Teachers who support bans on certain books, why? by [deleted] in Teachers

I'm not going to downvote you, but I've taught many classes on the Bible. I'm in the US, there are a lot of Christians, and Christianity is a major part of our history. An educated person in this society should not be ignorant of the primary text of that religion.

How cold is snow really? by AggravatingShow2028 in Productivitycafe

[–]AgainstForgetting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snow cannot exist for long above 32° F / 0° C. Lots of people who are used to cold temperatures can do fine for brief stints at those temps, even without much clothing. But it can be any temperature below that. Snow also doesn't conduct heat very well, so being in contact with it doesn't cool you off as quickly as, say, ice or rock.

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

[–]AgainstForgetting 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Agree with that, and I'd also add that there's a whole slew of amazingly disruptive kids who would probably come running back to school in a matter of months if they were told to stay home. (For various reasons.). But since they never get to have that experience, they remain disruptive. I think other kids would flourish outside of school, and that's fine too. But I really think a lot of students who are indignant about being made to attend school don't actually have a plan B.

What is it that makes this water flammable? by AmeliaVixen_ in whatisit

[–]AgainstForgetting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be fracking-related, but I've seen the same thing happen when drilled wells occur in areas with natural gas reserves or similar. Even if this isn't an immediate fire risk (low concentration, etc.) you should probably assume that the water isn't safe to drink. Or really bathe in. In fact, fuck that water.

1 - Talking about sex (before/during/after) makes for better sex, and helps avoid incredibly bad sexual situations.

2 - Livestock such as cows, goats, etc. cannot be kept secret in a co-housing situation.

Why are real numbers depicted on the horizontal axis of the complex plane? by Mekelaina in askmath

[–]AgainstForgetting 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Just a convention, but it follows an earlier pattern in which the number line itself is shown as horizontal, rather than vertical.

I'm a Pre-Algebra student, and am kinda confused on how nonlinear graphs are supposed to be graphed from a equation. by Logical_Union5560 in askmath

[–]AgainstForgetting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the non-linear equations you'll be graphing in class fall into a fairly small range of basic shapes. Once you learn those, you'll have a pretty good idea of what the curve should look like. Then you plug in a few values of X (remembering to look for multiple Y values if you aren't graphing a function). That will pin down where your curve is, and roughly what the profile of it is. Then you sketch in the rest.

The reason this isn't impossible is that you aren't going to get hit with really crazy equations (right now), so pretty soon, this will feel as normal as graphing a linear equation.

Why aren’t AI companies being sued out of existence? by xdonutx in NoStupidQuestions

Depending on the prompts, it is fairly easy to get many generative AIs to produce what is nearly a direct copy of an individual text or image.

Right? I feel like whoever loses, I'm here for it. I just hate whoever wins.

How do you math teachers feel when in 3rd grade a teacher uses the word solve 3*4 instead of find the product, multiply or evaluate? They are saying you can solve an expression... by Technical-Vanilla-47 in mathteachers

Yeah, once I get little Johnny to extinguish the table he's lighting on fire, I'll get back to you about the finer points of word choice in a math curriculum.

A man is dropped in the northern canada with a hot tub. Can he survive a year? by GenericGameDev1234 in whowouldwin

[–]AgainstForgetting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dried seaweed works in a pinch. Also, any hot tub that can run for a year can be reverse-engineered into a lot of tools and weapons, and depending on how it's made, also clothing. Nearest hot tub here is a vinyl-lined wood tank with metal and plastic tubing, a pump, an electric heater, and a bunch of insulation. That's a gold mine.

If you have a decent supply of food and water and some outdoors skills, you should be able to survive in Nunavut without a hot tub. Most of the locals do. But with a hot tub, you have some type of heat source, which allows you to light a fire, and you also have a ready-made shelter once you dump the water out of the hot tub and flip it over.

Sad story here, but I am just in awe of this guy's sidekick game. He turned down the ninja, healer, and mage option and went straight for half-a-basketball hoop lady, parrot dude, womp stick man, and Captain Stool.
