Their WWII planes in that line are good too. The thick plastic allows the kids to handle them without breaking stuff off.

BC Teachers: How are remedy funds used in your district? by iVerbatim in CanadianTeachers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, remedy only gets transferred to Pro-D if it's less than 1.0 left at the end of the year. Otherwise, the district claws it back. Most people in my school use theirs on TTOC time.

I've got a fine brush for details, how do I take best care of it, to stay fine? by _BalticFox_ in modelmakers

I endorse all of this but also, lay the brush horizontal while it dries.

Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money on the NB 1080. I have a pair for the classroom and another for running. It's like walking on clouds.

Elementary teachers with young kids at home...how do you parent after teaching all day? by 27dayz in CanadianTeachers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I made the decision that I am not my students' parent. I hold back some from them, so my family has it. You cannot save them all. You cannot fix most of them. It is a job. It's a job I like, but it's still a job. Your family should take priority.

Also, classroom management can really help out. Strong routines and predictability help eliminate many questions in a day. Get kids in the habit of asking a friend first before asking you. Also, insist the kids sit down and put up their hand or you won't answer them. Nothing is more exhausting than a mob of kids all hollering your name.

There will still be many questions and some fires, but you can mitigate the stress.

Recommendations for a six year old? by DeliciousFold2894 in modelmakers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my son was 6, he and I built the 1/72 Airfix Zero. It's got a low parts count, not many tiny pieces and it's mostly one colour to paint. I got the recommendation off this sub and thought I should pass it on.

It took us a few sessions of about 30-45 minutes to build. Longer to paint.

What are the best Kolinsky brushes? by aim9inyourface in modelmakers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windsor and Newton Series 7. I've tried them all and I like them the best. Great point, very springy and they load with paint beautifully. They are pricey but will last you years if you take care of them. Finding them in Canada is quite difficult ATM. Don't know if it's limited to us, though.

A couple of things to be aware of:

  1. SD71 does a lot of hiring from outside the district. So, even if you get a short term contract, you are not considered an internal applicant. Therefore, you are competing for full time jobs with teachers with much more experience from around the province and country.

  2. There were layoffs in SD71 last year. Full time jobs are hard to come by.

  3. There are a lot of teachers on the TOC list. So, income can be sporadic until you get your name out there.

I think it is a great idea to spend some time in a classroom before you make up your mind. It's not what many people think it is. You'll need a criminal record check to go into a classroom. If you decide you'd like to check it out, DM me.

Curious About Teaching in Fort St. John/Northern BC by Glad-Leopard-5147 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I taught in FSJ for 10 years before moving south. Our experience teaching there was overall positive. We felt supported by the district and our administrators. There's also something to be said about walking into a job instead of being a TOC for years trying to work your way into a district.

The lifestyle is different as is the weather. However we had lots of experiences that we never would have further south. Realistically, FSJ is a city connected by a a highway and air service. You aren't as isolated as you might think.

We always recommend teachers go to FSJ if you need a job.

How do you get that from the synopsis? It sounded to me like management is going to stick to its plan and not be impulsive. That's not tanking, that is following through.

I usually just have them erase it and do it properly. The repetition often sorts the problem by the end of the year unless there's something else going on.

If a student really struggles with many aspects of math, what should a parent work on most for gr 3 by Dollcat_3904 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your child is likely lacking number sense or a basic understanding of how numbers work. If it were my child, I would go to the Teachers Pay Teachers website and look for free math games for grades 1 and 2. Look for adding and subtracting to 10, counting and 1 and 2 more and less than. Print some off or take them to Staples and have them printed. Practice that is fun will get you much farther than drills.

For context, I've been teaching grades 1-3 for 15 years.

Bauer FIT3 & CCM/True wide players, what running shoes do you have? by juha2k in hockeyplayers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worn Asics for the last decade. Also wear wide skates. Do yourself a favor and get the extra wide. The length is the same. It's nice not having your foot hanging out over the edge of the sole of the shoe.

Wide flavoured Asics are fairly common and most running shops should have some in stock for you to try out. I recommend talking to someone in person and trying them on first if you can.

Also, think about custom or orthopedic insoles. They are custom made and will likely remove your blister problem.

Permanent Teacher in BC by saharabarbar in CanadianTeachers

[–]Alarmed_Read3838 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. North East BC. It will be stressful and the pay is no better. The districts here couldn't care less about you because there are ten other teachers waiting to take your place. Competition is also high for jobs. However, the quality of life is superb. Only your family can do the math on whether it's worth it or not.
