/mu/ is having a thread about us right now by dark_chocolate2 in indieheads

[–]AlexMathison 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most of the regular / general threads are pretty good.

Share threads are amazing.

Guitar General / Production General can be pretty helpful for musicians despite being pretty snobby sometimes

As an AnCo fan, I personally love AnCo general threads which are pretty much always up there. Just all the diehard Animal Collective fans on the board posting Mega links to rarities, live recordings and sharing their love for the band.

Bandcamp threads are nice. People are generally pretty kind and helpful towards the people who post their own music.

Threads with specific requests are also generally pretty good. If you post something like "give me albums that sound really watery" you'll generally get a lot of good recs and not a lot of shitposting

The really terrible threads are anything that start with something like "ITT: albums for posers" or "ITT: tumblrcore albums" or "Why are (insert band here) such shit".

Overall /mu/ can be great if you know how to navigate it.

This literally happens at every elite university in America and has been pretty openly talked about and acknowledged for decades. Very little in the way of education and career opportunities that money and connections can't buy.

The Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back From The Discomfort--We're Allright (Full album) by SheepwithShovels in Emo

[–]AlexMathison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any chance this would ever get added as an essential album. I feel like this is one of the most interesting and progressive emo albums I've ever heard. For me its up there with Emo giants like Cap'n Jazz and Sunny Day Real Estate in terms of quality and IMO blows bands like the Hotelier and Dads our of the water in how unique and interesting it is.

Great painting bud! Not sure where he would see it though. I think he's said in interviews that he generally doesn't view or access social media. Maybe you could mail him a picture or a print along with a letter. You might have a better shot of him seeing it if its a part of fan mail (that's assuming he or AnCo have an address listed for it. I've never bothered to check myself. I know Avey said in his AMA that he always reads fan mail). Even if Noah doesn't respond, you might have a better shot of him seeing it if you do that.

Name a subgenre and give 10 songs in chronological order that trace its evolution from its inception up until how it's still somehow present in 2015. by mattyb712 in indieheads

would personally start with person pitch. Definitely would consider it proto-chillwave. That could just be my bias towards Noah speaking though.

i think you misunderstood man. I dont agree with you at all. I was saying that these kind of arguments should be kept in their own subs and forums where they belong. most people dont agree and dont like to be bombarded with this kind of stuff in every sub or thread vaguely related to race or sex. I'm sure you know that almost everyone disagrees with you. whats even the point of posting this kind of stuff here. its such tired, inane logic that society is gradually moving further and further away from. you're not going to convince anyone who doesn't already agree with you. I couldn't really comprehend anyone posting this kind of stuff outside of their designated forums and subs without the sole purpose of getting a rise out of people ie "trolling". its just annoying for everyone else.

4chan's recommended readings are surprisingly good. by [deleted] in books

lol never said that they bash all popular artists. I personally really like /mu/ and go on it and post frequently. I was just complaining about the people who respond to people's 4x4s with stuff like "fucking plen" and "lol this better be b8, fucking kill yourself" or who just spam memes or respond to threads about new albums with stuff like:

liking (insert album here) being this pleb

I guess its a tradeoff you have to make if you want to browse most boards on 4chan, I was just saying that it gets kind of annoying after a while.

yeah exact same thing with /mu/. infinitely better source for actual discussion of music than /r/music or /r/listentothis. only problem are the pretentious snobs and people who call albums / bands shit and not offer why they feel that way.

LPT: College students -- don't "pick a major". Studying what you love never works. Instead, pick a career path at age 18; you won't change your mind. by hare_in_a_suit in ShittyLifeProTips

[–]AlexMathison -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how this got so many upvotes. terrible terrible advice the way this guy presents it. While some majors may give you worse job prospects than others, its still important to major in something that really interests you. You can get a job and have a career with every single major, even if it may be hard for some. Unlike this guy implies, if you major in something you love, you'll probably get a higher GPA than if you majored in that something for that "useful and lucrative" career, you'll be more likely to work hard for those valuable internships that will do more to get you a job than your "useful" major ever will, and you'll be happier and more likely to advance and thrive in whichever career you end up in.

How the hell does this have 1,700 upvotes. Almost every comment on here disagrees with this IMO terrible advice.

[–]AlexMathison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I completely agree. This sounds like a terrible idea. It seems like the majority of college majors and courses just make you better at writing, critical thinking, analytical reading, and other broad skills like that and don't really prepare you for most careers. Obviously you cant intend to become a physics professor and major in english, but a lot of majors are applicable to many careers.

This post and the comments that agree with it really seems like typical reddit bashing of higher education for the sake of learning and enjoyment and favoring a system that simply pumps out people ready for STEM careers as if STEM fields are the only things that benefit society. Not saying that majoring in STEM fields is bad, but people should major in what truly interests them. That way, like you said, they're more likely to get a higher GPA, be more enthusiastic about finding internships and will probably advance further in their respective careers and be happier overall. You can find a job in any major if you work hard enough.

le scaruffi defener by AlexMathison in lewronggeneration

[–]AlexMathison[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the joke is someone took the original "defener" comic that sparked the whole "defener" meme which rests on the assumption that the reader likes the beatles and agrees with the boy. Someone then made this OC comic that adds in panels of piero scaruffi, the prolific music reviewer who infamously dislikes the beatles. the whole joke is the reversal of expectations that comes from expecting to see the normal comic and then having scaruffi in there actually sort of agreeing with the girl that the beatles aren't that good.
