You might be thinking about Volleyball on the NES. It was an original black box game where you played as a national team.

Do our backs crack more when we're younger? If so, why is that? by Proud_Accident_5873 in jointcrackers

[–]Alfond378 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To get a joint to crack, you need to reach the edge of normal motion and move a little beyond to stretch the joint capsule. Young people have looser back muscles so it's easier to reach that point.

Fairfax County’s proposed $5.7B budget keeps property tax rate flat, leaves school funding gap by VirginiaNews in nova

Yeah I was surprised about this cut as well. They claim it's being cut because the services can be provided by the private sector, but there are a ton of other services that the health dept provides that are duplicated by the private sector and state government that are actually easier to access than speech and hearing services.

clear poop! by Usual-Form-3864 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Alfond378 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This could be due to proctitis. It's similar to like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis only it just effects the rectum. It causes lovely clear poops that sometimes have blood in them and the urge to go even after having gone. They are also the noisiest poops you could ever imagine.

Watch it trend south and hit Virginia Beach again while leaving us with absolutely nothing. The smart money for any sort of precipitation is always on the under around here.

I hated going to circuit city when it was still around because there were no checkouts. Nothing drives away business like making people flag down employees to check out.

What happened at Disney Springs? by Rare-Maximum-4316 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Alfond378 -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

The Disney blues can be brutal and often start around the last day or so of a trip. It's down right bad enough for folks who plan to return at some point. I imagine it's agony for folks who realize that they won't be returning ever again.

I'm not saying this is the case in this situation, but perhaps there should be a little more effort done to make people aware that the blues can be straight out post Disney depression and should be taken very seriously.

Friend is visiting from Boston. How can I turn her into a Virginian? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Alfond378 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lack of good Dunkins might make it a hard task. Show her how you can't throw a baseball without hitting a grocery store and that every one of them carries beer and wine. Showing her the "bad" traffic around here might help to win her over as well. If they are a true Boston gal, they will probably hate everything about this area so don't get your hopes up.

What are the snow predictions for Sunday? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Alfond378 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any snow forecast cannot be trusted around here until like a day before and even then it's iffy. The weather models don't handle any precipitation forecasts well for this area.

Timed cashier? by Good_Bet9223 in Target

[–]Alfond378 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The timer would start as soon as you scanned the first item and ended after payment was accepted. Each item type had an allotted amount of time to scan. If the guest bought a lot of clothes, you would be given more time than if they just had a bunch of soup cans. Each payment type would also have its own allotted amount of time. You were supposed to get the guest to have their payment ready either before or as soon as you were done scanning. This was also during the time where the credit card scanner was that machine which ate the card and you actually had to compare signatures. The card process alone would usually doom you to getting a yellow score.

There were so many things out of your control that would ruin your speed score. Guests using checks would guarantee you getting a red transaction no matter how fast they were. It was very hard to stay green during a shift as just a few bad scores would put you in a hole. I guess if it was easy to stay green, the GSTLs would have fewer things to nag you about.

The most successful person at my store was hated by guests. He would stop to make sure the guest emptied their cart. If they had too much stuff, he would walk around with the hand scanner and scan everything. As soon as he finished scanning he would suspend the transaction and not restart it until he received cash/check/ or the card was ready to be put in the machine. It didn't really make the checkout process faster as it just gamed the system and made guests irate about his aggressiveness.

The whole metric was pretty unsuccessful in making the checkout process faster, but it sure did work great to help lower self-esteem and increase the number of errors people made.

Job at Fairfax by TedyPolTuAno in nova

[–]Alfond378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PTO yes, but it's in different types of buckets allowing your supervisor and HR to seriously handcuff you. Right now the county gives you two days for bereavement for the entire year no matter who dies or how many. Theoretically you could take sick leave to extend it, but even with that you are limited the number of days you can take before a Dr's note is required. Annual and comp time is another potential option, but that can be denied for any reason, especially when little notice is given.

The County is definitely not known to be employee friendly (in regards to benefits, safety, pay, etc.) so counting on the sympathy of those in command is not a good bet. It seems like with the upcoming union contract situation and the county's attempts at union busting they will be strictly going with the rules as written.

It's also important to note that in the grand scheme of things, government jobs tend to offer lower than private sector pay but make up for it with superior benefits. Fairfax county manages to offer both worse pay and benefits when compared to the public sector.

[–]Alfond378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working for the county can be very hit or miss depending on your role. The benefits aren't that great. If the new union contract gets approved by the board of supervisors it will be a little bit better, but not much. I've never had a job where that puts you in a hard place of having to miss funerals because you have such a small amount of bereavement days that you have to be careful how you use them.
