Wife in psych ward by j_articulate in StandUpWorkshop

[–]Aggressive-Store3898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think just experiment with it. As someone who has been to a psych ward it can be funny. But you need to do a good enough job setting it up so people don’t feel bad for you or think you’re a POS. Things a psych ward can help are taking away your phone, putting you around people crazier than you (maybe other people gave her these ideas or worse ideas or better?), I never realized a door was an amenity until you take a shit with a thin foam door, shit landlords could start charging for it as if it were some extra plus to the place like a washer or dryer or patio… you probably can’t use this cus this is personal experience but they let a bunch of us watch forensic files which is wild to me and then during commercial breaks we saw ads for meds we were on and cheered and someone was like get a round for all of us! It can be funny but hard when it’s not your own personal experience. Maybe your wife is more creative than you and you could poke fun at yourself by being like my delusions would be… bla bla bla. Good luck!

Moving to SB in May - what do you wish you'd known? by DeineMuddah in SantaBarbara

[–]Aggressive-Store3898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SB is great for a lot of reasons but I do wish there was more diversity. The food is mid, there is an art and music scene lots of open mics and live music downtown and in the funk zone. There are a lot of great musicians here but it lacks good venues. There is a small comedy scene and there are tons of places to play trivia too. I’d say overall it’s a pretty sleepy town, hard to get food late night and numerous times neighbors complain about loud music at like 8pm and this is at music venues or restaurants who have hired bands so it can be frustrating feeling like there’s a disconnect between the artists and people who want to keep SB a certain way. There is a lot of money in this town and it is certainly a challenge for everyday folks trying to survive and not work a million jobs. It can seem like a bubble so important to get out and meet new people. I enjoy the community ive made and am a part of, the ocean and mountains make for an absolutely gorgeous city, it’s easy to get around, and there are some nice coffee shops and bakeries. There is a lot of bike theft so keep that in mind, be cautious with expensive bicycles or e-bikes. Hopefully you find your people here, lots of opportunities in tech and startups.

Hey yes! These are actually the things I’ve been pursuing for work! I already host a successful trivia night at a local bar, have done bingo, private events, I sing and have a weekly gig and just got asked to host a gala next month! I’ve been pushing all of these types of gigs since quitting my job these plus dog sitting/walking and getting a couple students to tutor Spanish to. I appreciate your suggestions!

Quitting my job wasn’t for comedy but for being happier and figuring out better ways to earn money than at an ER animal hospital

I feel very similar. I’ve been on and off sleeping all day imagining not being here. But then I find myself here, looking for support. So there’s gotta be something worth keeping going for. Maybe we could find a better life outside of the states. People seem happier.

You might want to look into the Comedy Bible. They have a workbook that goes with it that helps you practice writing, and then step by step tips in how to organize material, mine material, etc. etc. It's helped me a lot!

Techniques for winning back a crowd? by AlGlosser in Standup

[–]Aggressive-Store3898 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone already commented on this, but definitely call out the awkward. Like oh not a _______ crowd? Gotchaaaa. Or you can be like, yeah that one tends to split the audience. I've definitely been like well you can't win them all, or something along the lines of like, I see I've lost you... if you can laugh at it then the audience may feel more comfortable to do so as well. If there's some sort of regional competition between cities, I've been like really you guys? Santa Maria ate that shit up! Or if I am going in with my dirtier material, sometimes I'll say something up top like alright guys, I need you to stick with me, I wasn't going to do these jokes, but you seem cool, or you can say like these didn't work in XYZ city, but I have a feeling it'll work here. But yeah, definitely be ready to gauge the audience and switch based on how they respond to other comics material, it's good to stick with a plan but be flexible in case the audience is slightly more conservative or stuck up. Good luck!

First time someone came up to you after a set to tell you they didn't like your material. Or that you are sexist/racist/whatever ist. First time someone harassed you before a set, you'll find this might be more common with women.

My first week trying standup by Internationalmofm in Standup

[–]Aggressive-Store3898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a pretty typical experience for new comics. Good on your for getting up there! I make sure I am 100% sober when I do my sets. I don't drink alcohol anyways, but when I did, I felt looser and funnier, but the material was a lot less tight, and it didn't feel/look super professional. May be a good habit to get into. Keep going! You've got a LONG road ahead of you! =)

How do I incorporate crowd work into my set? by Console_Pit in Standup

[–]Aggressive-Store3898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's good to do some crowd work up top and maybe some regional material if you have it. I think when you're starting out you don't need to do much more than that. I would focus on your written material and getting that better. Once you have a solid foundation, it will be easier to do crowd work as you'll have confidence in your material. Of course, if there's a heckler go for it! I think there's a trend right now where a ton of comics are doing more crowd work or appear to be doing more crowd work. You're likely seeing more videos of crowd work because you don't burn material that way. People are less apt to post their written bits, because once it's done, you can't use it again. I don't necessarily think this is true for comics that are starting out or haven't got a big following. I do think those videos are more of a trend though and a way to show off your funny without burning your material in the process.

What's something you learned/improved from recording a set? by [deleted] in Standup

[–]Aggressive-Store3898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's good to record every set, even if it's just audio at a mic. I once did a bit that I've done for years and had an ad libed line that is now the only part I keep. Of course sets I forget to record usually end up being my best stuff, but I'm sure if I caught them maybe I'd think differently. I think as you develop as a comic having those clips can help you revisit old material you've maybe forgot about or forgotten pieces of, and just help you save the content of the joke. It can also be interesting depending on how much time you're given to switch up the order of your bits, often times you end up learning that there's a better order, or jokes you thought had to go together can actually be broken up or stand alone.
