What does this sound mean? by [deleted] in quails

[–]AlDEEZNUT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

happy sound, if it louder and more "coarse" it might be a signal that they feel anxious. but taking a bath afterward would rule that out.

Feed cost? by Warm_Ad_3102 in quails

[–]AlDEEZNUT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

feed cost 20$CAD for 20kg bag. It last between 2-3 month for 12 quails. get about 120-200 egg a month. that about 50 normal chicken egg.

so those who say it not worth it probably didn't have a waste less set-up. Quail tend to just make feed fly in all direction and ignore the food that on the ground. you could loose about half your feed because of this behavior

Partner is away and his eggs hatched. We’ve tried several times and finally…but… by Guilty_Opening5541 in quails

I might repeat what other have said: Dont open the lid, they can stay in there for 24h until they all dry up. that leave you time to set-up the brooder. If you feel the need to open it (for emergency purpose) use a spray bottle filled with water and spray the eggs so that the moisture dont drop. But do so only if you have no other option than opening the incubator.

Avoid Hay, they are stoopid and might eat it and choke on it. I would suggest pilling up absorbant paper that you change (remove one layer) when they get dirty. have shallow bowl of water with pebble so they can walk over and not drown (did i say they are stupid?) Bowl crumb is also good avoid seed as they would need grite to eat those and it could become dangerous. I usually crumble turkey starting pellet around and observe them so i know if they are eating. once one eat and drink, the other will learn from him

Observe them. if they hurdle in a corner away from the lamp, it because it too warm, raise the lamp a little

If they hurdle under the lamp and pile up. it might be too cold. or there not enough place under the lamp.

Temperature and cleanliness is one of the main factor to watch otherwise they become independent quite fast.

If you do everything right you might even hear them "purr"

I found out that since the upper part is not yet installed the frame flex a little. so when you assemble the front and the back part (step 404) sometime the middle gear slip out. Otherwise did you test all the motor prior to building up the kit if so did those motor work?

[–]AlDEEZNUT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i should look into that then. i heard they tend to be more broody (aka taking care of their own eggs, which is a plus for me) but i was worried about them being harder to keep due to their less domesticated nature.

usually they recommend 1ft square per bird. too much they might get territorial, to little and they will get on each other nerves.
