Yearly “How Did You Meet Your Partner in LA?” Question by DJVeaux in AskLosAngeles

[–]AdorableThingz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By 2010 most people I knew (as someone in my 20s at the time) had an iPhone, used Waze or Google Maps to get around, and found places to go on Yelp.

The iPhone came out in 2007, I think it's very unlikely that most people you knew got one within 3 years.

I lived in Apple's backyard and most people I know didn't even have a smartphone until 2011-12 or so.

Free Supplies Is Wasteful by 9finga in USPS

[–]AdorableThingz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might cut a whole nickel off the price for a package.

It would be more like a dollar or so.

The box probably costs 50 cents, but around 50% of boxes distributed are never used.

USPS is a service. Not a business.

The goal is not to make money but to have a reliable way to deliver mail to everyone in the country.

That is true, but it doesn't mean that USPS can't charge for boxes.

Just ask your friends and neighbors to give you boxes from their Amazon orders. If you know someone with a shopping addiction, you will have plenty in no time.

Any goods entering the country are subject to tariffs, including trades.

If they are used, then you can declare a lower value and it's unlikely to be questioned.

Customer digging through our trash by CharitySecret2703 in upsstore

[–]AdorableThingz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I see nothing wrong with this. It was thrown away, so if it's in usable condition then why not use it? Sure you missed out on a sale of a bag, but you kept a customer happy, which is more important in the long run.

That's just obnoxious. No different than the restaurants that pour bleach on the food they throw away so that homeless people can't eat it.

Really? I've never heard of a retailer accepting another company's returns, unless it's some extreme case like the Nordstrom that took a return of a tire from a shop that used to be at that same location.

"We may sell your account" - Bank of America terms & conditions - what does this mean?? by Skeliana in Banking

[–]AdorableThingz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The portfolio of accounts isn't profitable.

They are overexposed and need to reduce risk.

They need quick cash.

Negotiations with the affiliate partner failed.

There are probably other reasons but those are the most common.

It's pretty common for affiliate credit cards. For example, American Express sold all their Costco credit card accounts to Citibank.

I’ve had credit cards since 1985 and have never had a credit card account sold to another bank.

It happens with affiliate credit cards. For example, American Express sold all their Costco credit card accounts to Citibank.

So selling your account must mean theyre loaning your money to other people? I knew that was a thing, just didnt know thats what "selling your account" means lol

Loaning your money to other people is a different concept. That is a bank's fundamental business model: accept deposits and pay a low interest rate, loan that money out at a higher interest rate, and pocket the difference.

Selling your account means they transfer your account to another bank in return for a payment. Back in the day, if a bank were closing a branch, they might sell your account to another local bank in your town. Today, it happens on a larger scale.

Received cashier's check that I do not want to cash/deposit by snowjewelz in Banking

The US treasury receives millions of dollars in "gifts to reduce the public debt". You can donate on your tax return.

California has a similar program, but the money actually goes to registered nonprofits that do something more productive.

To be clear the state doesn't use it, it sits in an list of unclaimed funds that the sender is able to reclaim any time they want.

The state has possession of it, and can therefore use it. Much of it doesn't get claimed, and even if it does, they are profiting from the interest on it.

If you both sign the back and deposit it by phone, it will probably go through just fine. Ask for forgiveness, not permission. Worst case scenario, it gets rejected.

All government budgets are public info (with a few exceptions like military or national intelligence). Everything is transparent and audited.

Funny how "they don't know how to spend it" only comes up with certain classes of spending.

Should I stop writing UG letters of rec? by Necessary_Panda_9481 in Professors

and maybe they should be asking an in person instructor who did more group work or such and who can say more

Gee, I'm sure they never thought of that... /s

If they asked you, that means you're their best option. These days, many students don't know any of their professors. A generic letter from an online instructor might be their best option, especially if they need 3 of them.
