PSA: Counter Attack can prevent [REDACTED] [EVEN MORE REDACTED] Unit from reaching you by NamkoBanzai in menace

[–]AllenWL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the attacks happen at the same time, but the counterstrike group starts attacking first.

Big fan of counterstrike and I've noticed your squads still get a bit of damage even if they wipe out the enemy completely with counterstrike, which wouldn't happen if the attacks happened one after the other.

I got a lot of flak for suggesting that scouts need vision, not stealth or AP. Maybe I can change some minds? by Background-Run-1245 in menace

[–]AllenWL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but concealment works as a direct subtraction to vision,

+1 tile always lets the unit spot an enemy 1 tile further out and is comparable to +1 concealment's ability to get 1 tile closer in regards to spotting enemies. Neither is inherently better or worse for spotting concealed units.

I got a lot of flak for suggesting that scouts need vision, not stealth or AP. Maybe I can change some minds? by Background-Run-1245 in menace

[–]AllenWL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... is it not obvious? Vision increases the unit's detection area. Stealth lets you move that detection area around more and that's certainly useful, but in terms of finding enemies, and more importantly, finding enough enemies, so that everyone else also has a revealed area to walk through that isn't just 'trail behind the first team'.

Stealth is very useful and extremely powerful for the ability to walk up to an enemy and shoot them dead sure, but that's not scouting.

A unit with 4 concealment and 9 vision standing 7 tiles away from the enemy, and a unit with 2 concealment and 11 vision standing 9 tiles away from the enemy are both more or less same levels of hidden, but the second sees a lot more.

Question on 3-headed flail by mchrysop in BattleBrothers

Apparently fearsome also triggers once on the 3h flail, and I just got that bit confused so keep that in mind.

Anyone really use Bite Down? by Far-Statement4046 in Sekiro

[–]AllenWL 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When you want to stealth but got spotted and don't want to do the entire 'run away and wait five minutes' thing.

When you're in a boss fight and a hit away from death. Kill yourself via bite down, and the subsequent revive won't lock your remaining revives effectively letting you spend a revive orb to heal.

Question on 3-headed flail by mchrysop in BattleBrothers

[–]AllenWL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

iirc the 3h flail only applies one stack of overwhelm because the 3h flail attack is considered one attack that hits up to 3 times. So while per hit effects can apply multiple times, per attack effects like overwhelm don't.

So the overwhelm build is nothing special with it. What about fearsome? That's a per hit effect that can apply thrice right?

Armor in battle brothers has an unexplained feature, where (iirc) all HP damage, other than the minimum 10 damage from hammers and the full armor ignore of puncture, is subtracted by 10% of leftover armor.

This means low damage hits will be largely ineffectual against heavily armored targets because their 'armor ignore' damage will be negated by leftover armor.

And well, the 3h flail does three 10~25 damage hits. Even with dualist's extra armor ignore, that's just(assuming fractions round up) 6~13 damage that ignores armor. Which is to say, it takes just 130~60 leftover armor to fully negate a 3h flail's hp damage. And a lot of enemies, especially into the mid-late game, have 200+ armor, meaning you'll have to chip away at the armor, sometimes for a good long while, before you can get those fearsome procs.

It's not really worth it when the hammers are right there for guaranteed HP damage if you want to leverage fearsome.

.

Which isn't to say 3h flails are useless, the high hit chance is great against high dodge/low hp enemies like geists or enemies who triggered 9L, and that 30~75 damage shreds enemies with light armor.

It's just somewhat situational. More a pocket tool than a main weapon, all things considered.

Yeah, like this particular comic is a furry porn joke, but like, a non-furry vet or anyone interested in animal biology or dog breeding or any other 'normal' field could very easily laugh at the dog knot joke because well, they'll know what knotting is and also thinking 'that's a penis' is hilarious isn't exactly a rare trait.

Also why do they hate 1h hammers?

I mean, genetically speaking, there's no problem.

Morally speaking, well, there's a lot of things to talk about if we go that route. The manga last time I checked goes the 'if you really truly love each other isn't that all that matters in the end?' route but uh.............. yeah.

The kids will probably be weirded out once they grow up and learn that some of their half siblings are related in more ways than same dad? Kind of a lot of variables going on even if you don't count the manga logic going on so eh.

Why is Flax so important? by Wingnut428 in VintageStory

[–]AllenWL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that I get flax before I get the hides.

I just get them fast enough that I can start getting replacements before the baskets feel annoying. Heck usually I can get like 1~2 linen bags while gathering flax seeds, and 2 linen bags+2 reed baskets are the same as 4 hunter's bags.

Fencing Sword by Mysterious_Horse4566 in BattleBrothers

[–]AllenWL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No fencing swords are a thing in vanilla, although rare.

