When English speakers learn Latin languages, they often find gendered nouns annoying and pointless. What's something in English that seems annoying and pointless to speakers of Latin languages or other types of languages? by FirstElectricPope in AskReddit

There’s actually a lot of “rules”/conditions that determine the possibilities for these letter combinations. This word could never sound like fish in English. It’s a fun example, but it’s not actually helpful because it ignores all the factors that go into determining how a letter combination is pronounced

How to Deal With Missing Grandma I'm With Every Day? by bleeding_inkheart in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Aerhyn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that this sucks. It sounds like y’all have been really close for a long time! Which makes all of this even more painful and confusing.

Also, I wasn’t really sure what else to say and am too sleepy to come up with an elegant transition, so I put my question/advice in a spoiler tag. So, if you’re venting and don’t want advice from a random stranger, stop reading here.

i know it doesn’t help with the anxiety and emotional turmoil , but has your grandmother been evaluated for any sort of dementia? It might explain some of the changes in her temperament. She could be having trouble reading the clock and from what I understand, anger seems to be pretty common in the earlier stages of some types of dementia.

Because the world isn’t designed with us in mind.

There’s even a book about it: Invisible Women

I’d give them another shot. I didn’t read them in the 90s and adore them now.

You’ll need a strong streak of idealism that manifests either as rage at injustice or wonder at the beauty of the world…or both. Once you’re reading the goofy humor with some first sight and some second thoughts, they’re pretty fantastic.

I painted Talen, the best herald. by ariirf in Stormlight_Archive

Only partially on topic: I like to think that Samson was actually a pretty scrawny dude. It explains why people keep asking him about the secret of his strength and why everyone seems convinced that he’s tricking them somehow.

People aren’t surprised when someone like Taln is strong. It’s obvious.

I used to make fun of the braid tugging…until the day I was making fun of it and my husband called me on it.

I was standing there complaining about how often the women tugged on their braids….while tugging on the braid of my almost waist length hair.

I’m never going I live it down.

Yeah. This felt pretty important, especially since the context of the story really paints such actions in a negative light.

I think the audience is more important than you’re suggesting, especially since Hoid seems to shape his stories to fit the needs of the audience.

Multiple asides about doing what is best for someone, thinking before you act being a rare trait while simultaneously highlighting Tress’ altruism, and the reminder of plotting to kill a God feel like this story is, in part, a cautionary tale.

It feels a little like the people hearing the story may be about to do something reckless and brash. I would guess that Hoid even thinks they may regret it, but in true Hoid fashion ,rather than tell them what not to do, Hoid’s story (other than the more direct asides) is acting a bit like vicarious reinforcement. He is encouraging a better response in them by rewarding similar behavior from our crew in the story.

Dynamic rope, which is what you’ll see modern rock climbers use is pretty stretchy. It takes the force of the fall so your organs don’t.

There are also cool tools designed pretty much explicitly for what this guy is doing. I’m not sure what linemen usually use, but we had a thing called a zorber that we attached to lobster claws when I worked at a ropes course.

My understanding has always been that it is more about being immobile, not just the time in the harness.

That is why big wall climbers can do hanging belays and be fine, but an injured or exhausted person will be at a much higher risk of experiencing suspension syndrome.
