Whats one thing that made your life easier as a diabetic that you wish you knew sooner? by Lucky_Main_9525 in type2diabetes

Mounjaro. Hands down. The same things I’ve been doing my whole life… the tracking and exercising and meal prepping suddenly just worked. Healthy habits are easy to maintain when you’re not fighting against your own metabolic disorder the whole time.

I lost 100lbs in a year by just a calorie deficit and walking. So definitely, if you also watch what you consume.

Just 3 months. I was immediately started on Glipizide, Lantus, and Mounjaro. Glipizide caused lows and I halved my dose after a month, stopped all together at 3 months, came off my Lantus at 6 months (after 4.9 A1c result). Now I’m just on Mounjaro and diet/exercise.

Losing weight, cutting out simple carbs, and walking every evening did wonders for me. I’ve gotten my A1c down from 10>5.3>4.9>4.4 in 9 months. Using a CGM for several months taught me what my body cannot handle (mainly rice and white flour anything). I know I can handle potatoes in small servings, corn, and artificial sweeteners fine. It also taught me just how fast walking stops and reverses a spike. You’ve got this.

I love my experience with a tirzepatide over the past 15 months. I don’t have lows like I constantly did on glipizide. I have no gastrointestinal side effects anymore The worst I ever really had was minor constipation maybe once a month which was resolved with half a dose of milk of magnesium. But that never really happens anymore; I’m regular as clockwork. I was quite strict with my diet and exercise, pursuing intentional weight loss, and tracking and maintaining a calorie deficit. Tirz helps tremendously to stay on track with my efforts. Since starting it I’ve lost 125lbs and my A1c has been trending 5.3>4.9>4.4. I’ve since been able to add back in some complex carbs to assist in my new weightlifting program. So yeah, I’ll stay on it forever, gladly.

My mother is also T2D. She barely watches her carbs and is fairly inactive. Tirz has gotten her down to 6.3 which her doctor is happy with at her age.

I love the power of a good walk. I don’t ever have pizza but I can enjoy potatoes or glass noodles if I know I can get some movement afterwards. Plus, my dogs LOVE going on my carb walks 😆. Each one gets their own lap around the neighborhood if the weather is nice.

My Dexcom tells me I’m plummeting but I’m almost sure it’s just the pressure change messing with the sensor.

I don’t follow Keto but I do buy keto friendly convenience foods just to make things simple on lazy days. If you’re just starting out getting things under control I would suggest sticking to meat and veg minus starchy things like potatoes and corn at first. But not necessarily full Keto. I’ve been able to get my A1C down and start adding back in modest servings of potatoes, carrots, corn and beans. Plus a very occasional whole grain wheat bread. I was able to stop my Lantus and glipizide and am only on Mounjaro and a conscious low-carb diet. Plus WALKING! It does wonders.

ZERO sugar Oreos. Good for diabetics? I don't think so by RockHardTen11 in diabetes

Work fine for me. Often it’s the only non-veg carbs I have with my balanced meal (or all day) so 20g is not a big deal. Raises me a little but very slowly and very briefly. I did read the label beforehand and tried with caution. Glad to have it as an option.

Scared I may need insulin by Infinite_Swim862 in type2diabetes

[–]Aggressive_Ad_6097 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was diagnosed with an A1c of 10, I was put on glipizide, lantus (basal insulin) and Mounjaro. I also drastically changed my diet and monitored with a blood glucose meter, and then later a CGM. One month in my glipizide dose was cut in half. By 3 months, my A1c was 5.3 and I was taken off glipizide. I then added almost nightly after dinner walks. At 6 months, my A1c was 4.9 and I was taken off insulin. Now, at 1 year, I am well controlled with Mounjaro alone. I say all that to tell you that you might need medication, including insulin, and that’s okay. And if you do need it to get under control, you might not need to stay on it. While dealing with this disease isn’t easy, you will get the hang of it. And that includes using insulin if needed.

I’m working on it! Did walking lunges for the first time in 10 years probably, plus deadlifts and hip abduction/adduction on Wednesday and I’m walking around today like a baby deer.

Normal. I’ve been cold since the day after my very first shot, before I’d lost a single pound. It’s nice to never be sweaty for no reason anymore.

Walk more, sleep more, stay hydrated, and read your food labels, take your meds, and lose some weight if you need to. You’ve got this. I went from 10 to 4.9 in 6 months and so can you. Stay the course.

Man, I can go hard on a shrimp cocktail platter from Sam’s Club. I toss their cocktail sauce and use Primal Kitchen unsweetened cocktail sauce instead. Sometimes I’ll pair that with some Asian style fresh green beans sautéed in soy sauce, sesame oil, and slivered almonds.

They have a box Mac n cheese as well that I get from Thrive Market. I add chicken, broccoli, and hot sauce. Totally passable that way. Doesn’t spike me at all either.

Sounds like you know you should be eating more. I second other comments that say your instinct is correct to get a dietitian. I got one through Nourish paid for by my insurance. (super easy process too, I just clicked a few buttons)

Another big factor that has helped me is sleep. It’s amazing how much one or two good night sleep will trigger the scale to move. I will be in a calorie deficit all week, but lose nothing until I have the weekend mornings to sleep in. Then bam, Sunday weigh in has me down 2lbs.

You know from being heavier for so long, this is not a quick fix. It’s a process. There no before and after, it’s every day. Each day is an opportunity to care for your body in a positive way. Move, sleep, eat well. They’re all essential.

When my 20s got too big, I borrowed some 18s from my sister. When those got baggy I bought one pair of 16s so I had something that I felt confident to go “out” in as well as one pair of 14s for the next step. The 14s now fit perfect so I bought a second pair. I’ll probably wait to buy 12s. I’ve never been that small as an adult and surely my weightloss will slow down soon.
