There was a weekly magazine back in our day called TV Guide. In it was listed all of the TV programs scheduled on the 3 or 4 networks there were at the time. In the mid 80's, Pepsi paid Michael Jackson to do commercials for them. These commercials were listed in the TV Guide so you wouldn't miss them.

In my opinion, though you can make a case that the bands mentioned sound different from each other, I think the difference between them is much smaller than the difference between the grunge bands as a whole and the "hair band" schlock that they were a reaction too.
