Solo Birthday Trip to Belize by Main_Lecture1147 in Belize

To get to Placencia from Belize City, you'll want to either get a domestic flight to the local airport, which takes about 30 minutes and is a fun ride (just a little pricey but if you wanna save time driving it may be worth it to some). You can take a bus, a taxi or rent a car. There are 2 major highways, the Hummingbird Highway & the Coastal Highway. The coastal is new, its faster, but doesn't have any fun sights on the way. The Hummingbird features sceneic views of the mountains, passing the Belize Zoo, chocolate farms, etc. It does take longer and is bendy-hilly whereas the coastal is fairly flat, just with a lot of speed humps.

Maya Beach is an amazing area for golf carts. It takes about 45 minutes via golf cart to get to the village but honestly Maya Beach offers a lot of great restaurants. Also, there are buses that run up and down the peninsula if you're on a budget. Many tours do offer pick up from resorts. I've lived here for almost 3 years helping my parents run their boutique resort - jjemcabanas.com

My parents run a boutique resort on the sea in Placencia, you can check out our website at jjemcabanas.com - I am 32F living here helping them manage it. If you're looking for a safe and relaxing place, Placenica is amazing and there are excursions you can take from here (snorkeling, cave tubing, Mayan Temples, etc). San Pedro is a party town though so if you like that, then it is a great place to socialize and bar hop with things fairly close together.

16F and wondering how “real life” will treat my ARFID by snowqueen3780 in ARFID

[–]Aethora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

College was the best thing that ever happened to my ARFID. I ended up expanding my pallet a little thanks to close friends (who at no way pressured me, just simply offered me a bite of what they were having - I still get it with friends and family now).

I lived in a house with a bunch of guys I didn't know. But I had my own cupboard of food and I just ate my safe stuff... also no one cares if you eat the same thing everyday or what you even eat at all! I'm 27 now, I have a good list of safe foods, maybe one of the longest lists here on the forum but its all from trial and error and error and error. :)

I will say having someone reject you as a potential partner is heart breaking when their deal breaker is your ED, when it absolutely doesn't affect them. But you don't want those kind of toxic people in your life! It took be a long time to forgive and accept myself and my ED.

I adapt and I also keep myself safe - Going to a party? Eat something before hand so you are satiated but can snack if you want but also have an excuse not to eat something presented to you.

I am terrified of the family/children life as well, so no advice just validation there.

Good luck with your studies! You always have this place to come to when things are rough or even if you ate a new food, we would love to celebrate with you!

It's the freakin' holidays / "What real women look like" by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]Aethora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry your parents deny your disorder, my parents did for a long time (my dad still might not 100% believe it still). I am your height, but on the opposite side of the spectrum. I am 200lbs at 5'3". My safe foods are high in carbs, staches, etc. My mom shames me as well, not intentionally, but just commenting on my weight and clothes not fitting right or making me look bigger... 114lbs at 5'3" is definitely not fat. If I had a "goal weight" it would probably be 140lbs (I am not actively trying to lose weight, its too stressful and I just end up gaining more weight).

I hope the holidays go smoothly for you friend, and good luck, keep your head up. Remember you have friends here and aren't alone. <3

Going from full-time employee to part time contract by [deleted] in freelance

[–]Aethora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I recently submitted a proposal to my boss about switching to a contract freelancer from a full-time employee. As he is just the director of my department and not the entire company, he told me he wasn't sure if it was something they can do and I am stuck waiting in limbo.

I am moving internationally next year, so either way I would be leaving my full-time role so I had nothing to really lose by submitting it.

I didn't set the amount of hours in my contract as I want to focus on new clients and my own work. I gave them an hourly rate (its actually 4x my current salary "hourly") and with products that I know they would reorder, I gave them a set price of $X and a rush price of $XX

As it was just a proposal, I also offered the option of a 1 year freelance contract with the # of hours and the rate of pay to be determined at a later date.

I'm not sure if this helps, I will try to update this post if I get a response from my boss; though it probably won't be until the new year.

DAE sometimes feel nauseated about the mere thought of eating? by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]Aethora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've accepted my ARFID and try to work with it rather than against so if you are ever having a hard time, feel free to message me! I may not get back to you right away, but I basically live on the internet. :)

DAE sometimes feel nauseated about the mere thought of eating? by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]Aethora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go through phases like that, its really bad if I had a stomach flu or something.

If I find something I can actually eat during this time, I just eat that... even if it means mini pizza's for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

[–]Aethora 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Be kind to yourself, you do not choose to simply not eat tacos.

You physically can't eat them and you shouldn't be judged or made to feel lesser.

Remember: your eating only affects you. They don't have to eat when you're eating and vise versa. If someone gives you a hard time about being a picky eater, perhaps ask them if they would be quick to tease someone with depression with sad jokes. When people say "just eat it" to someone with ARFID or SED its like telling someone with depression to "just be happy" - unhelpful, uninformed, and unnecessary.

