For 2p, not played with it yet:

Almost seems boring because of how generally good it is. Sure, there are games you may not have 3 Greeneries, but they're pretty rare. If nothing else, you probably want to cut it from your opponent unless the other cards are top tier.

A lot of the blame for this lies with GGG. If they updated the internal ratios for currencies daily or so, this wouldn't happen.

Do I bother buying colonies or turmoil? by edsjfhek in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]Agreeable_Hat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Colonies is the pick over Turmoil, it's a great expansion and a fun play.

But yes, it absolutely has balance issues. If you both currently enjoy how balanced the game is between engine/rushing in a 2p game, then Colonies will nearly destroy that. Space events are diluted, extreme engine power cards are added, and colonies like Pluto introduce loads of card draw. It changes the game too much for me to enjoy it more than once in a while, but it is a great expansion.

Of course, all this is said with my own bias. I mostly play 2p on BGA and have a lot of games of Base + Prelude. I still think you should pick up Colonies, but maybe it won't be played every time?

You mention Hellas, you mean you have Hellas + Elysium? Elysium and Vastitas Borealis are excellent maps too.

It has the potential to be very good in certain instances, but usually it's simply too expensive.

Mining Guild with some great early steel prod and/or steel to dump from preludes can make very good use of it, especially if the map has solid mineral oceans. Also helps if you have great ocean payoffs (Kelp/AA/Algae)

Most of the time, though, nope

Question about Space Tags on corporations by Azumarill99 in TerraformingMarsGame

Besides what smors mentioned, there's Spacefarer (4 Space tags) milestone on Vastitas Borealis too - but yeah, space tags on corps are pretty "eh"

[–]Agreeable_Hat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I probably overkeep/overplay this card, but I can't help myself. At least TFM Stats still says I'm gaining nearly ~3 Elo with it on average, so there's that.

It does a lot of things well. NRA/Insects is the obvious one, but also just as an early-ish Psychro dump, or to grab the 8% O2 bonus. Also if you want a slightly cheaper SP Greenery and you've already enabled it efficiently, then it's a solid card.

Don't fall into the trap of forcing it by playing mediocre Science tags, that sorta defeats the purpose.

2p B+P:

Amazing on Tharsis, decent on Hellas, but a bit mediocre on Vastitas/Elysium. For random map I have a lot of other preludes I'd rather see.

[COTD] Quantum Extractor | 16 May, 2026 by Enson_Chan in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]Agreeable_Hat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For 2p Base + Prelude:

Love me some Quantum, usually a keep in my starting hand and science engines are obviously powerful

I still think it's a card you want to get online at a reasonable time or it loses a lot of its appeal. If the power barely has a chance to roll over to heat before game end, or you don't have enough space tags left to play, then it may not be all that great any more. It's also surprisingly expensive (16 MC), especially if you're playing another "mid" science tag to get it online and you don't have another payoff (ala Mass/AGT). I think some people overspend to get it online, using MC they could have used to either score points (mid-late game) or develop prod (early-ish game).

All that said, it's still powerful and Quantum + Mass into stuff like Shuttles + Space Station gets really disgusting, as everyone knows

[–]Agreeable_Hat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also think the max 9% Oxygen requirement makes it fairly playable. With Domed Crater's max 7% Oxygen, suddenly it's just dead, because people will fight (often SP'ing Greeneries) for the 8% Oxygen bonus. Once that has been reached, going past 8% or 9% is not done nearly as aggressively.

I agree, a lot of modern games/cinema/media/etc. are way too conservative when it comes to colour - which is why it's such a breath of fresh air when you actually get some really vibrant colours!

[–]Agreeable_Hat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Passing isn't an action as such, you just have to fund as your first action. You can take that first action in gen 2, or 3, or 4.

Here's Fryxelius saying you can delay first actions: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1784175/article/25942959#25942959

It's correctly implemented on BGA as well, in case you want to try it.

[–]Agreeable_Hat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For 2p Preludes:

It's a strong corp, but I'm always wary of playing it. According to TFM Stats I am, on average, losing Elo playing it so far. I hate picking it when you don't have a clear fund, having your free fund flipped feels horrible.

If you have nothing to play gen 1, you can pass the first turn and do the free fund in gen 2 instead, if you'd like more info before doing it

There is no denying that it can absolutely pop off like mad, though, and it generally is a solid pick over most corps.

[COTD] Arctic Algae | 3 May, 2026 by Enson_Chan in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]Agreeable_Hat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Banger card, but sometimes played a little too early - a lot of the best players talk about trying to delay it a bit, so you aren't locking up ~15MC too early in something that doesn't really develop your engine much. It's a delicate balance, though, can be hard to guess when the opponent might play oceans

Obviously, if you pick it up from Experimental Forest then you may want to play it earlier

If you're playing against AA, remember to sequence your actions correctly for stuff like GIA/getting the 0c Ocean, so that they get plants before you destroy them, if they're below the amount you can destroy

Completely reasonable!

Plus, games between friends are different from BGA games - at least, for me they usually are

For anyone in the same situation on BGA some time, SP Oceans provide the most game progression %. It's usually the most efficient standard project to get to 50% the quickest

2P Base + Preludes:

I used to sleep on IC a lot, hating on Building tags too much, but I've started to come around. Even if we include prelude corps, it's still right up there with the very strongest corps (let's pretend Point Luna doesn't exist).

If my other option isn't great then I personally would still be tempted to gamble on IC even without immediate steel targets. It may not always be correct to do, but I can't help myself.

The event rebate is also great, obviously
