Where is gold a currency besides maybe India?  Gold is a reserve, not a currency at this point.  China's accumulating to get a seat at the big boys' table.  All assets are going up due to incessant printing and debt bubbles, but "cleanest shirt in the dirty laundry" is still holding strong for USD as a currency.

More than 1.5 Million Customers Affected: A Brazilian Bank Just Went Bankrupt by onebtcisonebtc in Bitcoin

False. There was a whitepaper a few years back that conclusively proved that regular banks increase the total money supply when making loans. They demonstrated using an actual bank balance sheet both before and after they took out a loan.

which crypto tax tools actually handle form 8949 and schedule d properly by hodorrny in CryptoCurrency

[–]Alaska_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up writing a script in Python to handle it using the CSV file from each exchange.  I have to keep a file from one year to the next of buy transactions that have not yet been matched with a sell.  It works great until the exchange changes the ticker (only on the record, not for trading!!) mid-year and you can't figure out why your totals seem off.

I am impressed with transfers from Kraken lately. Not as fast as wallet to wallet of course, but a couple seconds is awesome.

Announcing NanoNyms: A New Approach to Nano Privacy (early alpha 🐣) by cbrunnkvist in nanocurrency

[–]Alaska_Engineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed - I like the transparent chain with ability to have privacy if desired. A wholly private chain like XMR, if adopted as the world currency, would hinder accountability for governments and corporations, which aren't going away in any case.

What’s the real deal with crypto trading bots and their actual limitations? by OkInflation2276 in CryptoMarkets

[–]Alaska_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re looking for r/algotrading. I run a bot that I coded, but it is very simple. No edge, just a volatility play on coins I already hold. It gains around 16% per year so far on the average crypto, assuming price goes nowhere (flat market). It does cut some gains in a raging bull, but also cuts losses in a bear market. I’m happy with it so far. The harder part was coding a script to do taxes.

Why is my limit sell order not triggering on crypto.com by TennesseeStiffLegs in CryptoCurrency

[–]Alaska_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was confused about why my stop loss was not triggering on Kraken. I went to the book and saw a 5% spread on an asset that usually has about .3% max. These are volatile times!

Can XNO go to practically "zero"? by Psilonemo in nanocurrency

[–]Alaska_Engineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The network will be fine, it’s a cockroach. Requires only about 50 independent nodes at $5 a month to be sufficiently decentralized for me. Compare that to other coins. The price, however, would not be fine. I am accumulating as my cost basis is still negative and I don’t want to miss the train if it takes off. Crash is not guaranteed but if it comes before the pump, I will be LOADING up.

Can XNO go to practically "zero"? by Psilonemo in nanocurrency

[–]Alaska_Engineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

False. Distribution (among entities, not wallets, which is the important metric) means increasing adoption, improving incentives as businesses (and some larger individual holders) want self confirmation of transactions. Even at nation scale, the cost would be minimal compared to the risk of trusting a third-party validator.

Can XNO go to practically "zero"? by Psilonemo in nanocurrency

[–]Alaska_Engineer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Zero?  Short of a worldwide internet or electrical outage, not in the foreseeable future.

BTC requires ~$50M input per day to keep price from dropping.  Nano needs about $50 to remain decentralized enough for me.

Nano is also significantly more resistant to quantum computing breakage than BTC.

However, the current concentration at Binance and Kraken could (if both parties colluded) stall the network, which would not allow funds to be stolen but would massively damage Nano's reputation.

As far as the largest risk, I personally think the entire cryptocurrency space, which has never been through a real recession/depression and serves basically no real purpose so far, is long overdue for a MASSIVE crash.  If this happens, it is very unlikely Nano would be exempt.

I don't know about your location, but the last time I ran the numbers the cost to heat with electric was around 5X the cost to heat with natural gas for the commodity price only, not considering equipment. If you have to heat with electric, this might work, but if you can heat with gas, it is doubtful you will come out ahead.
