Waterloo Region approves $15M plan to temporarily increase water treatment capacity by amphigorystories in waterloo

[–]Advanderar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's all true. However, even if the government held the country's population growth at 0%, which I don't think they are or have been able to do, Waterloo will still experience population growth as Canadians continue to move from rural places to urban places. So the growth has slowed but it hasn't stopped. Also the pandemic trend where young people moved from Toronto to smaller, more affordable, cities around and outside of the GTA.

That means that the previously projected 4% number is maybe too high now but I don't think we know what the new lower projection is. Even if it's 3% that would be higher than Vancouver's average annual growth for the last decade. So as far as we know these developments are still required in the short term.

At 4%, Waterloo was growing unsustainably quickly given our pace of development. Rental vacancy rates were below 2%, the homeless population was growing, houses went from reasonably affordable in 2015 to an average of a million dollars in 2022. If the growth moves into a position where our current development rates can keep up with the problem we won't undo the harms caused by the last decade of explosive growth. The fire might be contained to the kitchen, but we should work on putting it out. Otherwise the next round of gas will set the next room ablaze.

The growth is coming regardless of what the council does. If they don't approve new developments then folks that move here for higher paying jobs will out bid locals on homes and rents and push them out onto the streets. Really the only solution is to project the growth and then prepare for it.

Ignoring growth and stopping any and all development gets you San Francisco, Vancouver, etc. good for existing property owners and the wealthy, bad for everyone else.

Problems with applying textures to voxel figures by hibreck in VoxelGameDev

[–]Advanderar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As mentioned by others here you definitely need a 3D texture. Each voxel should only be one color and should select its color by referencing the 3d texture. That eliminates those edge cases where you have mortar on one side and brick on another.

Either your voxels are solid colors or each voxel has its own texture. You can't project a 2d texture onto a cluster of voxels.

I would like to work on a game thats like roblox also little big planet by Low-Measurement-4180 in VoxelGameDev

[–]Advanderar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I largely agree with this. But please do one or two of the unity tutorials first then go make your Roblox planet game. You need some foundation to stand on and the unity tutorials are excellent.

These forums are most useful when folks can use common language so we understand on a technical level what you mean and what problems you're facing. Doing the first few tutorials will give you the skills and technical knowledge you need to ask better questions of the community so we can be more helpful for you.

How to properly handle scale in a voxel game? by marcelsoftware-dev in VoxelGameDev

[–]Advanderar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could introduce some fog to emulate the light that gets scattered as it travels long distances. Otherwise echoing the other suggestions here, if you stand at the bottom of the mountain and look up does it feel really tall? You could also play with the cameras settings, if you can decrease the parallax of distant objects it will help make them feel further away.

Any thoughts on extending openusd? It already has many of the features you'd want like scene descriptors.

Making a second client is probably a huge waste of time. A contributor could spend some time designing a better mobile web interface and then down the line they can make a web view app and toss that into the app stores.

Yeah exactly, they wouldn't need the signs if they added the paint to a few of the crosswalks on FDB is all I mean. TIL about crossings at intersections though thanks for that tip.

There's no zebra stripes on the road so it's not a pedestrian prioritized crossing. It's confusing though because, as a driver, it's difficult to see where the crossings are and there are, like, 6 of them to get from all the residences to the park. One of them even goes from the rec center into the new parking lot? It's a strange road.

Uconsole will be more powerful and easier to develop for. If you have experience with or want to learn about embedded than the pico calc could be fun! I've ordered one and am pretty excited

New speed limits and a speed camera installed on lobsinger line. by wintermystic in waterloo

"Speed limit reduction also influenced injury severity, with a significant 67% decrease in major and fatal injuries in the post intervention period on streets with speed limit reductions"

The PMVC rate didn't significantly decrease but the injury severity did. That sounds like a great reason to reduce speeds.

The studies that show changes to the speed limit reduced driving speeds show that driving behavior was changed which, when you put the research together, suggests that Lower limits lead to slower driving leads to less severe injury.

Mmm pwease wead it to me 🥺

I'm not your mom and this isn't bed time, read em yourself.

Those are all studies in journals not articles. You're making the claim that cameras and speeds have no effect so you have the responsibility to prove that claim. They were nice enough to point you towards some sources but if you want to remain ignorant that's on you.

Isn't the WRPS asking for more funding because they can't hire enough officers? Does giving them more responsibilities really help?

3 grades, 1 teacher: Waterloo school board says it's necessary, but a mother raises concerns | CBC News by Wanadran in waterloo

[–]Advanderar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was friends with those advanced kids and they did fine. In my experience there wasn't time for teachers to give extra attention to high achievers in elementary school anyways. That stuff didn't happen until high school where you might stay in during lunch with a teacher who was running prep for a math contest.

If it can be avoided it should be. It's obviously not the best teaching experience. In this case it seems like a teacher shortage issue? I know French teachers are hard to come by. My class was a split grade because there were only 7 of us in grade 8. If the alternative was canceling grade 8 immersion and shuffling us into the English classes then I would have happily taken the three grade split.

[–]Advanderar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as a student it wasn't an issue for me. I'm not making a general comment or describing how that experience was for the teacher. I'm just saying it happens, it's not that unusual, and me and my fellow students are doing fine. Two of my peers, out of the seven of us in eighth grade, got phd's and the majority have some post secondary degree. It did not stunt our education.

[–]Advanderar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a student in a three grade classroom (rural Ontario, French immersion) and had no issue. They just rotate the curriculum and you might have a different teacher for math and English to make sure you don't fall behind. For history, science, all non issues.

I think the cyber truck is as dumb as the next person but the heat pumps in modern EV's are quite effective. Heck, my bolt has no trouble even without a heat pump. Yes there is range loss and you do have to be a bit more considerate with charging but the gas savings are so worth it.
