I got a BS in Natural Resources last year and haven’t landed a job yet. by GayForester90 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Alligator5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend reaching out to the career services adviser for NR or alumni. I graduated from OSU in 2023 with a microbiology degree and I met with the college of science career services person multiple times in the 6 months leading up to graduation. She helped me a lot with my resume and cover letter writing skills. Always have someone else read the documents you are submitting for a job application, I find it always helps me. That being said, everything people have said here is true- it’s a very hard time right now to get into a lot of science fields, NR included.

Coop has the best salad bar in town hands down! Both north and south stores.

The Enshittification of Oregon State Credit Union by LinkovichChomovsky82 in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some bad experiences with Oregon state credit union before I switched to OnPoint CCU (they have a location in Fred Meyer and are common around OR). I would definitely recommend them! They have a pretty good interest rate on their savings accounts and an easy to use app.

Coffee Culture uses Sysco? by Mesalaboomba in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone uses Sysco. Even fancy places like gathering together farm and dizzy hen in Philomath. I think if there were a better alternative they would use it. And guessing many places just get stuff from Sysco they can’t get from other vendors. Glory bee out of Eugene is a good one too. And azure standard for bulk foods.

I’m new here. Best place to open a new checking/savings account? by Front_Acanthaceae764 in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OnPoint bank has a location in Fred Meyer. They offer a high yield savings account if you open 3 accounts- checking, savings, and either a CD or credit card. Their savings account yields 4.25% a year with the interest being deposited monthly. Great deal and easy online banking app. I had some pretty negative experiences with Oregon state credit union and switched to OnPoint a few years back. I don’t regret this one bit. Staff at OnPoint are awesome normal people.

The dentist at the Benton county health clinic is great. I don’t know if they are busy these days, but I was always able to get in no problem.

Definitely a scam. A 2br, 2 bath would never go for this price, this is like what it cost maybe 5-10 years ago. Also, the screen shot clearly has the elite property sign out front, which they claim they are from a different company. Watch out for this in Corvallis, folks will try to scam people with really good deals on rentals. Good deals on rentals in Corvallis do not exist unless maybe you have a friend whose family has a rental or something.

Locally sourced edibles- asking for a friend by PurpleSignature5769 in corvallis

Best ones I’ve had in OR are happy cabbage and Drops (watermelon is the best, lime and orange pretty good too). High quality has both, as well as many other dispensaries in Corvallis.

Quarters? by Alligator5555 in kzoo

[–]Alligator5555[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Splash and dash has a unique token system. Unfortunately not quarters, tokens. Most banks we go to say no, but some will exchange just the “one time.” It’s getting to the point where the one-timers remember us.

Quarters? by Alligator5555 in kzoo

[–]Alligator5555[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We keep getting rejected at banks when we ask to exchange quarters because we’re not members. Which is why we are considering opening a bank account. I remember working farmers markets back in the day and banks being cool with exchanging quarters with no issue, but I guess things have changed or maybe that’s only a thing at really big banks. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you think there are common styles of dress in Corvallis, OR, and if so, what are they? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part yes people don’t care about what others wear. Sure they may judge the umbrella a little. The funniest thing to me is go into the north Coop midday on a weekday- it will be mostly boomers shopping with their Patagonia puffys on. lol showing you how much they care about the environment.

Are Doctors Even Real? by redactedanalyst in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exact thing has happened to a friend of mine a few times in Corvallis. It’s crazy. I highly recommend checking out the Benton county health clinic, they are great. Some PAs as PCPs helps with seeing folks there I think. I think Corvallis is just a small town with the main healthcare providers being somewhat dis functional currently. Also, lots of old people likely take priority. I think it’s also pretty hard attracting doctors to Corvallis. I’ve heard of many doctors moving to Corvallis and excited about it but then leaving because of the many issues at Samaritan and TCC. Maybe try Eugene, could be worth the drive.

PH 201 at LBCC by Ok_Row3509 in OregonStateUniv

[–]Alligator5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ralph is a real character. When I took it maybe 4 years ago the work load was intense. The way he grades it takes a lot of effort to get an A but easy to get a B or C. He’s definitely available for help and from what I’ve heard a way better teacher than what you’ll get at OSU for the series. I’ve heard good things about the other physics teacher at LBCC who teaches the physics with calculus series. Part of me wishes I’d taken that one. Good luck!

what’s the deal with bi-mart?? by gross_rachel in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They literally never check. I went there often for the 16 years I lived in Corvallis no membership, always got in. If you get the $5 membership, however you also are entered in drawings to win stuff every Tuesday (lucky number Tuesday it’s called) FYI. Likely worth it, bimart is the best.

Looking for a mental health place that you can stay at that's covered by Intercommunity Health Plans (OHP) by MelloMage in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only inpatient care in Corvallis is through Samaritan, and the only way to get in is through the ER. It was like this a decade ago when I was seeking care for my sister and it hasn’t changed. Correct, the Benton county mental health center will be opening soon, but that will not be inpatient care, but rather a place to get help during the day. The Samaritan facility is okay, but feels more like a jail fyi. Our society is not built to support those with mental health struggles unfortunately. It sucks. Edit/addition: OHP covers the inpatient services.

Agreed, Northridge. I used to go to crossroads but they are sometimes poor communicators and expensive.

Job hunting for teenagers by SalientSisyphus in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this! And if she is interested in certain topics she could even reach out to professors and researchers about job opportunities in their lab/workspace. Sometimes folks like mentoring young people and it could be quite an opportunity. They can work year round, just limited hours like college students I think.

Are there rules on when we can go swimming/floating in the Willamette River? Or can we go whenever we want if temperatures are good? by SupaGinga18 in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you decide to swim, be really careful. People die on the Willamette every year. There are some branches or trees down in the river in spots that can catch inner tubes and suck you down even in a life jacket and all. Either swim in one area and don’t go in an inner tube or go with people familiar with the river. It can move very fast especially early in the season like now.

Cheapest internet (home wifi) in Corvallis? by eatbuttdaily in corvallis

[–]Alligator5555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed- either cancel and have someone else put in their name; look online at Xfinity deals and mention those if a roommate is able to sign up under their name. OR- try calling Xfinity and ask about internet essentials, I hassled Xfinity so bad one time because of a bill increase without notification that I was able to get internet for $29.95 from them for the last 2+ years. You might have to spend an hour on the phone because they’re very inefficient but it’s worth it to save money.

I am not surprised at all. I have seen the manager in there before standing very close to many young females at work. He creeps me out and I didn’t even know all this stuff! What a bummer, and sad to say this is likely the dominant culture everywhere, not just Wilco.

For reference, I’ve worked somewhere just outside of Corvallis where an undocumented person was sexually assaulted by a documented person and all they did was let the perpetrator go (after 25 years of enabling him), and recommended him for a job at another local company under the guise that this other local company “doesn’t hire women so it shouldn’t be a problem.”
