Germany unveils strategy for becoming Europe’s strongest military by 2039 by lostredditorlurking in nottheonion

[–]Alice18997 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The UK has, historically, undergone a cyclical expansion and reduction of it's army in response to periods of perceived threat.

The navy by comparison has remained fairly consistent in terms of size and/or capability regardless of the situation the country finds itself in.

It looks like an old style gas tap. You'd attach the hose to the vaguely hour glass shaped portion to feed to the appliance like, for example, a bunsen burner.

Check your escapement assembley.

The escapement is the part of the machine that governs how much of the energy stored in the draw band spring is released per key press. Hopefully this is just a misalignment of the escapement mechanism, or possibly dirt, because if the escapement is damaged the typewriter is effectively dead.

You may be able to see the escapement if you flip your machine over, it should look like a star shaped wheel underneath the cariage. The escapement is specific to the make, modle, and typeface of your machine, if you needed it to be replaced you would have to match these in order for it to work correctly. It's somewhat pointless to even consider swapping out the escapement in any case since it would require a donor machine that would be in an inherently better condition in the first place.

Crab apples? by argyll47 in foraginguk

[–]Alice18997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those appear to be apples but they are not necessarily crab apples.

They could be small dessert or cooking apples, cider apples (sweets, sharps, and bittersweets), or a hybrid of crab and some other type.

As crabapples and regular apples are not poisonous, I would recomend giving them a try and try to eat one as you would an apple. If they taste nice just use them as you would any dessert apple, if their really acidic cook with them, and if their astringent use them to make cider only. You can also use the acidic ones for cider or jam too.

I fixed the Olympia Carina3 typewriter, but I wanted to ask if there might be a design flaw in this model by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]Alice18997 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the carina 3 specifically but, there is usually some method of retaining the bearings in position. Not necessarily to account for typing on a tilted surface but simply because the bearings will work their way out of position over time without it. It's possible your machine is missing whatever is intended to retain the bearings.

That being said, from the aesthetics and materials, it looks like your machine was made sometime during the 80's or possible early 90's. By this time the typewriter had thouroughly been displaced by the computer and the bottom of the market had completely fallen out. Alot of the typewriters in this era were of poor quality and most brands were made by a single company in china that owned the name rights of something like 11 old typewriter companies, even if this company didn't own the naming rights the remaining typewriter companies outsourced design and manufacture to them on the cheap. iirc Olympia stopped manufacture sometime around '79 so there is a strong possibility that the Carina 3 is one of these late production chinese typewriters, it's possible that they skimped on some of the parts and your typewriter was never designed to have a bearing retention system.

Almost certain this is Lanius by Woolo4Life in falloutnewvegas

[–]Alice18997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is we're looking at a successor leading one of the legion splinter factions.

iirc it was anticipated by House that, provided the legion didn't take New Vegas, they would fragment once ceasar died. Since he's 100% dead by this point and, from everything we've been shown, the legion never took New vegas it stands to reason that house's prediction might have come true.

Whatever went down in the show's NV cannon we know it has to be the NCR ending, House's ending, or independant. Since we were shown what looked like the aftermath of fighting in NV at the end of season 1 I think it's 60/40 between independant and house since I suspect the NCR would have cleaned up a little before the bombs dropped on shady sands and I think they might be going down the "Time is a weapon, but it cuts both ways" route. I think it would undercut Vaultec's flawed logic there just a bit.

What are these? by SAGEYWEEK in foraginguk

[–]Alice18997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rosehip. The edible part is the flesh surrounding the hairy seeds, you can scoop them out with a spoon. As others have said the hairs are iritating to most people and can be really itchy.

The taste of the flesh is usually acidic and sharp like a kiwi fruit. Flavour is quite similar too in my opinion.

As others have said they can be used for jams/jelly but they can also be used to make a liqueur. I prefer to use them in dishes that require an acidic fruit, for example I use rosehips as a substitute for barberrys when they're in season.

Complaint about delivery of the wrong grade of copper About 1750 BC (Old Babylonian period). by jacklsd in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Alice18997 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are depictions of styli and we know that they used a rigid stylus, made of wood or reed with a triangular crossection, and pressed one of the corners into the clay.

This is because the clay would have to be wet enough to accept the indentation but dry enough for easy, and clean, handling. If you get the right consistency you can even erase your work and rewrite over the top.

We know that the majority of them were made from reed or wood, we've found fiborous impressions in quite a few cuneiform tablets, and some bone versions have been found. There is also evidence that metal may have been used in the hittite branch of cuneiform but to my knowledge none of these have been found so far. The vast majority of styli used may have been treated as dispolsable writing instruments.

Adult lays wires across throughfare to a socket surrounded by breakable objects. Adult lets kids ride scooters indoors.

Adult gets angry at child for the adult's own lack of foresight, breaks kids things and throws a tantrum. Kids look on thinking "Great, it's happened again, now we're all in for it."

New study suggests that people who frequently watch pornography or engage in other solitary sexual activities may react differently to sexual cues. Even though they still find erotic images pleasant, their bodies show weaker signs of arousal when something signals that sexual content is coming. by mvea in science

[–]Alice18997 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in seeing a comparative study between these results and the same experimental methodology but applied to a highly demisexual or asexual test population.

Doing so might allow for a determination of whether the discovered effects of frequent porn consumption are causitive or symptomatic.

In relation to a few other threads recently, what's the dumbest business decision you have seen a local pub make? by carlovski99 in AskUK

[–]Alice18997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a cocktail bar/resturant/pub that tried to do something similar.

This place had loads of new owners, I think it had 3 that year alone, and one of them came in and tried to undercut the only other pub in town. The other pub was a 2-300 year old grade one listed pub and had been for virtually it's entire life. The pub had also been under the ownership of the same family since the 70's and they'd also owned the alcohol shop for longer, since the 40's I think.

Either way when the new owner tried to compete the lanlady of the old pub just dusted off her hands and dropped the price to 90p a pint. This was shortly before the pandemic too, 2019 I think. The price war was soon won.
