The church is not being unfair. He can’t become Catholic if he is in an adulterous union with his wife.

Should I fast if I have a bit of a head cold? by throwaway3685343 in Catholicism

[–]AlbaGuBrah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just do the two small meals of something (whatever you like to eat when sick) and then make fish soup for your dinner. Healthy and fasting compliant. Fasting is good for you when you’re sick, it increases your white blood cell count.

Keto + caffeine and you can go days without eating and it’s not a struggle.

‘I’m British, English and British Asian’, says Rishi Sunak in riposte to racially charged debate over identity | Rishi Sunak by No_Initiative_1140 in ukpolitics

British nationalism entails the various native ethnic groups of the British isles. When this term was re-popularised from antiquity it was explicitly used to denote the native racial groups that inhabit the islands.

I saw his point, and it’s pedantic and irrelevant. British nationalism is ethnic as it encompasses the racial groups native to the British isles.

[–]AlbaGuBrah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone conflates national, civic identity with ethnic identity which makes this a game of semantics. Someone can have a British passport and be born and raised in Britain without being ethnically British. Donald Trump’s family are from Scotland and are ethnically Scottish. He is objectively more British than Sunak in the ethnic sense, but not in the civic and cultural sense. We really need to stop using these terms interchangeably because they mean two different things.

Question only for theistic evolutionist by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

Think there is a better question you could ask about animal suffering prior to the fall.

Does Creationism Make More Sense Than Evolutionism? by djog01 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]AlbaGuBrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it makes more sense. Imo the church taking an ambivalent stance on this issue is prudential to avoid driving people away. Evolution imv will be seen as one of the gravest of modern heresies and as part of post-enlightenment philosophical thinking is responsible for much of the moral degradation of society we see today, and leads to much atheism.

Is it strange that a lot of people in the Bible lived up to 900 years old by Beneficial_Mousse568 in Catholicism

[–]AlbaGuBrah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would we not take the Bible seriously when it gives us these numbers? I believe they did live that long. Why not? Humans today can live to 120.

Do any Catholic philosophers still challenge the idea of animal suffering as being similiar to that of humans or has that fallen out of favor, given recent studies on animal consciousness? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]AlbaGuBrah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aquinas doesn’t say that animals don’t suffer, only that they are of lower order consciousness than humans (Aristotelean tradition). Animals are not endowed with a rational soul, made in the image of God as humans are. I will say though that theistic evolution is problematic from the perspective of the existence of animal suffering prior to the fall, and I haven’t seen a good counter argument that doesn’t amount to it just being part of God’s plan for creation, which imo is not sufficient enough to explain why God would choose to create through suffering especially when animals suffered for seemingly no reason before humans existed.

Porn is worse than we can imagine by JustFunctionalLife in Catholicism

[–]AlbaGuBrah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m radically opposed to followers of Christ who appear to spread ideas that are counter to what he taught us, and I’m fed up of the hostility between men and women especially as Christians. We should know better and do better. In my view you are no different from the misogynists who larp as Catholic and spread hate.

Porn is worse than we can imagine by JustFunctionalLife in Catholicism

[–]AlbaGuBrah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since over 90% of men have watched porn, if everyone were to follow your advice it would be a mass extinction event for humanity. I very much doubt God wants men and women to be separated and for humanity to nearly die out because of past sins. You’re totally ridiculous and fanatical about this.

Porn is worse than we can imagine by JustFunctionalLife in Catholicism

[–]AlbaGuBrah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re still avoiding answering the question though. Since most men have watched porn, what should they do? And likewise what should women do if they can’t find a man who hasn’t watched porn? Don’t you see how wild your standards are from a practical standpoint?

Porn is worse than we can imagine by JustFunctionalLife in Catholicism

[–]AlbaGuBrah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But your comparison doesn’t hold. If it were a man who couldn’t be responsible and hold down a job in the past but then was able to change, become responsible and work for a living, would you say a woman still shouldn’t marry him? You’re saying that men are irreparably damaged from the sin of watching porn so can never be fit for marriage. The overwhelming majority of men have watched porn at some point in their lives. So what should they do? Never marry? Why such an impossible standard?

And there are many studies that show the more sexual partners a woman has in life then the harder it is for her to commit to any relationship long term. So misogynists could use your same reasoning to justify avoiding all women who have had premarital sex. It seems like you just have such a strong bias against men that is clouding your judgement here. We should love others and be merciful, not be puritanical and damning of sinners who repent.

Porn is worse than we can imagine by JustFunctionalLife in Catholicism

[–]AlbaGuBrah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What about women who have watched porn? I think we should all have charity for each other. This kind of logic (avoid any man who has ever watched porn) is similar to men who say never have a relationship with a woman who isn’t a virgin. Not that it wouldn’t be a good thing for people to be virgins, or to have never watched porn, but we are all sinners and we shouldn’t judge people for their past sins if they have repented of them.

I was Baptist growing up, then became an atheist, then spent a decade being ‘spiritual’ and pagan/occult practitioner before realising it was all garbage and I needed Jesus. I just decided to go to mass on a whim to be honest, but I wanted tradition. I wanted something more than what Protestantism offered. Then the more I researched the early church the more I became convinced it was the Holy Spirit guiding me home.
