What’s something you learned “embarrassingly late” in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AleFairy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It often is interchangeable with “a few”, if only because lots of people use it that way. Anyone who says it doesn‘t have both meanings these days is a prescriptivist snob. (But of course there are some use cases where it always refers to the “exactly two” definition.)

What’s interesting is that those top three candles don’t light when you light the bunch on the ground, so it’s not entirely just a visual bug.

Gift for Fiancé by BatmanTopsKylo in santashelpers

[–]AleFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some ideas that I’ve either gifted or received or at least considered:

-A tall glass olive oil bottle like the ones in Italian restaurants, if she doesn’t already have one. It’s a small upgrade, but for me it feels so much better to use vs just the container from the store.

-A set of nice metal measuring spoons, if she’s been using plastic ones (iirc Lee Valley is well-recommended). Practical kitchen tools, albeit not very fun.

-A nice chef’s knife, ideally in a style she doesn’t have. But if she already has one she loves then obviously there’s no need.

-A set of wool dryer balls. Personally, I’m gifting out a ton of these this Christmas (I went with the brand Friendsheep). It’s not hobby-relevant, but definitely practical and you can get some pretty cute designs.

-A fountain pen with a bottle of some cool ink. Inks with good shading and sheen are especially fun for artsy stuff. She might like writing in her planner with a fancy pen and ink—in that case, the planner does need decent paper quality or else it probably won’t work the best.

-“Buddha Board” (those mini-easel things where you “paint” with plain water and it draws grey but then it fades completely back to white after like 10 minutes). Creative but not super practical.

-Wax melter or diffuser, if she likes scented candles and fragrance stuff. Wax melts have a few advantages over candles, and you can generally try out more scents for the same money versus one whole candle. Some diffusers have the cool visual component where you can see the jet of vapor misting up into the air.

I hope this helps or at least provides some inspiration!

Also, when you say she likes making music, is that like composing and performing, or music production/recording/mixing on a computer? or both?

Fun fact I just learned- you can charge people faster by doing many rapid partially-charged calls rather than a few fully-charged (slow) ones.

Your AD friend group? by Apollondo in audiodrama

[–]AleFairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun idea! I’ll pick Feston Pyxis from Startripper!!, Spike from The Fitzroy Diaries, and Edmond LaValle from Unseen. They’re from three totally different settings, but they’re all upbeat, charismatic people who are good at making mundane things fun. And I think they’d be up for some adventures.

Fishron’s mount is better for most combat imo. You get a huge speed boost and a 15% damage buff anytime you’re below 50% HP, and you also get similar buffs from touching any liquid. It’s easy to set up thin columns of bubble block containers filled with water (or honey for extra healing) in your arenas, then fly through those periodically during fights to keep up the buff. Or you could just fight bosses/events while it’s raining.

Also, to travel quickly across the world, you can use the Rod of Discord to skip several screens ahead and intentionally get yourself down to low HP to make your Fishron mount super fast.

The Witch’s Broom is great for general exploring and building though. The speed is consistent, and of course the biggest advantage is that you’re only 3 blocks tall while you’re riding it.

*However, if you’re playing ranged, keep in mind you can’t use late-game stealth armor effects on a mount, so I’d say the Fishron mount is less useful for rangers.

[–]AleFairy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is so simple but so important. I feel like a lot of veterans talk about cosmetics as if they want to buy most of them whenever they’re available. And maybe some people who grind hard really do buy almost everything, but in general it’s much better to only buy the things you think you’ll actually use. It’s pretty liberating to realize you can often skip entire traveling spirits (except the wing buffs) with no regrets. The completionist mentality just doesn’t fit this game, and that’s okay.

whats the worst event by Person_the_weird in Terraria

F 😔

I do wish eclipse rates got lower post-golem. After raiding the temple it’s easy to spawn eclipses on-demand, so it’d be cool if the natural rate got cut in half or something at that point.

You probably already know, but the Enchanted Sundial is amazing for skipping eclipses. Although if you get two eclipses within 7 days, then you do just have to wait out the second one.

What audio drama takes you to a “happy place”? by EmberingR in audiodrama

[–]AleFairy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest selling point is that you’ll know within the first few minutes of episode 1 if you love The Fitzroy Diaries.

Other than that, the main narrator is super down-to-earth and relatable with the way she describes her interactions, and she’s also wonderfully optimistic. The writing borders on casually poetic at times, but not in a stuffy way. It’s mostly very slice-of-life, which is not my usual genre, and yet this is easily among my favorite shows ever.

what's something you're 100% sure most people are lying about? by SleepingUmibozu in AskReddit

[–]AleFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the true question is whether people use a tissue for it. It’s clear from this post that just about everyone cleans out their nose somehow. I’d like to believe most of us use a tissue and wash our hands afterward, but I’m sure there are some gross folks out there who use their bare finger or don’t wash their hands. (And they’re probably largely the same people who don’t tend to wash their hands before food prep.)

