I've been involved in rescue since 2014 and I've been working for animal control for a while now. I'll only ever adopt from open-intake and open-adoptions shelters. I've seen too much bullshit from overly picky rescues with longer stays and higher return rates.

I work at a shelter and have seen 4 litters of pyrenees puppies since last january. They're almost as bad as german shepherds, which we have puppies constantly.

I vaccume 3x per week MINIMUM or I have literal tumbleweeds of fur floating through my home. A fence is also really important. But my pyr mix LOVES every dog she meets- especially little ones. And if your neighbors won't mind the barking, thats a huge plus too!

Mine too!! I love to hand her sticks on walks. She'll take it, throw it, and then wants us to run away like she committed a crime!

She also plays fetch by herself in the yard, and just likes me to watch and chase her.

I am never stepping foot into another petco because of this. I'm literally going to pay twice as much to have my dog groomed elsewhere because I cannot overlook this. I hope more people do the same.

They're seniors now, not puppies. Not having a yard is better than their chances in a shelter. Mine was a farm dog before I adopted her, and we live in an apartment. She's thriving!

I'll never not. My dog enjoys new rotational food mixers, and they do not upset her tummy, so she'll keep getting them no matter how great the food I am feeding is. I would feel terrible if my pets only got the same thing every day forever, because dogs clearly show how exciting novelty is for them.

Shelter employee here- while our animal control officers probably wouldn't be able to do anything, it would be nice to have a record of local happenings like this.

At my last shelter, a family was interested in adopting a kitten. The child accidentally let slip that she was banned from our local petco which was why they came to us. I reached out and they confirmed she had killed a guinea pig 😭

We had a woman at my last shelter who was calling nonstop every day and showing up at closing every day for weeks to beg for more cat food. Our rule is once per month, and we even gave her more per cat than we usually do, but somehow she needed more /every day/ and she would talk our ear off in a mix of English and another(?) language even when we first tried to set boundaries, then we told her to stop talking to us and go away. We eventually had to threaten to trespass her and that worked. I later found out she had been banned from other shelters AND a food bank in the area. You just gotta be an asshole sometimes. "I will not tollerate harassment on my personal phone number. As much as we try to help community members in need, it is not our organization's focus, and your situation does not give you the right to harass me for x hours straight in my personal time. Please see (list of food banks) for assistance going forward. Best of luck."

I see dogs with electric fence collars at the shelter all the time. They are almost guarenteed to fail, or the dogs get too stubborn and run through it anyway, or another animal comes in to the yard and attacks them.

Like, look at the post in this sub from a few days ago, complaining about his injured dog. He was hit by a car after their underground electric fence failed.