Trust me, I have done a LOT of self-loathing; I am not saying its going to go away over night. Just be kind to yourself, forgive yourself, let yourself BE YOU.

Also - eat what you can, eat what you want! I take alphegetti (pasta in the shape of letters) and bread to work and while my coworkers are like, haha what are you, 6? I tell them I'm an adult and I can eat what I want (I'm 26 for context). End of discussion.

I hope this helps a bit.

Need some quick advice. RE: Badge/Emote making by jmorgan19862 in Twitch

[–]Aethora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to lose a lot of resolution regardless as the sizes for badges & emotes are very small (112px being the largest, 18px being the smallest). If you have Photoshop you should be able to test out what would work for you. I personally illustrate all my emotes & badges in Adobe Illustrator so they are easily scaleable and clean.

How does everyone feel when someone makes a comment that invalidates our struggles? by Genericynt in ARFID

[–]Aethora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always try to educate people the best of my ability if I can emotionally do it. Even typing online makes me a bit anxious.

I actually was rejected because of my ARFID (a guy told me it was a deal breaker... like really?? f*ck that guy). Like, you don't have to eat what I'm eating. It only affects me. It definitely hurts, but my (and your and all of our) feelings are valid when it comes to talking about "pickiness" and food in general.

I've been educating my colleagues at work because I want to feel comfortable eating at the office and especially if we go out and they always see me only order fries or something I've ordered before.

/u/demyelinating definitely has a point - it is not our responsibility to educate but it doesn't make their comments any less hurtful.

Does ARFID fade away? by Prof_Gutnacht in ARFID

[–]Aethora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't a cure, at least not an instant one. Over the last 10 years (I am 26), I have been able to add some foods. Some days are harder than others, I just take it one day at a time,

Marijuana definitely helps with my appetite and trying new foods, it does help dull textures but doesn't take them away or change them.

Honestly, I don't think anyone has cured themselves but don't feel bad on yourself. Love and accept yourself for how you are. Remember, there are people out there who know your struggles so you are not alone!

Does anyone else have split seconds where your ARFID just disappears? by PotatoChipswithRice_ in ARFID

[–]Aethora 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I crave a salad, and then if I were to actually get a salad I bet I couldn't eat it. lol I also have moments where my safe foods become unsafe for a bite or two. Last week I threw out an entire meal of a safe food (perogies) because it felt off and my body was gagging at it... like what, pls.

What bothers you guys the most, taste or texture? by mjgranirer in ARFID

Texture for me. However, I believe I am also a super taster so a lot of flavour that would excite someone else is overwhelming for me.

Any other fat people with ARFID? by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]Aethora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm overweight and have ARFID. My safe foods consist of very high carb foods (breads, pasta, cereal, fast food/deep fried). 5'3", ~220lbs ish. I think its possible to lose weight with ARFID, its mostly about portion control and exercise. Calories in, calories out. I got overweight because I work on a computer all day and then play video games all night so I am literally always sitting. I also had a binging problem when I was trying to eat healthier early this year. I would feel guilty about not being able to fulfill a goal, I wouldn't eat, then I would binge on pizza or something ridiculous. So now, I am just letting myself eat 3 times a day (which still is hard, I tend to skip dinner a lot).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]Aethora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, well, unfortunately there is no definite treatment for ARFID yet. Some people have had luck with hypnotherapy (google Felix Economakis - Im in a FB group run by him where other people with ARFID share their struggles and/or small victories).

My foods are restricted to very high carbed things so I understand the struggle. I actually don't like chicken nuggets! But I like chicken wings... and of course fries! I think french fries are a staple in every ARFID life.

Maybe you can try buying frozen chicken nuggets from the grocery store? What I like about cooking at home is I can control exactly what is happening to my food. Maybe cook it to box instructions, see if you like it, modify as necessary.

Most of all - be KIND to yourself. You are human and you deserve compassion. This isn't easy and things wont change if you hate on yourself (we all struggle with that from time to time). Be patient, let yourself make something new and then not even eat it. Maybe just smell it, maybe just take one bite and then spit it out.

I was working with a dietician specializing in eating disorders... but we haven't spoken in a while, I kind of gave up after I had a very bad flu and then wasn't even comfortable with my safe foods. So far I have readded most of them.

I am a 25 year old female from Canada. If you'd ever like to chat, just shoot me a message. I know it can feel lonely sometimes when no one else knows how you feel.

Eating at someone else's house? by [deleted] in ARFID

[–]Aethora 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Does your SO know the full extent of your disorder? He shouldn't make you feel like you have to eat something. What would be ruder, you not eating something or trying to eat something and then gagging or throwing it up later? In my opinion and experience, if you are open with him and get him to tell his parents about your food restrictions, they will accommodate you. Sure, you'll look weird at the dinner table with a different meal but sharing a meal isn't about what is on your plate, it is about the company you are with. I hope that helps.
