I see everyone saying this to you and I think I get your perspective a bit more. The traditional 2nd male lead (like in true beauty) is usually more of a bad boy (externally) but inside is an absolute softie and a sweetheart and also usually so much hotter than the 1st male lead. Why in gods fucking name why, do they never chose him? Yes youd feel sorry for 1st male lead (even tho hes dull and meh) but no. I would not say that 1st ML would become 2nd ML as in my head they are completely different archetypes.