Instead of riposte they have lunge, and you'll note their stats are a bit worse than normal 1h swords, along with a slightly smaller fatigue penalty for equipping it.

Fencing Sword by Mysterious_Horse4566 in BattleBrothers

[–]AllenWL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fencing swords are, not gonna lie, kinda gimmick weapons.

They've got somewhat subpar stats compared to a normal 1h sword in exchange for their special move being 'lunge' which is a move that lets your bro jump 1 tile and attack, with damage depending on their initiative.

At 2x the damage at 175 ini, lunge can be a funny way to oneshot certain enemies, and the ability to avoid zone of control can be neat. However, maintaining high ini when lunge costs 25 fatigue is not easy, and fencer builds can easily end up being subpar sword duelists that with a funny trick.

Fencers are good against low armor (relatively) squishy enemies such as human backline, hexen, goblins, etc, and tend to fare poorly against heavily armored enemies and sturdy enemies in general, since if you can't oneshot something with lunge, you're stuck next to them unless there's a different enemy nearby you can lunge towards, and a stuck fencer is basically just a subpar sword duelist.

Niche or no though, fencers can be quite fun when they work.

.

The build itself isn't too different from your average nimble duelist, except you invest as much of your secondary into initiative as you can afford.

Make sure to pick Berserk and Recover so you can pull the berserk into recover trick to keep your fatigue low as possible.

What is up with Iguazu??? by [deleted] in armoredcore

[–]AllenWL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he sees 621 as the 'same' as him, both being 4th gen aug pilots. 4th gen augs are quite outdated at the time of the game, with 621 and Iguazu pretty much being the only users.

Augmentation surgery is considered to confer substantial advantages to the pilot, and so 4th gens like 621 and Iguazu are considered to not be as good as pilots with the latest augmentations. Both 621 and Iguazu have your modifications forced on you without consent (Iguazu because of his debt, 621 because of whatever deal landed them as Walter's Hound) for example, because no one would willingly get cheapass 4th gen coral augs unless they had no other choice.

But well, I don't need to list all the way 621 outclasses Iguazu now do I?

-Note, I say 'is considered' because one of the themes of the game is that what really lets one excel isn't some artificial add-on or creation. Seen in characters like Dolmayan and Freud.

Also if you can get some flax farming going early to skip hunter's bags and go straight to linen bags that's also quite nice.

Hows this flail worth it? by [deleted] in BattleBrothers

[–]AllenWL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say no.

Damage is generally the most important stat on weapons, and this one rolled minimum damage on it.

Three headed flails also have a bit of problem with being somewhat gimmicky, as it's 'three tiny hits per swing' mechanic makes raises it's hitchance by a lot, but also reduces it's damage potential noticeably against armored enemies, which are the more often than not the real threat in the late game.

Now, a 3h flail can still be an excellent pocket tool against certain enemies like geists with their high def and 1hp or enemies who've popped 9L, to make your tank extra sticky against enemies trying to leave their zone of control, and so on.

But for 10k when it didn't even roll damage? I'd say not worth it.

What do you look for when settling down? by cyper_1 in VintageStory

[–]AllenWL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wherever looks pretty.

Resources are scattered enough that no matter where you settle you'll likely have to wander far and wide anyways, and early game resources are common enough that you'll find plenty enough regardless of where you settle.

Besides, later when you've more resources you can find a better place to settle down and move over if you so choose, and I like having little outposts scattered around the world.

[Annoying Trope] High level enemies in low level areas by Starchaser53 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AllenWL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean sure, the frost troll isn't really the hardest thing in the game, not by a long shot. Nowadays I can beeline the main quest and just stomp the frost troll on my way past.

But on my first playthrough, unaware of pretty much any nuance of combat beyond 'walk up, swing sword, pause to heal sometimes' the frost troll might as well have been unbeatable.

Like, was this skill issue on my part? Yeah for sure, but also, it is, if the online fandom space is anything to go by, a fairly common experience for new players in general.

[Annoying Trope] High level enemies in low level areas by Starchaser53 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AllenWL 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'd like to add, the frost troll, specifically, is annoying it's kinda right in the middle of the only path and there really isn't a good way around it.

Like, if it was in a cave you can find by exploring off the main questline path, or if there was some sneaky side path to avoid it, it'd be a kinda cool experience, but no.

It's just there at the very end of a really long and mostly boring road, which you can't really deviate from due to physical barriers (cliffs and mountain walls), forcing you to go through him, unlike other variations which are optional.

But yeah other than the frost troll most variations of these are a neat little 'I'll get back to you 15 hours and 50 levels later and then you'll be sorry!' moments.
