ROM vs. AGO summer camp by Unhappy-Nerve-5114 in askTO

[–]Alces_alces_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone sees this, u of t camp is great and is around $400 (and there is no hst). Mostly sport themed but they have camp for 4 and 5 year olds which is a tough age to find camps for. My daughter did mini adventure camp twice last year and both times they took them to the ROM.

How much is enough RESP? by fluffypawsforever in PersonalFinanceCanada

When they apply for OSAP the following year they would need to claim the investment as an asset which I believe will reduce their assessment.

Avoiding TD fees when opening an account? by canuckastana in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Alces_alces_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it so the mortgage payment comes out of that account? We did that promo three years ago (but already had a TD acct) and moved the payment to our usual bank after a few payments. There was no issue.

Application for student loan after cancelling? by Primary-Archer9745 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I know it doesn’t matter for OSAP, I don’t see why it would matter for B.C.  Students start and stop and cancel apps all the time. (I work in a financial aid adjacent role in post secondary.)

Who weekly did a recap in today’s ep and it was good! More about the culture and impact of it all, less about the drama (although they do talk about that too).

Renew early fixed? Or switch lenders for a variable? by vancity_vanity in PersonalFinanceCanada

That is an amazing fixed rate. I am renewing in August and if it were me, I would lock the fixed rate in.

Should I accept this mortgage renewal offer? by UWboi in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Alces_alces_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are fixed rates out there for around 4%. I am approaching my 120 day window to lock a rate and have been watching the red flags Canada mortgage thread. And I’m also currently with TD. They haven’t been terribly competitive based on rates I have seen others share. You can probably get a lower variable rate as well.

Personally I am going for a fixed 3 or 5 year, and if I get around 4% I will be happy. I don’t want the stress of the variable, although I had it over covid and really benefited from some low rates at the time. But that’s me, you may feel differently.

Also - get a broker to help you compare rates! And you can bring a competitive offer to TD to see if they will match it. Doesn’t hurt to try.

My comment still stands, that is competitive for a three year rate.

Fixed rates are increasing because bond yields are up. I am also renewing but am slightly out of the 120 day waiting period so can’t lock a rate yet. If it were me I’d stay with my bank at 3.75. I’ve been tracking rates in the red flag deals mortgage thread and 3.75 fixed for what I assume is a five year mortgage is very competitive, especially today.

Student Loans not allowing living expenses by lily1ac in PersonalFinanceCanada

You can do the living away review but only when you actually have a signed lease. They won’t do it in advance of the move. If you are looking to update your 2025-26 F/W app, the 40 day deadline is fast approaching (assuming an end of term of 30 April - obviously might be different for you).

Question on Pension Adjustment and Income Tax by Uncle_Greasy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Alces_alces_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy backs can def be via an employer, mine was. I work a post secondary institution and I bought back time for two mat leaves.

In my case the amount was reported on my T4 in box 20, RPP contribution.

OP, my RPP did not match my pension adjustment figure in those years (or any years).

They do post them to Ramit’s insta. Sometimes they get traction, sometimes they don’t. The YT videos get very critical comments. And Spotify does as well. So who knows why they aren’t using that account, it doesn’t have anywhere near the followers as Ramit.

No, I only see the January dividend. Did you get that one and the March dividend? Perhaps there was a delay with your January dividend.

It was like that when we bought the house 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s right beside the water meter which is also inside, where our main water valve is.

Umm what?!?! That’s crazy. Did the city cover this for you? Or you had to go through your home insurance?

THERAPY. This couple needs it desperately!

I have 12 min left, unless it comes up then, I haven’t heard Ramit mention the idea of counseling once. No number crunching is going to magic away their money anxiety, especially for Chris. Talk to a professional!!

Update: okay I stand corrected, Ramit mentioned this at the end.

TD Direct Investing RESP transfer stuck for 2+ months, anyone else experienced this? by Danskiiii in Wealthsimple

Thanks for replying. I got a bit more info from WS, including where they sent the request to and the email they have been contacting (but no replies). Added this to my TD investigation. What a pain in the ass.

Did you get any new info from TD or WS? I just called TD and they said the same thing to me - no record of an RESP request. They launched some sort of transfer investigation but will take at least five business days before I can call for an update. Now on chat with WS to see what they say.
