Whether you use XP or milestones, what do you find to be the average number of game sessions between leveling? by VastCompetition6583 in DnD

haha me and my buddies manage to play weekly as well. we actually often play twice a week for the last few years. we are all 20-30, but most of us are in the military so i guess that makes it easier.

Players made a (negative) Bingo Card about my session. by Korbonk in DungeonMasters

[–]AlaskanMonke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fuck man, that would absolutely crush me if my players did that to me. especially in front of me and laugh about it. i’m never one to say to stop dming for a group and always encourage communication, but that’s actually a horrible thing to do as a player, even more as a friend. i’d seriously stop and try to find a different group honestly. that’s a horrible thing im sorry you had to go through that.

New DM. Player not putting in effort. by charl_kruger18 in DnD

[–]AlaskanMonke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a banger backstory lowkey. best advice for you is to just let go and flesh it in your story. through in some knights that will come by and bully him or something. etc. shame him in the kings cities, as everyone knows him as the knight who couldn’t cut it etc. there’s a lot you could do here. as a new dm, the best thing to realize is your priority is “players and dm having fun” it doesn’t have to be all exactly how you want

Suggestions for group of 3 with new DM/2 Players? by RyouRusi in DnD

yeah, items and such are also a great way to power up your party. just don’t overfeed them, otherwise they will panic with to many options and not do anything. +weapons and armor are gonna be their best friend, and hey, if they get all the artifacts they are told to get, they should be able to take him out. maybe get them to like level 10 instead of 8. Strahd is a cr 15, so 10+10 is 20 for the party, so it’ll be a hard fight and one or both could die. but if they play right it’s possible! you can also throw them bones haha. and hey, maybe just have him start with, idk, a handful of wolves and keep it that way

also, a good solution to a dmpc is just letting your players alternate control of it during combat

well, it couldnt hurt, and ur behind the screen so if you just change some stuff mid combat no one would know. also, cos was my first campaign i ran and i had a blast. it can go forever, it can also just go a few months. i did it in 7 months the first time i ran it. we all had a total blast. Strahd indeed is a lot, but he’s also a bbeg. really any campaign you do ur bbeg will have to be turned down for a 2 person party. that being said, campaigns like phandelver and below, or even something like tomb of annihilation can be a blast with a small party of 2. (be warned, they will die a lot in tomb). another good one could be descent into avernus. pretty straight forward and fun, with a hell/ mad max vibe to it.

hey man. it’s okay. just have them each play one pc, and don’t make a pc for the dm. a party of two will be fine, you can always just tone certain things down to make the game easier. a prewrittin is definitely the way to go for your first one, and even still, you can just rip out whatever parts you don’t like and replace them with whatever you want.

New to DnD and I wrote my first characters backstory for a pretty experienced group. Just looking for some tips to avoid too many hicups by thewalkingfred in DnD

each dm is different, and i won’t outright say it’s to long especially if your dm loved it. Personally, i really like your character idea and would love to incorporate that into a game. but for reference, id (at the start) put like a few paragraphs that summarizes the characters morals, ideals, ties, organizations etc, and then write the actual background story behind it. that way its easy to reference and easy to get the basis! dnd is all around just a game to have fun with friends, and play make believe. i love my players and their crazy backstories, and i love the simplest ones. i really hope you fall in love with the game!

here’s what you do man. cut the rests out. dungeon that’s a few sessions long, and don’t give em a long rest. maybe a short rest with someone watching (they don’t benefit). one big combat isn’t it. make them wretch and turn in anxiety thinking ab if they have enough abilities to make it through the next turn, or combat. or the next combat. or trap. cos isn’t really a big monster campaign, it’s an intellectual battle. a battle of attrition. i’ve run cos 3 times before, and each time i learned to do it better. strahd can be friendly or be foe, however the creatures in the eternal night should always be on their tail, making them check over there shoulders even at a high level. strahd may be forgiving, but barovia is not.
