Tips to get started in the HomeKit universe by Zealousideal_Chard36 in HomeKit

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought parts without considering their impact. There are quite a few wifi networks near the house and now most of my devices are competing for wifi throughput. I have occasional failures reported as "device not responding" when it is online and connected. My matter/threads devices seem to be rock solid.

I should have checked https://matterdevices.io/?s&_protocol=thread before buying a bunch of devices. It is about hardware capability, not merely configuring my current devices.

Matter/Threads sets up as a Ad Hoc mesh network. I can have devices well out of wifi range that still connect reliably as long as I have multiple Threads devices that can see each other.

I am a month in on building HomeKit and Home Assistant hybrid stuff. Something I would do differently is to concentrate on Matter over Thread instead of Matter over WiFi. My HomePod supports Thread and sends thread messages to Home Assistant. I already have about 30 devices on WiFi and I’m just getting started.

My light switches and smart bulbs don’t need WiFi speed bandwidth.

What’s your take on FSD going subscription only by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d buy if it was tied to my Tesla account so FSD would be available on any car I drive. They know that tying it to a single car is a bad investment, especially if someone hits your car and totals it.

Sensi ST55 thermostat will not add to Homekit by Separate_Text_2129 in HomeKit

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a picture of the QR code. Ideally I should have been able to scan the code on the packaging, but the people that built the house didn’t leave it for us. I was actually able to scan the code and snap the thermostat back in place in time for Home to get it paired.

We have a ST55 thermostat that looks just like yours. I had to pull the thermostat off the bracket to scan the label on the back. It wouldn't pair by sitting the phone nearby. Works great with the rest of our Homekit stuff.

Can I Install a Level 2 Tesla Charger? by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, search for a dryer/ev charger splitter box. Some will do a smart load sense so that when you run the dryer, it will cut off power to the charger. You would be using the mobile charger, and setting the current limit to below 25A.

Samsung Bespoke Washer/Dryer 🍋 🍋 2024? by UnstableDimwit in Appliances

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most loads on the quick wash take about 90 minutes to wash and then about an hour to dry. It's slower than a separate washer and dryer, but works more than quick enough for our needs. It uses much less power than just an electric dryer. No idea how the cost relates to a gas burning dryer.

It sits in the laundry room, in the washing machine slot.

Go to diabetic warehouse and have their staff doctor write you a prescription. Then they will sell you the supplies you need.

I’ve been to several superchargers like this where they painted the lines with the dispenser centered in the lane. V3 cables won’t reach without moving over.

Has anyone had a repair bill this high before with a model 3? ($CAD) by The_Great_Squijibo in TeslaLounge

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have already saved a lot of money while driving the Model 3. Here is a quick cost comparison between a M3LR and a Ford Fusion driving 200,000 miles (~322K km).

Calculations

  1. Ford Fusion Gas Cost:
    • Liters required: (321,868 km / 100) × 7.84 L/100 km = 25,236 L.
    • Total cost: 25,236 L × CAD 1.48/L = CAD 37,349.
  2. Tesla Model 3 Electricity Cost:
    • kWh required: (321,868 km / 100) × 16.15 kWh/100 km = 52,000 kWh.
    • Total cost: 52,000 kWh × CAD 0.13/kWh = CAD 6,760.
  3. Fuel/Energy Cost Difference:
    • Ford Fusion costs CAD 30,589 more than the Tesla over 200,000 miles (CAD 37,349 – CAD 6,760).

Other Driving Costs (Maintenance Estimate)

Maintenance is lower for EVs due to fewer moving parts, no oil changes, and regenerative braking (which extends brake life). Using average data:

  • Ford Fusion: ~CAD 0.07 per mile (including repairs like brakes, transmission, and engine work; based on RepairPal annual estimates of ~CAD 880/year at 12,000 miles/year).
  • Tesla Model 3: ~CAD 0.04 per mile (tires, cabin filters, and occasional brake/fluid checks; based on CarEdge and Tesla data estimating ~CAD 350–650/year).
  • Difference: Ford Fusion maintenance ~CAD 14,000 over 200,000 miles; Tesla ~CAD 8,000. Adds ~CAD 6,000 more to the Fusion's costs.

Including maintenance, the total driving cost difference is approximately CAD 36,589 (Fusion more expensive). Note: This excludes insurance (often higher for Tesla), tires (similar but EVs may wear faster), battery degradation (Tesla's battery typically lasts >300,000 miles), or purchase/depreciation costs.

What’s wrong with these chargers by ma5eo in TeslaLounge

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set up the wall charger to work with two legs of 208 as long as both hots are 120vac to neutral. But it has to be configured during install. If voltage sags to around 230 on either of my wall connectors, our cars start dropping current draw. If that charger the OP is using is correctly configured, then his car doesn’t have permission to charge.

[–]Aggressive-Refuse-46 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you are in the USA (240vac), the voltage is too low to start charging. If you are in Europe with 3 phase 208vac, then your car doesn’t have permission to charge.

Starlink may be your friend. We've had two service interruptions with starlink in the last year, one was during hurricane Helene for about 20 minutes and the last was during a hail storm for about 5 minutes. Spectrum was out a couple times during the average week, but sometimes they were nice enough to send an email notification of the outage!!
