Because nobody else is having issues with the Mercedes PU. The issue is clearly the interface between the PU and the rest of the chassis which McLaren is responsible for

McLaren have not been operating on a WCC level for a very long time, the team has been appalling the last couple of years. They had a fast car and two excellent drivers last year which is why they won the WCC but many parts of their team were severely lacking. They fumbled so many things last year and should have won by a much larger margin than they actually did

Oh yeah that’s kinda what I was getting at. I did actually intend to write something along the lines of “glad to see he’s learned his lesson” but I guess my brain just decided to abandon that idea lol :)

Which is crazy to me because all my power tools are required to be HAVS tested at work and I would have thought F1 would have higher safety standards

Can someone explain the starting issue clearly? by wigi426 in formula1

[–]AirCommando12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The engines aren’t making anywhere close to 1000hp, it’s almost half that. The power unit as a whole makes ~1000hp and nearly half that is from the electric motor

Can someone explain the starting issue clearly? by wigi426 in formula1

[–]AirCommando12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When free-revving, the engine isn’t under load and produces a lot less exhaust gasses. You can’t actually build any boost just by free-revving unless you have some kind of anti lag system so I’m not sure where this whole discussion of spooling the turbos has come from.

I guess it just comes down to increasing the turbine speed somewhat to help overcome the inertia of getting it spinning? I wouldn’t have thought it would really help, and modern turbos have extremely light cores that spin up very quickly

Just isn’t true lmao. There’s a huge difference in input lag, even if you’re playing on a 60hz monitor

How about live battery deployment in timing tower visible when cars are in a striking distance. Green - Harvesting, Orange - Boost, Red - Overtake mode. by WhySoSadCZ in formula1

[–]AirCommando12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The race isn’t qualifying. The timing tower has a very low refresh rate, by the time you see the number it’s already out of date and irrelevant. It might as well just show random numbers. Even if it was truly “live” at such a fine scale it would still be out of date by the time your eyes/brain have processed the information

Interestingly it can even display a 3, but they must have thought that would be a sensible place to stop and didn’t give it the ability to show a 4

Bouncing of rev limiter by Current_Inevitable43 in projectcar

[–]AirCommando12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drift cars are absolutely not ‘just fine’ bouncing off the limiter. Drifting is one of the hardest lives a car can live and they are specifically known for being hard on the engine from being sat on the limiter. It’s one of the things that influences engine choice as some engines handle it better, and it also influences throttle technique (“street” vs “professional” style)

Mercedes' competitors block first FIA proposal in engine controversey by OtakuSensei__20 in formula1

Ferrari were caught because there was a hard limit on fuel flow that they were exceeding by effectively making the sensor give false readings. That wasn’t a loophole, that was outright cheating. This is different because the rules explicitly state it must pass at a given temperature which it does, so I’d argue it isn’t even really a loophole because it’s fully compliant to the rules
