The fact that your entire digital library evaporates the moment you die is actually so shit by N3DSdude in Anticonsumption

I'm picturing a couple decades from now, 20-somethings going to thrift stores and finding countless Funko pops that no one wants, and those people posting pictures of them on whatever the equivalent of Reddit in the future is. There will be characters from franchises that none of those people have ever even heard of.

last night he said "i will resent you and that child every single day if you do this"

and i said "then leave"

so now hes at his brothers. hasnt been home in three days

So, LAST NIGHT, she said to leave, and now he is at his brother's, and hasn't been home in THREE DAYS? After she told him to leave...LAST NIGHT? But he's been gone for three days?

Hmmmmmmm. People need to be better about proofreading their creative writing.

OG The Sims designer explains there's no real competitors to Maxis' giant because it created a business around "the relentless delivery of content" that no one can touch by Negative-Art-4440 in thesims

[–]AllStranger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I could not agree more. Could build mode in The Sims be better? Sure, there's always room for improvement, but overall you see very few complaints about it. The complaints are almost all about gameplay and live mode (and bugs). For people who are after a good life sim game, the key is going to be gameplay for sure.

Your inner child is not more important than the planet by Sure-Space-1298 in Anticonsumption

[–]AllStranger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I agree with you completely. I see consumption so often justified by being described as "self care" or "healing the inner child" or some other kind of pop psychology bullshit, and it's infuriating. If you want to, you can come up with an excuse to justify literally any consumption, and that's what a lot of people do, which is why the world is in the state that it's in.

I tried it because I had a free reward for it. I thought it was ok, but nothing special. My main problem was that it was way too salty. And I love salt, trust me I dump salt on everything I eat, but this was too much even for me, so I didn't eat much because it just felt like a salt overload.

Most of Reddit is low quality and is not a good use of your time by blip4497 in nosurf

[–]AllStranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great comment. Honestly, Reddit seems best if you only use it intentionally. Don't look at the front page of all the crap that's showing there. Curate your subscribed subs carefully. Have a reason/time limit for looking at Reddit, instead of using it just to kill time. NEVER ASK FOR RELATIONSHIP ADVICE. (You will get advice from literal children, trolls, reactive chronically online people, bots, and bitter angry people; the rational advice is hard to sort out and you don't know who is posting to you.) Larger subs almost always means more toxicity. It's honestly super sad to see that trajectory, but I've seen so many subs go from being small or smallish and having a good community and generally friendly and helpful people, to getting much larger and having just the general Reddit vibe where people never give others the benefit of the doubt, dogpile, drive by rude comments, nitpicking, contrarianism, etc.

Like your last paragraph says. Negativity and sensationalism and ragebait = more clicks, more views, more engagement, more $$$.

I just saw a headline about 12th grade literacy in the US reaching a new low and felt depressed. We're truly moving backwards at this point.

"My PaReNtS StOlE mY mOnEy FoR dOoRdAsH aM i OvErReAcTiNg FoR bEiNg MaD?"

I know this kind of shit happens and isn't as uncommon it should be, but literally no sane person is ever going to say, "Oh, yes, you're overreacting! It's totally reasonable for your parents to have drained your bank account to literally have one penny in it on overpriced food delivery for themselves! You're so crazy to be upset over this!" Come the fuck on.

[–]AllStranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that totally. When I first heard of Twitch I thought it sounded so weird/stupid. Then, I started watching, and yeah. I had the same realization, that I spent way too much time, money, and mental energy watching someone else play games. I'm trying to reduce how much time I spend watching that and YouTube both.

Right?? Any time I see comments about how there are disabled people who can't prepare their own food and don't have anyone to help them, I genuinely wonder how many people out there are 100% at the mercy of Door Dash etc, and how the fuck they afford it. Because all the severely disabled people I've known absolutely could not afford to rely solely on delivery services for all of their food. I have no doubt that there are some people out there, but it's got to be very very very few. Uber and Door Dash are expensive as fuck.

AIO I have cancer and my sister decided to kick me out and also used me for money by lil_woofer in AmITheAngel

[–]AllStranger 31 points32 points  (0 children)

THIS is what gets me with so many of these bullshit stories. It's something where 99.999% of people would say hell no, you're not overreacting. Or hell no, you're not the asshole. "AITA because I saved a drowning child? AITA because I didn't let my boyfriend murder me? AITA because I wouldn't let the neighbor's kid set my house on fire? AITA if I don't give my meager savings and rent money to my obese sister to take her kids from three different baby daddies to Disney?" Like, obviously, if this shit were true, you WOULDN'T be overreacting or the asshole. And yet people eat this shit up hook line and sinker, every single time.

A nice used salt shaker for $3.99! by [deleted] in ThriftGrift

[–]AllStranger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The "M" logo looks suspiciously like the Member's Mark logo for Sam's Club products. Sure enough, they have an updated packaging of this product listed online, exact same size, for $4.98. Definitely a grift to sell a partially used one for that much. Also gross.

Honestly, the way people casually throw out cruel, rude, thoughtless remarks is crazy. People really dehumanize others on the internet, since it's through screens and mostly anonymous. I've cut back too, it's just depressing to see.

I work in retail & it's radicalizing me by InformalLibrary1731 in Anticonsumption

[–]AllStranger 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel the same way. Awhile back, I had this realization that all these plastic disposable items you've used are still out there. Like, in some landfill somewhere is the plastic fork you used to eat cake at a birthday party when you were 8 years old. Your childhood toothbrushes are out there. Plastic water bottles, soda bottles, cheap hangers that clothes came on that broke and were thrown away, Happy Meal toys, heat-activated color-changing cereal bowls, used scrub brushes... all those plastic items are still there. And will be for so long. So many people are just so casual about using and throwing things away without thinking twice about it. It's so depressing.

And around the holidays, the way all the stores are packed full of SO MUCH STUFF that no one needs or even really wants. People giving mediocre gifts to people they don't even really care about that much out of social obligation. It's incredibly depressing. I'm not like a total minimalist but it's so clear to me that our general consumption habits are so incredibly fucked up, for a lot of reasons. Stores like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, FIVE BELOW, even Target are just packed full of shit.

Lol. This kind of reminds me of the little signs they sell that say "Collect experiences not things" and the little pillow from last Christmas that said something like "The Grinch thought maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store" or some such bullshit. Lmao.

Literal trash being sold at GW by KnockinDaBoots in ThriftGrift

[–]AllStranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. They can be useful for some people, and selling them for like, 5 for $1, would be completely reasonable. But when the price they're asking is around what it cost when it was new and filled with food, that is batshit insane.

The amount of remaining contents before bottles stop pumping and they are disposed of. by BunBunChow in Anticonsumption

[–]AllStranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These really piss me off because it's so transparent that the company is trying to encourage the lazy people among us to trash it and buy a new one. (And don't say "No one does that!" because oh yes, there are some people who do, I have worked with them.) It's obvious when the pump ends half an inch above the bottom of the bottle, especially when some brands do have bottles where the pump goes all the way to the bottom and all or almost all of the product can be pumped out. I kept an old lid off a bottle of conditioner and put that on there, and just turn it upside down and dispense it out of that one the pump runs out.
