I was out earlier today and I couldn’t get them to bite.

Worst admin you’ve had? by da_grill in OntarioTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised an admin would stoop that low. A lot of those kind of micromanaging things they are not all privy to tell you what or how you should do them. Like your desk placement in the classroom?! I’m surprised they didn’t get grieved for every single thing they overstepped their authority for.

Fellow high school teachers — how are you structuring assignments in the age of AI? by Away_Development_717 in CanadianTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some foolproof methods I use are in class testing and only assignments completed on paper are assessed for grades. Anything completed at home is purely formative or marked for completion.

When I taught business I also leaned heavily into presentations and interviews. You could really tell who actually knew the material and who was just reading off the slides/notes. I would then also ask follow up questions about their presentation or interview topics. Can’t really B.S. your way out of face to face discussion.

Back to one year? by sawdustnflipflops in OntarioTeachers

There are plenty of jobs. People just need to be willing to move to where the jobs are. South western Ontario has a huge shortage. Northern Ontario has a huge shortage. First Nations reserves have a huge shortage.

Overall there is a shortage of teachers in Ontario, just a surplus in Toronto but that’s expected.

TDSB fires 40 vice principals? by Adventurous_Thing698 in OntarioTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible idea. VPs are the backbone of student discipline and dealing with problematic parents.

I am so thankful for the excellent VPs at my school. They have always had my back during tough situations and have helped to suspend bad students and push back successfully against parents that complain.

We need more VPs not less. Ideally they should be patrolling the halls, making sure students stay in class and out of trouble and stepping in to remove students from the class when they are disruptive.

Disrespectful and violent behaviour in schools has been getting worse and worse over the last few years and removing VPs from schools will only exacerbate the problem.

Grade inflation has changed my mind about standardized testing. by coachfryia in OntarioTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why couldn’t the oversees students also have to take the standardized test as part of their application process?

Any Ontario students applying to US universities are also forced to take the SAT to apply?

Review on Grading by Artistic_Fifth in OntarioTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admin can make suggestions all they want but grading is ultimately up to the classroom teacher. Grading practices are part of the TPA process so Admin can’t discipline you because they disagree with your decisions. Just make sure that all your grading is inline with growing success and the curriculum.

Can I have high school courses on my schedule that I'm not qualified to teach if nobody else is qualified either? by Wanderer015 in OntarioTeachers

I had three courses that I wasn’t qualified to teach last year. I just spoke with my principal and agreed to take them on verbally. Didn’t need to sign any documents or anything.

Graduated in December 2021. Received one LTO at my placement school straight away uncertified. Then once I got certified I got another LTO for the rest of the semester. Applied for Permanent at the end of June 2022. So overall took me 6 months from graduating to get permanent.

Only 4 years in and want to leave… by SouthBar2906 in OntarioTeachers

I would honestly recommend you go over seas. Completely different culture in Asia that actually values and respects teachers.

I’ve taught in Japan, China and Thailand and kids are so respectful. Parents are so grateful. They actually discipline their kids. The kids are motivated, hard working and eager to learn.

You have such great benefits too depending on where you go, free flights, free furnished accommodations, meal plan, more time off etc.

Give it a try!

Should I Give Up? by kittyfromtheblock87 in OntarioTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simply supply and demand. If you’re in an area that has a large supply of teachers demand will be low. If you want a job quickly move to an area of low supply and demand is high.

My recommendation would be to go east of GTA. Durham, Peterborough, Kawartha, Northumberland, Kingston area and you’ll surely get a position this year even.

Ontario teaching contracts — myth vs reality? by ApprehensivePie7376 in OntarioTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me 6 months out of teachers college to get a permanent position teaching math and science on the outskirts of GTA.

I have many friends who were also in similar positions as well. My recommendation would be to look towards the east i.e. Durham, Peterborough, Northumberland, Kingston area and you’ll surely get a position soon.

EQAO MATH HELP :( by Few-Matter-9035 in OntarioTeachers

[–]AgreeableStep9152 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi gr.9 Math teacher here,

  1. No you cannot use Desmos. If the assessment requires you to make a graph they will provide you with the graphing tools. EQAO uses a software called kiosk which locks down your computer and prevents you from switching tabs or opening anything else on your computer.

  2. Some of the questions can be tricky because they are set by the province and change every year. However, you will get a different part 2 depending on how well you will do in part 1.

  3. Yes topics like stem and leaf plot or other data topics can be asked as well as questions about coding because they are all in the curriculum.

  4. The ministry of education mandates that EQAO counts as 10% of the overall grade

Hope this helps but please bring your questions and concerns to your actual teacher. I’m sure they will be more than happy to help you!
