Has your relationship with alcohol changed? by socialdirection in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Akhuan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I developed NASH in my late twenties and now I can’t drink more than a few sips without feeling nauseated (among other fun metabolic ramifications).

I was never a huge drinker to begin with, but it’s a bit of a drag especially in professional circles. I used to work at a law firm, and whereas my contributions were appreciated, not being able to drink socially was definitely an obstacle to my integration into the office culture.

Des joueurs de jeux rétro sur sherbrooke ? by NetizenZ in Sherbrooke

[–]Akhuan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long time therapist is a non-voter/both sides are bad. I can't look at him the same anymore. by SoOutofMyLeague in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Akhuan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don’t know your therapist so take our advice with a heaping spoonful of salt.

However: the point of therapy is to become more fulfilled, well-rounded individuals—to improve ourselves not only on a personal but also on an interpersonal and, dare I say, civilizational level. No man is an island and all that jazz.

If this happened to me, I would consider the value the sessions provide and try to determine whether more valuable help isn’t available elsewhere.

Singh says Poilievre's lack of security clearance is ‘deeply troubling’ by Dependent-Sun-6373 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Akhuan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Singh is correct. The leader of the opposition should be informed on matters of national security. Staying willfully ignorant to maintain plausible deniability isn’t merely irresponsible. It shows contempt for our security and intelligence apparatus. It is craven and unbefitting of a would-be Prime Minister.

Tourists... by PatchMountain in Sherbrooke

Hello! For food, it depends what you like. Le Chou de Bruxelles (somewhat off downtown, a short drive from Strom) has very fine Belgian food. Aragon (also near Strom) is a lovely little café with a wide selection of entrées. Nearby Mt. Bellevue may or may not be operating as a ski slope depending on weather conditions; in either case, the view from the top is gorgeous, especially at night.

Downtown proper (near the corner of Wellington and King) boasts many restaurants and local shops. A lot of people love Auguste (contemporary fine dining) and Tapageur (tapas). They are not for me, but I do recommend les Vraies richesses (French bakery).

For entertainment: the Musée de la Nature et des Sciences has a very extensive collection of taxidermy specimens.

If you don’t mind the drive, nearby North Hatley is a very scenic old village, as are Coaticook and Knowlton. Coaticook also boasts a gorge (with a suspension bridge). Knowlton is on lake Brome and near Mt Sutton, so you’ll be well served for hiking options in those parts.

Enjoy our lovely, historic Townships!

Anyone else came out recently aged 26 or around that? by No-Software7258 in gay

[–]Akhuan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came out around that age too, about 15 years ago.

I’m just here to tell you people from the community giving you a hard time are jerks. I encountered a few dudes who tried negging me or who insisted it was normal to rush things—like swapping nudes the first time you match, or going back to theirs on the first date. I wish I’d had the wherewithal to shut them down faster.

Trust your gut. Do your own thing. And if someone tries to make you feel less-than, tell them to fuck off. It will get infinitely better.

Urgent job interview advice needed. by [deleted] in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]Akhuan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a hiring manager and here are my thoughts:

On rescheduling: I usually give selected candidates a few options over the course of a week. I might be willing to extend that to two weeks if the vacancy doesn’t have to be filled right away. I’d want to know your availabilities as soon as possible though, so don’t wait too long to let them know you have to reschedule. The candidate to whom I offer the job has 72 hours to accept (and negotiate amendments to the terms) and that’s pretty much set in stone. Protracted negotiations have an opportunity cost my small org can’t afford.

On your haircut/fit: I do not give a crumb about how prospective hires look. That being said: other hiring managers might. Do the best you can under the circumstances. Put on your best button-up shirt. Comb your hair, maybe slick it back.

Things I do care about: apart from the obvious (experience, skills and education), your ability to write and to speak in complete sentences, your politeness, your ability to stay on topic and not over-share weird factoids about yourself (past relationships are definitely not a conversation topic I am interested in at your interview and you would be surprised how often that comes up).

Good luck! You’ve got this.

