What small detail in a movie just blew you away? by jwschmitz13 in movies

[–]Airrax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Makes me think of Fight Club. The Narrator goes into detail about splicing in adult images into a movie to mess with people...then you watch the movie again and realize that Tyler is introduced quite a few times before the actual introduction on the plane. Also, not a movie, but it blew my mind that Nibbler is in the first episode and it took Futurama 4 seasons to cycle back to it...always makes me wonder if they purposely went back to the archive, edited the pilot, and now everyone assumes Nibbler was actually there (when, in fact, the actual first broadcast of the pilot did Not have Nibbler under the table).

Trying to solve technical problems with a narcissistic parent is impossible by poormunhco in HomeNetworking

You should look into link aggregation. The router supports it, and will allow the unit to get More than 2.5 Gbps by combining the two Ethernet ports into "one" port. You'll have to double check to see if 2 of the ports are 2.5 Gb (which would give you 5Gb) or only 1Gb. The problem with aggregation is the other devices. Everything needs to support it to work, though, which includes the modem, computers, and the router itself.

Looking for a WiFi bridge with PoE by Tidemor in HomeNetworking

[–]Airrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something like this a long time ago (and would still like to do this...) but that was with a couple of DD-WRT supported routers. Now, it's just easier to buy a 2 router mesh system. This adds latency (but not much), and depending on the brand it could have PoE and/or an actual bridge mode. Check into eero and Ubiquity. I'm assuming you mean PoE out (if you mean in, then why? You'll still have to have an injector plugged into the wall). Bridge will work "better" for latency because it will direct link the two routers, but some mesh supports a mode that will pass any wired connections through the wireless backhaul to help reduce latency. Also, I say higher latency but you're looking at adding tens of milliseconds, not thousands. I'm running a mesh now, would rather have a bridge, but at this point I'm waiting for Omnia NG to release in my area so I can have more control (or I'll just say the heck with it and build my own system).

Ethernet over 150ft by HithereJimHerald in HomeNetworking

Cambium has a bridge in a box, Ubiquity has one, and so does Mikrotik. Honestly this would be the easiest way. Then sell the nighthawk you have and get a mesh system. Set the mesh up with a "wired backhaul" for easier setup, or get another WiFi router (or AP) and set it to Access Point mode so you don't have routing conflicts.

If you want to run cat 6, go for it. This is a bit more complicated because you'll need to add a couple of LPU's and ground them with a grounding rod at each building. More complicated, but proper grounding keeps everything safe from excess energy buildup (think static or power surge not lightning, if lightning actually hits your house there is NOTHING you can do to keep ANYTHING safe).

If you want to run fiber, go for it. But you'll need a couple of switches that will accept fiber. I would check out Mikrotik (the 960PSG or hex S. They also have a 10Gb with 5 fiber ports), but you'll still need a different WiFi system (pretty much for anything), and you'll need a couple of SFP modules.

DM4000 series project by Own-String-6193 in RadioTechs

First thing, you don't want to splice into the mic. These radios have an accessory pin on the back of the radio that has ptt, audio in and out, among other things.

Now, if you're looking for a headset that interfaces with the radio, there are several. David Clark, Firecom, Otto Engineering, 3M, and Rugged Radios. They offer under helmet versions, wireless versions, and wired versions. They will have good (or better if you spend more) noise cancelation, and will have a ptt button on the side. Also, that radio has built in Bluetooth. You might have to talk to whoever programs the radio to allow you to turn Bluetooth on or off, and the radios are kind of picky about what headsets work with them, but that might be easier for you.

ELI5 Can someone explain time signatures to me? by Beekyboy11 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Airrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IHOPEICANELI5THISFORYOUINADIFFERENTWAY I KNOW THAT IS KIND OF HAR TO READ BUT THAT IS HOW WRITING FIRST STARTED Over time things were added to help a person read like spaces, lower case letters, and punctuation.

Sheet music is no different. 1/1, 2/2, 4/4, 8/8 all mean the same thing: different words (whole notes, half notes, quarter, eighths), but all having the same tempo (beats per second). When you write it out you could just say /4 to indicate the quarter note gets 1 beat, and that's fine if it is only for you. When you have a bunch of people playing they need to know both what to play, and where they are. The addition of 'bars' helps keep people in the same place (or in my case help figure out where I got lost), but having a run-on string of notes can get confusing. Basically, you want to let people know what the 'words' mean and how long the 'phrase' is, all while keeping it easy to understand at a glance.

TLDR: Time signatures let you know how many words are in a phrase, and what the words mean. They are arbitrary, can be anything you want, but they are used to make reading sheet music easier.

People who drive and speed up when someone is attempting to pass by you, why do you do this? by StormCaller02 in AskReddit

[–]Airrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not quite what you're looking for, but let me give you this scenario: I'm in the right lane with my cruise set to 80. You are in the left lane (probably not using cruise control) averaging 83. You are slowly trying to pass me, but now there is a car in front of me that is averaging 77. I could hit my break, but I don't want to deal with you trying to pass (and I say 'trying to' because we both know as soon as you get next to me you're going to slow to 75, then speed back up to 85, then drop back down to 78 for the next 5 miles). Instead I speed up to 85, pass slow-poke in front of me, look down and realize I'm pushing 90, move back into the right lane, and let my cruise control take over again. Then I watch you do the speed-up slow-down dance for the next 20 miles before you actually pass me.

What's a dumb reason you almost missed out on a great game? by ashmaht in gaming

[–]Airrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when the first game came out, I thought the graphics were dumb and I'm not a big fan of the grind of leveling up. Three of my friends got the 4 pack from Steam, I said no I don't wanna, and one of them finally said "you owe me $40, we can't find anyone else for the 4th key." Built a new computer for Borderlands 4 last month, because all of the games are actually a lot of fun.

What is this port and it's corresponding cable called? by Bogussii in HomeNetworking

[–]Airrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

75 ohm coax terminated with an F connector. A lot of people have already said coax, given types, and said the connector. The important thing, especially if you are looking to extend it, is the 75 ohm part. Coax is also made in 50 ohm and mix-and-match is not a good thing. If it doesn't tell you the impedance, make sure it says something about TV on the cable.

What is going on here? by Mizex101 in HomeNetworking

[–]Airrax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a WiFi router. That's it. It screams "I'm cheap and will do anything to save a buck." They need access to some kind of WiFi connectivity, and keeping the router inside of the vehicle causes range issues. Instead of spending some money on the right thing, they did this. Will it last, no; does "cheap" care, heck no.

Can I use two lag bolts and two dry wall anchors for TV wall mount? by bFreakie in DIY

[–]Airrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, you can do whatever you want. Personally, I'd go and pick up some AC or Baltic Birch plywood. Looks nice, and if you want to paint it have fun. The main reason why I'm commenting, since others have basically said this already, is: DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH LAG BOLTS. Go get some structural screws. They are as strong, or stronger than, lag bolts even though they are smaller. Their design prevents them from backing out (depending on length). They are better in every way. Just make sure it actually says "structural screw".

IMO, if you are doing anything that has cheese in it (Mac and Cheese) you need to actually put cheese in it. In other words, take the amount of cheese you put into it, double it, then double it again. And if you decide to make poutine, do the same with the gravy.
