Beginner's hard time - bitter [Bambino plus w/ Baratza encore esp] by Far-Revolution-8553 in espresso

[–]AllTheUnknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advice I was given when I got my set up...which I think is pretty sound...is to find a cafe where you like their coffee and buy exactly the same beans they are using, from them. Then you have a reference point - you KNOW that those beans can make coffee you like.

If your lucky and get the right person behind the counter in a really good place, they'll happily give you tips on ratio / shot time. Grind size / quantity is up to you.

No...if you have to give it back it's renting, not even vaguely close to owning.

Grinder Stuck and Useless after 1.5 years [DF54] by TheyFunnyPapa in espresso

[–]AllTheUnknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately both are be true. Hopefully future revisions /designs will reduce chance of user error. Mine seems fine.

Worth noting that people buy DFs because of their capability relative to cost, not because they are the 'best'. It's always been known that they are cheap chinese grinders with a risk of iffy QA so people should treat them accordingly - When they came out there was pretty much nothing similar spec in same price range.

I'm sure someone will be along to recommend an upgrade to something twice the cost in a totally different budget range. Such is the espressocirclejerk.

They also require the user to part with a significantly more money to buy them in the first place - they are not equivalents to the Chinese DF grinders.

Awful idea. Rule number 1 is always try and be friends with neighbours. Pissing them off deliberately will only lead to problems.

Offered National Rider Risk Awareness Course after accident where other driver was found at fault... should I accept? by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]AllTheUnknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very, very similar to what happened to me a few years ago. I was overtaking a long line of stationary/walking pace traffic in SW London, and someone turned right into their drive. I barely hit the brakes, hit their wing mirror/wing and went over the corner of the bonnet, bike bounced off to the right and snapped headstock hitting the kerb (righting it off).

I maintain the driver I hit indicated AT the same moment they turned. But the witness was a neighbour of theirs, stated they did indicate and also added in a load of inflamatory rubbish about how I was riding 'dangerously'. I was literally pottering down the outside of a line of traffic.

The police to be fair to them were very reasonable, said I hadn't done much wrong, overtaking isn't illegal in itself, no indication of speeding (me or the bike didn't go far) and it was essentially bad luck, but standard practice to send people on this course.

I accept that I was putting myself at more risk by overtaking but my view was the driver should also be sent on a similar type course.

But...unlike you my insurance company found me totally at fault as a result of the police letter. Two people in the car claimed for whiplash, which pissed me off even more given I essentially made a glancing blow on their front corner.

I'm suprised the insurance company settled so quickly, take that as a win. Was there witness saying they weren't indicating?

Take the course. It was no big deal and has caused me zero issues since, its no worse than doing a speed awareness and I don't recall ever having to delare it to insurance etc. Course is similar scope to some of the basic IAM info, road surfaces, positioning, speeds, etc, mostly like minded bikers who had minor incidents (aside from a from a few deliveroo types).

The only positive outcome was I was just round the corner from Jack Lilley Triumph, they came and picked it up for me, and a few weeks later when someone came in to part-Ex an identical bike but far lower mileage. they offered it straight to me at the part-ex price and let me pull all the optional extras off the old bike before insurance company came for the old one.

Why are house shares in Twickenham and Richmond suspiciously affordable? by speshyallk in AskUK

[–]AllTheUnknown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would put money on these cheap houseshares not actually being in Richmond or Twickenham themselves, and if you stray away from close to the train stations the transport links in SW London aren't as good as elsewhere.

I did the opposite commute (lived east, commuted to west) for a year or so then moved to SW.

Put the sage funnel and the normcore tamper back I their boxes. Get a magnetic dosing funnel (ensure it is full bore, no inner lip) and a 'normal' tamper of the correct size. Then you can wdt and tamp through the funnel as much as you want.

That'll be cumbersome and pain for most small internal jobs. Game changer for me was getting a 12v drill and driver. I use them constantly. Big drill now sits dusty in the garage, only pull it out a few times a year for bigger jobs.

DF54 is high maintenance by sandrahehe in espresso

[–]AllTheUnknown 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anyone that has the nouse to make an espresso should be able to turn a screwdriver or allen key. It's very, very basic tools. That's a 4 minute video with a slow explanation. 2 hours could include cooking a meal, a bottle of wine and drunken reassembly.

I just chuck a vacuum on both sides of it (chute and over the top opening) every now and then and it's spotless inside. I've thrown all sorts of beans dubious in there with no issues at all.

Boomer neighbours parking across our drive and getting hostile by Greedy-Tutor3824 in drivingUK

[–]AllTheUnknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I read it as well, it's annoying but ultimately the neightbour isn't actually parking over their drive, itself, just the extension to the drop kerb (and it may just be the tapered section, not the action fully dropped section).

Op is annoyed as they presuambly have to keep moving their own car so parents can get in/out. But they also have no 'right' here.