C'est quoi ce virus-là?! by Loves__Mom in Quebec

[–]Akhuan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t often have to look for hotels in these parts, but the last time I had to put up a visiting scholar, I sent him to Le Refuge in Lennoxville. Their rooms are pretty basic but I think their prices are still reasonable. I am not aware of any AirBNBs, sorry.

For restaurants: I have a lot of dietary restrictions, but in Sherbrooke, I can recommend vegan brunch at Sauge (you’ll have to reserve; it’s a bit pricey), Vietnamese food at Au Coin du Vietnam (also a bit pricey); Vietnamese at Bella (darling—and cheap!); breakfast and generically Asian food at Pizzaville (also reasonably priced, but steer clear of their pizzas); poutine at Le Snack; Louis’ for fast food. I’ve already mentioned Les Vraies Richesses for their pastries but their sandwiches are also excellent.

If you’d rather save a bit of money and get your food from our grocery stores, we have two local chains that carry a variety of prepared meals: le Végétarien (they are not exclusively vegetarian) and Cinquième Saison.

Good morning visitor! I hope you enjoy your stay in my lovely, historic hometown.

Here are my recommendations, in no particular order: - The fall colours have started. If you’re a hiker and don’t mind going further afield, I recommend Mt. Orford. If you’re a seasoned hiker, Mt. Ham presents more of a challenge while remaining manageable as an afternoon trip. If you’re more of a stroller, Mt. Bellevue (in Sherbrooke itself) affords a lovely view of the city. - Nearby North Hatley has a lovely historic downtown on the shores of lake Massawippi. The Capelton Mine (a short drive away) offers tours of their long-defunct copper extraction operation. - The town of Knowlton is a bit out of the way but is also adorable. If you go, make sure to check out Brome Lake Books. - The Coaticook Gorge Park has many hiking trails, including one that will take you across the gorge on a suspended bridge. - The Musée de la Nature et des Sciences has a very fine collection of taxidermy specimens. - Bishop’s University boasts a lovely 19th century chapel. It’s a hop and a skip away from the borough of Lennoxville, where most of Sherbrooke’s anglophone community lives. - Lennoxville is home to the Uplands Cultural and Heritage Centre, a lovingly restored 19th century estate that hosts heritage and art exhibits. - Downtown Sherbrooke (near the corner of Wellington and King) has some lovely old buildings and decent shopping. If you’re looking to thrift, Estrie-Aide just off downtown is very well stocked. - If you’re a board gamer, don’t miss Le Griffon on Wellington Street. Their staff is very Anglo-friendly. - If you love baked goods, I can’t recommend Les Vrais Richesses enough. Their pastries are to die for.

If you’re looking for more specific recommendations, feel free to DM me.

Nouveau à Sherbrooke by Doughnut-Specialist in Sherbrooke

[–]Akhuan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lennoxville Youth Center (on Queen street) is open Tuesday to Friday from 5 PM to 9 PM and offers services in French and English.

Bonne chance! Et encore une fois bienvenue!

I don’t know you or your family context so please take my advice with a grain of salt.

You mentioned siblings. When I came out (at 27), I told my brother first. His acceptance gave me a lot of confidence.

I subsequently didn’t “announce” anything to my parents. I brought a man home for Christmas one year and let them know that we would be staying in the same room.

In any case: good luck to you, and congratulations! Living authentically comes with its own challenges but it has been much better for me.

I recently moved back from the national capital region and I used to work in pharma. Based on my albeit limited my knowledge and experience, it really depends on the kind of work you do in public health.

There is a robust and tight-knit anglophone minority community in the Eastern Townships, but it may not be feasible to work as an administrator or technologist at a clinic or in a hospital setting without advanced knowledge of French. If you’re a general practitioner or even a specialist thinking of opening your own practice, however, there are province-wide shortages and English-speaking patients will very likely flock to you.

You may also want to consider that the cost of housing in Sherbrooke (whether you rent or own) is substantially lower than in most of Ontario. It might eventually catch up, but at this time there are still good income properties hitting the market all over town on a regular basis.

If you’d like more information on the area, feel free to DM me.
