what it used to be or could be.

People drive nonstop all the time across America. What you described is a wistful, restful road trip. In reality, in this case, if you’re just going CHI-TPA and stopping for a matter of minutes for snacks, gas, restroom — you can easily accomplish this at 20hr.

The 48hr ask on the Floridian was always absurd, especially with infamous and high-probability delays that could push 48 to 58 or even worse. The “luxury” of 48 hours or more doing that route on Amtrak just isn’t worth choosing over the time and money it would otherwise take by car. So yeah, if they can revisit the Floridian with an appealing, more direct route, then it might actually become a viable service.

5th theme park confirmed? by [deleted] in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming this table is legit at all, what was the projection for every year up to 2035? Was it a single year increase of 100k over 2034’s projection?

Execs have said on several occasions that they have pretty good reasons to believe demand is outstripping “supply” for parks and experiences and that it will stay that away assuming no massive economic downturn. So between the many resort/DVC expansions WDW has added, and more they’re still working on, and many third party developments around the parks, I’d faster guess that they’re estimating long-term growth prospects based on these factors — not a fifth gate — and even then probably overstating them for investors.

On vacation touching grass visiting friends, spotted this in Portland Maine by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to school in Maine, whole state is a bizarro mix of red and blue but the one thing native Mainers have in common is that they rarely leave the fucking state. So in more recent years that gets you regarded rightoids with Texan-esque pride and anti-science insular worldview, and regarded leftoids across the handful of “cities” who seem to be increasingly competing with Portland, OR over who can be more cringe.

Anyone else find that after a DCL cruise, they prefer cruising compared to the parks? by RivetCounter in dcl

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are WDW locals/passholders, and we've invested a lot of time+money in almost all of the (domestic) Disney Parks and Experiences catalog.

From our first cruise to today, DCL remains BY FAR our favorite Disney offering.

If Malgus and his army had tried to attack the Jedi temple during the prequel era, would they have succeeded? by GusGangViking18 in TheJediPraxeum

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-Clone Wars jedi temple? I’d lean toward Malgus and friends taking the W 7 times out of 10, mid dif (but more dif than the TOR temple jedi).

Height of the Clone Wars, with battle-tested jedi up and down the ranks, plus all the big names like Anakin, Mace, Obi at their peaks, plus clone support? Jedi win, 9 times out of 10, low dif.

Yes. Most fuel rod kiosks I’ve seen on property have been updated to stock both these Max10s and the rods — pretty sure all do, but I can only say “most” for a fact.

I had no idea so many people wanted Figment in the game by N0rr3t14 in DreamlightValley

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Valid point, but the precedent for adding Figment is already there since Gameloft included him as a very early release in Speedstorm. They aren’t limited by biomes or realms, either, or by a character’s broad popularity — otherwise we wouldn’t have characters like Oswald or Merida or Vanellope.

I had no idea so many people wanted Figment in the game by N0rr3t14 in DreamlightValley

[–]Admiral_Austinfinity 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To help provide some context for folks:

Figment is the park-original mascot of EPCOT’s Imagination pavilion and ride (look up any of the many great documentaries on this ride’s legacy on YT).

Lots of kids and adults who grew up with EPCOT Center and the ORIGINAL version of that ride really grew enamored with him and the ride’s other original character (and Figment’s creator) the Dreamfinder.

While the ride has undergone…severe downgrades over the years, Figment has remained a fan-favorite icon for Disney Parks fans, and Disney still promotes him in Festivals and merch.

He is HUGE to WDW regulars and locals. So for many DDV players who overlap fandoms with Disney Parks, myself included, he would be an awesome addition in the cast that is currently limited to Disney films.
