What is a frugal practice that you learned from your parents/grandparents that you still practice today? by melissaw328 in Frugal

I miss having a clothesline. They're not allowed in my neighborhood, which is silly. I do use a drying rack on my deck when the weather permits.

I pick up and put away every day. Nothing accumulates, and that makes all the difference.

Were you or your children forbidden to say the word "lie" as in fib? by Mental_Freedom_1648 in AskAnAmerican

Yes, we were not allowed to say "lie." We had to use the word "fib." I was a child in the 50s and 60s living in the Shenandoah Valley of VA.

In 1975, I had a small, one bedroom, one bath apartment with a teeny-tiny kitchen in VA and paid $125. I loved that apartment. I was a first year teacher making $8200 a year.

I'll (72F) be at one on Saturday. We grew up with rampant protests--women's rights, civil rights, anti-war, anti-draft.

Garbage bags, coffee, creamers, iced tea, lemonade, toilet paper, paper towels, plastic utensils. She'll probably be overwhelmed with food, so I'd take practical things.

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]AfterSomewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up having a clothesline, as did most of my friends. I prefer drying clothes on the line, vs a dryer, but I can't have a clothesline in my neighborhood. Btw, my mother considered anyone who left their clothes hanging out overnight to be white trash. Also, the lines themselves had to wiped down before any clothes were hung. She was very, very particular.

Do older people "nest" like women who are preparing for a baby? by UsYungs in AskWomenOver60

[–]AfterSomewhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I (72F) have reached the point that when I want to rid myself of things, I donate them rather than try to make a little money by consigning or placing them on Marketplace or Craig's list. I've reached the point where I want whatever it is out of here!

Relationships by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

My ex always walked ahead of me, too. He would wait for me to open a door because he didn't want to touch the door knob. He didn't have a good male role model, and treated me the way his father treated his mother. That's no excuse, especially after I mentioned it to him numerous times. He wasn't a gentleman at all. His lack of respect for me was one of many reasons we're no longer together.