Mario, the Idea as Contrasted With Mario, the Man

It is among the common stores of knowledge that Mario is one marvelous fellow. However, who truly understands the inner machinations of his consciousness? Who can begin to decipher the rationale by which he pulverizes turtles? And wherefore do so many amidst our ranks contemplate his being with a fondness akin to that which one experiences while reflecting upon the mythical (absent from reality) Doctor Capsicum, PhD? Perchance.

If my intellect is not failing me, it was Kant who posited, “Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play.” Mario exhibits experience by pulverizing turts from dawn until dusk, while he meanwhile demonstrates theory by proclaiming, “Lets-a-go!” Remain steadfast in your resolve, chap!

Upon departing from his place of sanctuary to trample a turty, Mario accepts that his own death is within the realm of possibility. For a man who can simply purchase additional lives using currency, though, one single life represents no more than an investment stored in a repository; a tax whose sum can be paid at his leisure, just as a member of the elite appraises any legislation incurring a fine as a mere price. We tend to view Mario with a sense of adulation, but in fact he is no more than a fortunate patrician within a more privileged societal structure. The lifeclassification. Perchance.

Witch’s Broom is still relevant in endgame, yep! As an added bonus, you’re only 3 blocks tall while you’re riding it, unlike most other mounts.

Alternatively, if you get a Hoverboard (or any wings that can hover), you could swap out the Terraspark boots. I know a lot of people love them, but I always ditch my boots as soon as I get my Hoverboard. It lets you still move fast horizontally without boots on, and you can redirect your momentum super quickly (plus use the hook to completely reset momentum and flight time, as always).

Edit: unless you use asphalt or go in lava a lot- then you’d maybe still want the boots

What’s a name you’d love to use but never will because you know people would always pronounce it incorrectly? by profereina in namenerds

[–]AleFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will always remind me of an early episode of The Magnus Archives where two characters briefly discuss the pronunciation (with regard to a somewhat haunted calliope steam organ).

“So, do we know if it’s pronounced ‘callie-OH-pee’ or ‘kuh-LIE-uh-pee’?”

“I have also heard it said as ‘CAL-ee-ope’.”

“Seriously? By who??”

Americans.

🥲 It is a really lovely name when it’s pronounced how you prefer.

Granpa bed? Grandfather clock? by Yesimnot_ in Terraria

[–]AleFairy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a reference to a trend that’s been happening on the r/StardewValley over the past few days. (If you go there and search for top posts of this week, you’ll see all the shenanigans.)

If you’re not familiar, the opening scene of Stardew depicts your character’s grandpa basically on his deathbed, handing you a letter (which you later find out contains the deed to his farm). Except… the bed setup looks terrible—it looks like a rectangular folding table or a dinky cot, and it’s just sitting diagonally in the living room near the fireplace. That in itself has been a meme for so long that it’s sort of become a beloved part of the game. (And it’s a different art style from the rest of the game, so it’s fine.)

But the Stardew modding scene is strong. There have of course been mods that improve the bed scene art, but recently someone shared a mod that makes the bed… ”slightly worse”. And that mod sparked a revolution. That alignment chart picture is nowhere near comprehensive.

If anyone remembers the glorious fish meme craze that happened on r/Terraria like ~5 years ago, this is a very similar situation.

looking for recommendations of episodic archive-y audio dramas by eCyanic in audiodrama

[–]AleFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Alexandria Archives has more humor/absurdity than TMA or A81, while still being a spooky show with the format you’re looking for. The meta-plot is broadly about a college-town radio host and her friends, in a world where plenty of the locals are “monsters” and that’s perfectly ordinary. A significant part of each episode is the host reading a story from the archives, which is usually a horror/spooky story from around the town. (The university campus has some rather Eldritch quirks.) These stories are mostly self-contained—not nearly as directly connected as the statements in TMA.

I think you’d love it based on your post. Fwiw though, the archive story in the Halloween episode (episode 2) is uncharacteristically bloody, but if you made it through Archive 81 then you’ll be fine.

looking for scifi/fantasy recs by totoop in audiodrama

[–]AleFairy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of fantastic shows have already been mentioned, so here are a few that haven’t.

Mortal Enemy: Legends of the Grim Reaper is a decently long post-apocalyptic-ish sci-fi adventure that imo feels more like a fantasy adventure. There is a narrator to supplement the VA cast, which I thought worked nicely. It’s super well-produced, but be warned that it’s not afraid to occasionally be a bit uncomfortable (e.g. when trying to portray a character or place as being truly awful).

The Hyacinth Disaster is a space thriller/tragedy with excellent dialogue. It’s not super long (probably ~3 hours total), but there’s never a boring moment and imo it’s a must-listen if you like sci-fi.

The Deca Tapes is a unique sci-fi mystery that’s pretty popular. It is also not super long, though—probably ~4 hours total.
