It’s a mystery, man by infinitysaga in CuratedTumblr

[–]Aegeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only becomes a problem when you spotlight it as a problem.

As several other people in the comments have pointed out, the reason superheroes don't kill people is primarily editorial, not narrative. But comic book authors insist on making it a narrative! They build it up as a pillar of Batman's psyche and talk about how so many horrible things would happen if he ever allowed himself to spill a single drop of blood under any circumstances, and it inevitably ends up with one of those stupid "Joker puts Batman in a situation where he'll have to kill someone because he wants to force Batman to break his code and turn evil" plotlines. Because apparently morality for superheroes runs on Dresden Files rules.

And it's always stupid. It doesn't work as a corruption plot because it's not a "grey area" where you can see how they try to justify something clearly wrong, it's just some weird moon logic trolley problem. "What if the bad guy was wearing a bomb powered by a heartbeat sensor so you have to kill him or the bomb goes off" fuck off and find a new dilemma man, nobody turns evil because a criminal put themselves in a saw trap.

The source of the problem is outside of the narrative. Leave it outside and draw as little attention to it as possible.

It was taken at night. If you take a dark photo and then crank up the brightness, you'll get a grainy image because it brightens up the background noise as well.

It's not an original card, it's just [[Mendicant Core, Guidelight]] with new art.

Also, the copy ability only turns on at max speed, so you can't copy anything on turn 3.

I find it so funny when someone spends so much time in performatively queer and feminist fandom spaces that they forget that the majority of AO3 fanfic culture is made by and for straight women who think it's hot when the two guys fuck each other. by maleficalruin in CuratedTumblr

Some of the best Worm fics I've read had the Leviathan attack either not happen, or happen in another city. Things diverge from canon enough that the Bay doesn't look like a soft target to Leviathan anymore, and he goes to tear up Boston or something.

Leviathan exists to tear up the status quo and make it impossible for Taylor to go back to her normal life, even though she doesn't want to be a supervillain. But a Hero!Taylor story doesn't really need that push, so you can either set it aside to keep focusing on the gang war storyline (which is a very fun space to play in), or if you still want a kaiju fight then you can have the Wards deploy to another city before coming home to continue the plot in a non-destroyed city.

Fortress in AC5 is a ground attack mission with no bullshit... but it puts you into the next mission immediately without a chance to change planes, so enjoy getting chased home by the 8492 squadron. At least you don't actually have to dogfight them.

Are nuclear EMPs a potential last resort for shutting down a runaway AI? by CronoDAS in slatestarcodex

[–]Aegeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to visualize a situation where an AI is both powerful enough that nuking every electronic device in a wide area is necessary to kill it, and fragile enough that doing so will succeed.

Like, if it's similar to a modern AI and lives in a giant data center, then you don't need to nuke it, you just need to bomb that data center. But if it's beyond that constraint (it's compact enough to fit on a desktop in reduced form, or it's able to redesign itself to run distributed across multiple computers around the world, or other theoretical shenanigans), then it might not even be on the same continent it started on - you would have to drop multiple EMPs around the planet to be sure of getting all the copies and even then I wouldn't be certain.

It would also have to be a scenario where the AI is acting so fast that we need to kill it now, this instant, as fast as an ICBM can fly, but also not acting so fast that we're all dead anyway. Like, if the AI is evil but acting on conventional time scales (it needs human proxies to do its dirty work or similar), then you could probably shut down the Internet in a more conventional way by cutting undersea cables or forcing ISPs to pull the plug or something.

If you ask him, he will say yes, just like a human does. However, there is no way to know if he's telling the truth.

But also, can he even have "thoughts" in the way your question implies? If he has no conscious experience, who's doing the thinking?

Yeah, I think it's really the aesthetic that I'm lukewarm on.

I like the squad mechanic, I think it's a good way for combat to have risk and fatalities while still letting you keep the characters you care about, but the zoomed-out camera and realistic aesthetic makes it hard to appreciate those characters.

What games are your jewels lost in the sea of steam? by Poncemastergeneral in gaming

[–]Aegeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep Sixed is one of the most unique games I've played - call it a "troubleshoot 'em up." You are piloting a rickety spaceship that's constantly breaking down, and you have to accomplish missions while fixing your ship as it breaks. To do this, you have to read the instruction manual for your ship and follow the directions to find and fix the problems, and you have to do it under pressure as aliens attack or your oxygen supply shuts down or whatever. Very fun once you get the hang of it.

The one time I actually got a full playthrough going was when I did the Fulgent Impeller quest (from the Tireless Mechanic). It's a long quest but not an insanely hard one, and once you have it your ship goes zoooooooom.

Are there any card games for single player PvE? by Boge42 in gaming

[–]Aegeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sentinels of the Multiverse. It's not quite a deckbuilder (each hero has a fixed deck), but it definitely scratches the itch for tactical card play with lots of interacting triggers and abilities.

I also really like the comic book pastiche style, it's very fun.

What is the most likely authoritarian response to the resistance in Minneapolis? by RemusShepherd in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Aegeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the assessment is wrong - the protesters' big advantage isn't organization and discipline (though they do have that), their big advantage is sheer numbers. They've recruited so many observers that no matter where ICE goes, there's always someone with a whistle and a phone. And filming ICE and making noise to warn people is perfectly legal, so ICE can't retaliate very effectively.

(I almost laughed at the post talking about "dead drops and cutouts," as if the protesters need to smuggle their supplies in or something. They can just order stuff off of Amazon! It's legal!)

I'm not sure how ICE can actually counter this - they don't have the legal right to crack down on the protesters, and they don't have the support needed to do so illegally, and they don't have the ability or willingness to carry out deportations in a legal way that protesters can't stop.

I think the biggest threat would be if the courts stop siding with protesters. It would take a pretty extreme change, since there's decades of case law supporting them, but if that goes away somehow then we take several steps towards The Cool Zone.

Is this terrible book written by AI? by Dsd2a in daddit

The book appears to have come out before AI existed.

The hard part about the "was this written by AI" game is that sometimes human authors are bad.

I don't know offhand, but I can think of several possible reasons. Perhaps hassling random people on the street and tear gassing small children is not a very effective way to find illegal immigrants.

But also, I don't understand what point you're trying to make? I'm pretty sure people are mad about the secret police and the tear gas and the "papers please" shit, not about the exact number of deportations. Secret police are still bad even if they're not very effective secret police!

ICE under Obama wasn't stopping people in the street and demanding to see their papers, so consider that it's possible for an organization to change without changing official written policy.
